I always assumed the plastic flavour of Hostess products was down to additives that weren't legal to sell in the EU (kind of how ingredients to US Mountain Dew aren't legal here). So I'm surprised that the Poundland alternative is even more chemically.

Modern Hostess products don't at all taste like the Hostess products they had back when "Hostess" was an actual company before they went out of business. The products were great, and then, when they went out of business, what I think happened was all these other companies purchased the ability to slap the Hostess name on their "Look alike" cakes and products. The "Hostess Apple Pies" for instance aren't at ALL the "Hostess Apple Pies" that they had previously. They're cheap, mushy, knock offs with the "Hostess" name slapped on them. The Twinkies are smaller than the originals and the cake is different and the filling is much.. lighter and cheaper tasting. The same thing goes for the chocolate cupcakes. It's like the people who have the new "Hostess" products have cut corners and cheapened up these recipes to the point where they're to the level of the crap knock-offs that we avoided back in the 80's, but now, since we have nothing to compare it to, and they have the name, people are saying, "It's Hostess!!! They're the best of the bunch!" When actually they're NOTHING LIKE what they used to be. They're garbage now.

@BlackburnBigdragon6 жыл бұрын
I used to love the Hostess Apple Pies and used to get them all the time. After Hostess went under and the "New Hostess" emerged, I remember buying my first "Hostess Apple Pie" after that point, really happy that someone had "picked up the torch". I immediately noticed that something was wrong with it. It looked physically nothing like the old apple pie. It was smaller. It also didn't have near the amount of icing on it that the old ones did. The crust was mushy and soggy, where on the old ones, the crust was firm. I instantly realized that this was a bait and switch. It was NOT a "Hostess Apple Pie" in that "Hostess Apple Pie" box. Even the filling was different. It was thicker and the apples inside were chopped finer than the previous version. I quickly learned that all these Hostess products that they were making now were the Hostess knock off companies who paid to grab the name to slap on their knock offs. Oh, they claim that they're using the same ingredients that the original Hostess products use... but they're certainly not using them in the same amounts, nor are they baking them in the same way, and they're certainly not mentioning anything that they're adding, in addition to the fact that they cut the portion size of the original Hostess products down to about 1/3 of what they once were. Those Twinkies are bite size, shot glass, things compared to what they were when Hostess was originally making them.
@mrbrown21866 жыл бұрын
I think it's universal. Everything has gone to shit nowadays. I live in England it's all up the wall now. It started with coke about 35 years ago and will continue in a downward spiral. They count on everyone who tasted the original products dying or at least a big enough passage of time going by so the next generation who try that particular product don't know what the original tasted like, and think the modern excuse for (insert product name here) is how it's supposed to be.

Twinkies used to taste different, but they changed the recipe back in 2013. The Twinkie prior to that didn't have that odd chemically aftertaste that the current version does.
@Kiralitess6 жыл бұрын
That is because Hostess when bankrupt and then the company and name were bought out. July of 2013 is when said new company holders brought Twinkies and other Hostess products back. I feel like they either somehow lost\couldn't get the proper recipes for each product, or they started using cheaper ingredients and methods to make them. For one thing, the new Twinkies are just a bit smaller and they have less cream in them, and the cake isn't as soft as it use to be. Look at the one in the video, notice how the bottom of the Twinkie is thicker than they use to be and how it looks like they overcooked said bottom. I clearly remember every Twinkie I ate before they got bought out was consistently the same light golden color around the whole Twinkie, including the bottom.
@TheFreakyFanatic6 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree. The older version did have somewhat of an aftertaste but I don't think it was really chemically. I remember it being more of a sweeter aftertaste, but hey feel free to disagree. Also, memory is a fickle bitch.

@MrTBoneSF6 жыл бұрын
It's questionable whether the Twinkies made today have the same flavor as even Twinkies from ten years ago. Hostess went bankrupt in 2012 and all their products went out of production. A company bought the name from the remnants of Hostess and started up again under "Hostess Brands" but had no relation to the original company. Apparently at the time they did change the recipe by adding more preservatives to increase the shelf life (which originally was at most three weeks despite popular myth) to over a month and a half. It's also unclear if the new company even had access to the original recipe or if they simply winged it. And Twinkies have changed many times over the years. They originally had banana cream filling, but were forced to switch to vanilla during WWII due to banana shortages. After WWII, Hostess didn't switch back because people were used to the new flavor (similar to how Hershey chocolate switched formulations during WWII to be more heat resistant and kept the new recipe because "why mess with something that sells?").
@TheHutchy013 жыл бұрын
Hershey really should consider changing either the recipe or name of their "Chocolate" because calling that stuff chocolate is practically defaming Cacao.

It's a common thing with Americans to not like Twinkies. Also, Hostess of the modern day is crap. Hostess had shut down due to the employees unionizing before their name was purchased by some manufacturer who made cheap clones of Hostess' cakes. Personally, Little Debbie and their Swiss Rolls were more of my family's jam back in the late 90s/2000s. But then again, my family lived out on the edge of town surrounded by wide spaces (used for farming patches) and trees. We weren't able to do much since we only had satellite TV and dial-up at that time. Those weren't my days.

I'm in the midwest (Northern Bay area) for the record. It's that Little Debbie's cakes were more likely to be found since they don't sell that well in northern California, not that they're bad (They're better than what Hostess is now in my opinion). This is coming from a man in the North Bay that likes RC cola.

Great: I'm watching this at quarter of three in the morning. All the shops are closed. And now I'm craving Twinkies. However, thanks to all the comments on how Hostess has got to crap, my cravings have eased to the point where I can wait until I can bake my own.

Twinkies are revolting. They just taste like chemicals. American sweets in general aren't very nice.
@krashd6 жыл бұрын
If you love sugar though you'd struggle to find better sweets in the world. In the US dentists and confectioners have been fighting a bloody battle through the ages since the dawn of time, which is really impressive seeing as the country is only about 240 years old.
@benanderson896 жыл бұрын
You absolutely can find better sweets in the world. Classic British and German confectionery springs to mind, like hard boiled British sweets (pretty much pure sugar) and German Gingerbread (which is heaven sent).

Yeah and you know it, when likes of Kraft took over Cadburys and Nestlé took over Rowntrees (two Great British family companies), the quality and taste went down hill rapidly all those who knew them before the change could tell the difference. Trouble is in sweet and cake manufacturing whole milk, butter and cream are now replaced with inferior whey powder and a bunch of emulsifiers hardly any pure cocoa to be found whatsoever just shed loads of sugar E Numbers and cocoa butter or palm oils, yuck!

A lot of mass-produced chocolate in the US is absolutely horrendous. The KitKat, for example, is a million times better here in Canada than the Hershey's shit they produce there.
@scottbreon94486 жыл бұрын
The Swiss are known for making the best chocolate in the world. Americans load their sweets with fat and sugar (AND NOT TO MENTION OTHER FILLERS) because as the great George Carlin once said "America is BIG TIME, PIG TIME"

Hostes names are perverted. I work at a local shop and on the shelf perfectly lined up were their brand of sweets in line going. Suzzie q (is a) hoho (and likes eating) dingdongs. Lol

I never was very partial to Twinkies growing up but I was poor and didn't get sweets all that often so I would devour them like they were ambrosia when I got some. I still miss the cherry sweet rolls that Hostess used to make, they were my favorite.

My father used to live near a Hostess Twinkee plant when he was a kid in the 50's. He said he remembers the last time he ever ate one, which was when one of the workers told him that the filling was made from shortening and powdered sugar mixed together. I guess the absurdity is they were probably all natural back then, now probably 100% chemical filling.
