It's funny that you mention dragon anatomy. Some scientists actually theorised how they would realistically breathe fire. They settled on the theory that they would have two glands in their mouths which fluids, when mixed, would ignite. Thus, the fluids are ejected, they mix mid-flight, and fire happens through a chemical reaction. Fun stuff.
@the_jo_universe
@the_jo_universe 11 ай бұрын
I researched a bit and have a theory in wich the stomach acid is ethanol and they eat potassiumhydroxide wich naturally occurs through the "leaching process from wood ashes...or the auto-ignition of died leaves" ethanol is flamable though the auto-ignition temperatur is quite high (470°C) so another fluid to ignite it is a good idea. I'm not a scientist but rather a 9th grader with cronic science enthusiasm.
@-desertpackrat
@-desertpackrat 9 ай бұрын
Wouldn't it also work if they simply eject something that naturally combusts when exposed to open air, like white phosphorus? Or sulfur particles that set fire to things they touch when expelled at force creating heat and friction? If a mantis shrimp can punch fast enough to evaporate the water around its strike, maybe dragons could expell volatile particles or something like sulfur, sodium, or lithium, so hard and fast that they ignited from the friction of air resistance heating them up and upon contact with the target and exposure to oxygen. It would be a little simpler evolution too, than developing two different chemicals that react together. Although I know evolution doesn't always work like that and sometimes goes the complicated path when it didn't need to.

1:28 Funnily enough, I actually had that exact same idea. It would be called "Fur Note." The story would be that our protagonist, after years of being bullied for his association with the furry fandom, would find a notebook, and that notebook would turn anyone who's name were written down into an anthropomorphic animal. He then uses it to get revenge. Yeah.

The dragon vomiting fire makes sense. Some flammable stomach acid mixed with a couple of teeth that spark when ground together or something... Though there is some lore that dragon fire is different than regular fire so maybe phosphorus is involved.. isn't there a lizard that spits acid or something?

About that, it's most likely an ethanol compound and calcite grinders for ignition. there are genetic defects that allows most animals and even humans to automatically turn carbohydrates into ethanol, and most components of calcite are already present as well in their bodies. the grinders would most likely function similiar to our vocal cords, with independant muscles that can be controlled sepperate of the reflux
@a_d3mon
@a_d3mon 2 жыл бұрын
Let me answer the dragon fire thing... In most lore and legends, most dragons aren't actually spitting up fire or liquids of any type. Instead, they're spewing a form of flammable gas that they then light on fire using a spark that they generate either in their throat, their mouth, or just outside of their mouth. This gives the illusion that they're spewing fire (or in that instance with fluid dynamics a "vomit" of fiery liquid). Fluid dynamics are used to determine the flow of fluid or air (which yes includes gasses). This means that if a dragon so chooses, they can forgo lighting the gas they spew and sit in wait for unwary adventurers and then light them up. Not a certified chemist but I spend a LOT of time learning random bs such as this XD

I feel that Dragons don't necessarily need to have gasoline (or any other kind of fuel) inside their stomach. They could very easily have a pouch or gland inside either their neck or their chest, which could lead to the digestive tract in order to shoot it like a ball (as you would spit something) or spray it.

The best example I've ever seen with fire "breathing" dragons is in the movie Reign of Fire. How they have two glands on either side of their inner cheeks that they shoot out two different chemicals that ignite and combust on contacts with one another, basically making a chemical flame thrower. It works really well in the film and even makes the biological construction of the dragons, how they managed to breathe fire, and even why they breathe fire, makes perfect sense. It's an older film, but I highly recommend it. Great stuff, you'll have trouble recognizing Matthew McConaughey, but he's in the film, batman too.

For the fur thing, humans can sweat. Sweating is highly effective at regulating body temperature when it is hotter than its baseline. The sweat absorbs the heat energy from the body, cooling the body down. Because the specific heat of water is super high, this makes it very useful, especially for endurance and stamina which our ancestors really needed. Now, if you had fur all over your body, that would be a very good insulator, but because of that, it would be very ineffective to sweat. It would slow evaporation down a lot, and you would start to suffer from heat stroke if you tried any intense exercise. You want a lot of surface area for the sweat to absorb heat and also have it as close to your body, being on your skin instead of on your hair, as possible to absorb the most, as well as not having it unable to evaporate such as a high relative humidity especially in higher temperatures. I believe we are one of the very few animals that use sweat to cool off, making us one of the best animals at endurance. People who sweat less or cannot sweat are at a higher risk of heat stroke because of this.

It's so true lol. Being straight was such a phase, literally just trying to fit into the "fad" sexuality that was most popular. Then being gay was a phase because I knew straight wasn't working out but I thought everyone has to be in a relationship so I jumped on the "fad" of not being single. It's all fads to me when people make sexuality a popularity contest. Then I realized that all the fads and what's popular doesn't affect my life, I'm Ace and I don't need to pretend anymore.

I've seen the idea of dragon biology thrown around before, and a common way the fire breathing is done is that it's venom glands producing flammable material, and it's lit on the way out. Maybe dragons as seen there spit out a ton of venom that combusts when exposed to air.
@themaxterz0169
@themaxterz0169 Жыл бұрын
Why would it be venomous, if its already flammable?
@Daesma999
@Daesma999 Жыл бұрын
@@themaxterz0169 I guess you can put it this way: a *modification* of venom glands. They are a thing in reptile realm, so dragons having them makes sense.. fish scales are modificated bones, sharks' are from same material as teeth.. and feathers are probably a modification of reptile scales..? Because birds are basically reptiles, after all. Modifications are natural thing as well.
@RhinoRapscallion
@RhinoRapscallion Жыл бұрын
It could be something similar to a bombardier beetle, like a two part self-igniting napalm in place of the normal venom glands, that when expelled from the mouth mix in the air and burst into flames. But the two parts are not flammable when not mixed, so if the fire travels back (this is why hairspray flamethrowers are so dangerous) it doesn’t get to the glands and destroy them.

So the way I see it: a dragon's breath is just an expulsion of heat from their body. They can't sweat, so they just breathe out that excess heat. Now as for how they would breathe fire, they have 2 secondary glands within their mouths near the saliva glands. They are born knowing how to do something called gleeking(spraying the saliva from the glands in your mouth. Maybe you've yawned and a little bit of liquid sprayed from under your tongue), except this liquid is like kerosene, which they would produce naturally. The heat from their breath would cause this flammable liquid to conflagrate, causing said dragon to appear like it's breathing fire. There's also the fact that human and animal fat is flammable, so the kerosene-like substance would actually be the liquidized form of that fat from whatever it ate. (Idk if the dragon would digest that fat or store it in those glands somehow, but I think this is how it would work.)

I always thought more of a really exothermic reaction between something that turns aerosol from the stomach acid and the oxigen on the air. I mean, while inside, the fumes don't mix with enough oxigen to start the reaction (too low oxidizer mixture), but as soon as it is thrown, it gets oxigen rich and burns instantly. Look up "hipergolic reaction" for more on the subject.

having gas instead of stomach acids would be incredeably inconvinient, as its relatively neutral with a ph of 6-8 (water has a ph of 7) while stomach acids are in the low 1.5 - 3.5... so lats assume that you have stomach acids that have a ph of 5, you would need a really long digestive system to digest anything, but eating meat would not be good as it would likely rot inside your lower intestines, so you would be a herbavore, but thats not good either, as your diet would be fibers that are hard to dissolve, you would be constepated 24/7... so stick with normal stomach acids... but if dragons would be like snakes with their venom pouches, so on command a little hole in the back of your neck would shoot out flamable fluid that with a grind of your teeth would produce a spark and then FIRE!
