I just sold a batch of small items and it defaulted to Ground Advantage. I’m using calculated shipping and so far it seems to work well. The cost is not bad and I have not lost anything. It gives me enough to cover my supplies cost without overcharging the buyer.

Now that I'm a "Top Rated" seller, sometimes I get paid in like 2 days. Stick it out and it'll get easier once you prove yourself.

Great video Scot! Easy to understand. The closest thing I can think of to a "shortcut" for eBay users who do not use Business Policies is to bulk edit the listings and change the shipping service offered in the listings in batches. Hopefully there is (or will be) an easier way!

Your video was easy to understand BUT, I want to use calculated shipping on most things. I set up a policy for 1-16 oz then tried to set up one for 1-2 pounds but it is telling me this is the same as my 1-16 oz policy. I would like to see a video on this using calculated shipping.

With calculated shipping, you don't need separate policies for each weight range. Just make one for Ground Advantage. The cost will be calculated on the weight and dimensions for that item.

I use calculated shipping, I've been on ebay for 8 years. I made one policy Called "calculated ground advantage USPS" went down to the drop down chose ground advantage. It has been working fine, I don't have different prices for each ounce of package. Bulk listing really isn't necessary if you already have first class policy (everyone does ebay gave it to you) Go under the edit button click it the drop down will have change the policy name click that pick the policy you just made, click save. You do have to give it a little while to convert over. Any offer's you have out will not change over it will tell you that and the amount that would not convert. You have to wait at least 24 hours and go back to redo those. I had a facebook friend explain really simple in steps how to change it over when you just use calculated I don't understand why someone would want different prices on their individual items. You can be off by one ounce and you will loose money on shipping. thanks for the video, but, someone needs to put out a video that is slower and shows beginner's the whole process. Not just how to make a policy.

This video was intentionally short and only focused on creating the policy. I have many, many videos that show how to do a variety of things on eBay methodically, step-by-step. And while the policy for First Class has existed for some time, there are LOTS of people who haven't been using it. I do like the idea of creating a policy for Ground Advantage calculated. I don't use calculated myself because it tended to way overcharge for shipping. And, admittedly, I wanted control over how much it told the buyer shipping was going to cost. Perhaps it is closer to the seller's actual cost today.

I didn't even think about people not using policies glad I went through the pain to start that few months ago. I basically just do 5.99 for all first class now GA, 8.8 for padded flat rate, 12 for usps shoe box, ups 12 for stuff cheaper outside of usps. 20 for bigger items UPS. Then just mess with the list prices to get me to what item is going for.

Good tutorial. When I created shipping policies for Ground Advantage, I first looked at the max cost per USPS zone chart. That gave me a good idea of how much to charge for the 0-4 oz, etc. I have contacted EBay twice regarding a simple method of changing first class to Ground Advantage but got nowhere. I don’t think there’s an easy answer.

hi laura, I figured out a "kind of" workaround for me that let me change close to 2K listings pretty fast. I simply pulled up seller hub, changed my page length to 100 listings, and sorted by category, or shipping amount. Then I selected all of items i knew or suspected were Ground advantage, or eBay standard letter. Then select "edit", then edit selected... you fall into "bulk edit" , then drop down to delivery, shipping policy, change to, and select your created 0-4 for ground advantage, or 0-3 for ebay standard letter. I sell a lot of single postcards and this worked great for me. Hopefully that made some sense. I'm in the process of revising my entire inventory so I sure hope it works. Good luck in your adventure! I really appreciate that. If you need to adjust for the increase, you will do that within the policy. Then, that will adjust each listing that uses that policy. I have enough cushion in mine right now, but having and using a shipping policy makes it much easier.

When you put one day for handling, what do you do if you need to go somewhere for a few days and won't be at home, and something sells during that time? Especially if you're not gone very often, how do you temporarily update/suspend all your listings?

It's super easy. From the Seller Hub, find the section called SELLING TOOLS. In that section you should find one that says, TIME AWAY. You don't need a store to have that available. When you open that, you'll see a link to edit your time away. :-)

Having 1 or 2 day response time is how long BEFORE you ship. That isn't an indication of how quickly they will get it. If you've indicated that is will be Ground Advantage with shipping within 24 hours. The buyer will expect it to ship within 24 hours (1 business day) of the time it was paid. The shipping method will be added to that.

For me, it's because I do flat rate shipping. I will charge different amounts based on those weight classes. I won't have to go in and individually assign costs. And, updating the costs in the future will be as simple as changing the price in the policy. Does that make sense?

You do have to pay taxes. Exactly what that looks like for you is impossible to tell from here. It's really important to have a tax professional giving you advice.

That's correct. The only real trick to using calculated shipping is to make sure you have the correct weight and measurements of your item just like you would ship it.

I use $3.99 for 4-8 ounces, $4.99 for 8-12 ounces and $5.99 for 12-16 ounces. Keep in mind, with an average sale price above $50, I don't care if I'm a dollar or two short overall. You'd have to play with those amounts to suit you.

Drop shipping, where you fulfill orders directly from a wholesale supplier, is allowed on eBay. Remember that if you use drop shipping, you’re still responsible for the safe delivery of the item within the time frame stated in your listing and for the buyer’s overall satisfaction with their purchase. However, listing an item on eBay and then purchasing the item from another retailer or marketplace that ships directly to your customer is not allowed on eBay.

Ground Advantage can go up to 70 pounds! It does more than first class. Always check the price when you're shipping. For me, some long- distance packages that are also heavy are cheaper with Priority. But, overall, Ground Advantage has been awesome

You can either use your existing policy or make changes to this one."

It sounds like you've only changed the name of the policy. You need to change the price, dimensions or weight as well. Try that and see if it helps.

With one business day "turn-around", are you not worried about people that might change their mind and cancel? Then you've shipped the item and they do not ship it back or make you pay for them to ship it back. I've had a couple of customers do several of these scenarios to us or tried to change the addy on me. I try to make it a standard to offer a 3 day shipping. This way, I can confirm their payment has been processed and it's given enough time for the customer to address any questions or issues before I ship. How do you confirm an order is legit before you ship?

Once I've waited an hour, I don't worry about it. They can't cancel if I've already shipped. I would just let them know I accept returns...no problem. But it RARELY comes up. Truly. My entire return rate is generally under 1%. Of that 1%, exceptionally little of it is due to people trying to take advantage of me.

I made my second ever sale today 🎉 and was surprised to see that eBay takes their 15% on the total including shipping. (I was too excited on my first sale to analyze the transaction.) Is there a better way to avoid paying too much in fees?

eBay didn't originally charge a fee on the shipping. So, some sellers started charge 1 cent for their item and all of the money for shipping. eBay adjusted to stop that. In the end, it's still one of the least expensive platforms to sell on. I also sell on Poshmark and Etsy. eBay still blows them away in overall revenue.

Ground Adv. can NOT be used on a letter or flat . If the letter is OVER 3/4" thick then it's a pkg. If the flat is rigid enough where it does NOT flex an inch or more when put halfway off the end of a table and pressing down at the center then it's a pkg. Paying Ground Adv does NOT make it a package. It MUST physically be a package. Many shippers especially ebayers do this to get tracking. MANY of these trading card sellers use a small padded env. This is NOT automatically a pkg. If it's letter size and not over 1/4" thick it can't be anything but a letter, probably a non-machinable one because of address orientation. No tracking allowed on letters, even non-mach. ones unless Priority rate is paid. Also address orientation could cause the piece to be NON-MAILABLE because it MUST be 5" long and it's not with the address placed on the short side (done all the time).

I just finished setting up my first shipping business policy with ground advantage for 0-4 Ounces and had no problem. But in the video he say you're probably going to need 4-8 Ounces, 8-12 Ounces, 12-16 Ounces, 1 pound- 2 pounds, 2 pounds- 4 pounds. So when I try to do more shipping business policies I just a error message "Please provide the correct information in the highlighted fields This policy is the same as your existing policy Ground Advantage 0-4 Ounces. You can either use your existing policy or make changes to this one." Can anyone help?

You can always create another shipping policy and delete old ones. You just need to create another shipping policy. In your title put something like Ground Advantage OVER 2 POUNDS and set your price higher. You can make all of the shipping policies you like with different price points.

I just shipped a USPS package through eBay that required signature. I'm not sure why someone thought you couldn't, but I really do use it often. I usually require a signature if an item is over $250. eBay actually requires it if the items sells for more than $750. So, not only it is available, but eBay automatically requires it above $750. @@Voltomess

You don't have to. You could rely on the policies that eBay already has. But, if you have the policies in place that you've built with your preferences, it's easier and faster to choose from one that you've created. So, you're not lost at all. In fact, I didn't create policies for a long, long time. I think going forward that I will just to streamline my listing process.

I would think so. Since all the funds are going through eBay anyway, your money isn't coming directly from PayPal. I don't have any control over what forms of payment eBay accepts. Saying you only accept PayPal might run some people off. Unless you are somehow not in eBay's managed payment system, you can't stop someone from paying with any form of payment eBay accepts.

It has been. According to eBay, that is only supposed to be for the first 30 days. I have been in communication with eBay to get clarification on that. But, having the policies for Ground Advantage in place is making it easier for Melody and I to make new listings that use them.

i SOLD 7 VINTAGE DRINKING GLASSES TO A BUYER IN NORTH CAROLINA (i AM IN CALIFORNIA). i CHARGED $14,.00 SHIPPING. He requested priority mail shipping but it was going to cost almost $25.00 to ship that way. So, I used Ground Advantage shipping instead and it was only around $9.00 but it does take a little longer. Was I wrong to do this? Shipping is so confusing. I don't have any shipping policies set up and I never seem to know exactly how much to charge for shipping even though I have been selling for awhile.

If you put Ground Advantage in your listing, it's not an issue at all. If you listed it with Priority and downgraded it to Ground Advantage, they would have a legitimate complaint. I have been defaulting to Ground Advantage. No one complains if I upgrade.

No worries! I think the biggest take away as far as location goes is that you would need to consider shipping distances into your pricing. Even where I'm at, there are still times that shipping options like the USPS padded flat rate envelope might be better than a 2 pound Ground Advantage package. It's just hard for me to recommend pricing to anyone who sells from a different location and has entirely different goods.

Business policies are too complicated for me.. I will wait until ebay punishes me for not doing it. So far I bulk edited the item I sell most of -- ball caps for 8oz by ground advantage. The others will have to wait and see.
