The Creality Cr-Scan Ferret is a budget 3d scanner that aims to bring 3d scanning to the masses. How good is it and is it time to finally buy a 3d scanner to help with your 3d printing? Let's find out.

I use kiri engine and it absolutely kills the scans!! Its amazing! And its very user friendly!(but its $10 a month)......i feel like the phone photogrammetry is better than the standalone scanner(in my opnion) but nothing has looked appealing when it comes to the stand alone scanners! Hit me up if yall have any questions! Or ideas youd like to pass my way to brainstorm!

This was a great review from the perspective of the potential user of a 3D scanner. It answered all of my questions and informed me of issues I didn't foresee. I need a 3D scan of a few parts that are probably an ideal size for scanning. They're black plastic but some temporary spray on scanning finish should suffice. I need the scans so I can develop 3D printed parts that mate with complex injection molded products from another company so I can't get their CAD files. I need to be able to scan their parts and subtract them from the parts that I design so my parts mount onto their parts and the price of the Creality Ferret would be less expensive than paying for a commercial 3D scanning service, and would allow me to control the process so I could scan a new part as needed without shipping parts to a 3D scanner service.

Great review! For smaller scale items I've heard good things about Matter & Forms 3D scanners and they seem well priced so maybe they'd pair up nicely with this to cover more bases. Also, as an alternative to stickers and powder, maybe paint markers like Posca pens could be an option for certain items, highlighting contours etc, not ideal but if it helps 🤷‍♂️

I would recommend you add Blender 3D to your toolbox - for retopology. In two weeks or so you could run it like a pro. You don't have to stick to all-quads in retopology as long as you subdivide afterwards, and apply a shrinkwrap modifier to conform to the scanned shape.

Thanks for your video content and the information on this topic matter. I'm thinking of getting into 3d printing, but it's not a priority. So I think I can wait for things to become simpler and more accurate. I don't want to spend too much time learning CAD. As for this scanner, I think I will wait until the dream version at the beginning of your video is available. LOL

Very interesting! I got a couple of tips for you. Other then the baby powder (which you likely already tried and figured out that the problem isn't flat surfaces, but reflections), there's a couple of CADs designed to make stl solid. The useful ones (like SolidWorks) unfortunately aren't free. However, making them solid also makes it possible to split models in CADs and add taps for easy perfect assembly (almost perfect, nothing fine sandpaper can't fix in a couple of mins) That's the price point I've been waiting for and performance seems decent for my goals (bike/car mods/planing), going to go order now.

I would like to see reviews of Jewelry 3D scanners, and scanners that can operate at that resolution. These scanners should be the most useful for scanning objects to print on standard size FDM and Resin Printers. Aside from Jewelry, they should be useful for scanning small replacement parts (Eg test nubs, gears, clips, keyboard feet etc), and miniatures (Plastic, metal, resin, green stuff, and clay models/sculptures). I can already sculpt much better by hand than I can in 3D so being able to sculpt a small figure, scan it and then print copies would be very useful for me.

Did you also consider using clear plexiglass dowel rods to support your products to scan reducing the need to remove background materials? It's similar to photographing objects to be able to insert them into other images like superimpose a car into another type of scene that would be impossible to do in real life...

I have had endless problems with their software on Windows and Mac, so I’ve never really been able to use the CR Lizard. The Kickstarter for that one was kind of a mini fiasco as well. I just don’t think Creality is quite ready for prime time with these devices, yet. Mine has collected dust for the past year and a half, though I dust it off every time there is a new software update… good luck with yours!

Good review! I suspect that we may see a few Ferret clones appearing ( al la Ender 3 ). One thing that does bother me is the copyright issue. There are already loads of rip-off copies of resin bust models available, but this will bring copying to a new level. The cat's out of the bag already, and it may discourage makers from producing new stuff, if it's promptly cloned!

There isn't really a maximum size as such. The problem with scanning something like a car is the large flat surfaces where it would lose it's reference and fail. The final restriction would probably be the file size rather than the physical object size.
