Using 3 day shipping when first staring is the best. Why? Maybe you you don’t have the right box size, or packing materials, what ever. You have that handling time. But remember this one thing "under promise and over perform." If you ship the same day your item was purchased and send it off that day, the customer is always surprised when they get it early. Buy doing that you have over performed what was promised. And your reviews will reflect that. Of course packing properly and all that too.

Im about to start selling a pretty large collection of toys. I know I may be over preparing but ive spent a few months just planning out photos, packaging and storage. I decided to go with recording everything in a spreadsheet, documenting the photos, weight and assign everything a unique ID number. Ill add items to the spreadsheet as I photo and tag them with an Identifier. Ill pre pack immediately after photos are taken, match the ID number to the boxes and store my packed items in a tote so they can ship immediately when sold without having to pack orders on the fly. If people buy a bulk lot then I just put those smaller boxes in a larger box. Now I just need the time to implement any of that. 🤣🤣

I'm just not that organized. LOL It would definitely make shipping easier. The only thing to plan for in this scenario is customer questions. If the packages are sealed and you have to take it out...that's a pain. I know from experience. So, when I do pack things up, ready to go, I never seal them anymore.

I include free shipping, (and 1 day) I think it helps get a top seller badge, and if you get multiple orders you can really save some money. If shipping wasn’t included, for multiple orders people would expect combined shipping costs.

That's definitely harder. You could set the flat rate at the CA destination. You'd always have the option of refunding the difference if it was way off. As long as that shipping rate wasn't so high that it killed your sales. Thank you for the kind words!

I’m in Hawaii, so I’m already far from the US continent. I think flat rate (probably not priority) ground advantage makes sense. But I might do free shipping knowing my item has to include shipping. If you do flat rate or free shipping from Hawaii, I'd probably use a shipping calculator and use something like New York as the destination. That should give you a number that's pretty close to as expensive as it would get. And, of course, compare the USPS Priority Flat Rate options, too. Use things like the padded flat rate envelope and see how much those would cost.

Thanks for the video. Does anybody ever come back to you and argue they paid to much for shipping? (Meaning you charged for 8 x 8 x 8 box, but you sent it in a 8 x 4 x 4 box instead and shipping was cheaper of what you charged them).

No, I don't ever get that. I don't display the cost on the label. And, if the weight was the same, an 8x8x8 box doesn't cost any more to ship than an 8x8x4. The size of the box can make a box difference once you pass up one cubic foot, though. Probably the biggest reason I don't get that is because, if the charge was much more than the cost of shipping, I typically refund the difference without the customer ever having to ask.

Interesting. If it's worth selling, I'm ship it in something insured. So, Ground Advantage or Priority. If it's under $20, I'd ship it with eBay's Standard Envelope. Coins are allowed for that.

I have videos showing me dropping off the items. BUT, once you've bought your label from eBay and put it on your package, you aren't paying the post office anything else. The money they charge for shipping comes out of the money you paid for the label. So, you aren't giving them anything else when you drop it off. You just drop it off.

Don't know if everybody has this service but I have the post office pick up at the house. I get the order, I package it up, I put the label on it and schedule USPS pick up online. I place it on my front porch and when the mailman comes, package gone. Saves me from having to drive to the post office and drop it off.

Let's say I ship an item and I pay for 12 ounces. But it actually weighed 15 ounces, and I had just messed up. I would have underpaid for shipping. By the same token, let's say the package was 12 ounces, but I accidentally typed 21 ounces. I would have way overpaid.

I have a video on media mail that is applicable to books and paper. But, for the most part, you could put Ground Advantage on almost every item and be ok. Even a padded flat rate envelope would be cheaper than what your customer was charged. But it will get easier. You can do this

Hi Scott, I followed along with your video and set the same shipping policies as you showed. I then came across the USPS Postal Explorer that lists shipping rates. Sadly, I am more confused than I was before. It tells me that a flat rate envelope 12.5 x 9.5 is 9.85. It also states that USPS Ground Advantage-Retail charges from $5 to $8 for under 1 lb (I assume this is for calculated). I am confused where the $5.99 came from. I am guessing it comes from experience of shipping things? Also, can you tell me the difference between retail and commercial? I can't find a definition of terms on the Postal Explorer. Yes, the $5.99 is just a guesstimate on my end. I should have been clearer. With my flat rate prices, I just try to get relatively close. If it's a little bit high or low, I don't worry about it. Does that make more sense?

Thank you for your videos! I currently sell on Poshmark but wish to sell on eBay. My question is this: Do I have to weigh all my items before cross listing from Poshmark to eBay? It would be such a hassle to have to pull my items & weigh them. This would be for calculated shipping, correct? What would you advise is best way to ship if I find that most of my clothes weigh under a pound or two? And I want to avoid having to weigh everything. Would this be flat rate shipping? If so, can I use priority mail packaging? I’m still unclear on how flat rate shipping works and is it more expensive for the buyer? Thank you!

If you use USPS Priority materials, you would need to ship Priority mail. If everything fits in a Priority Padded Flat Rate envelope, you could charge $8.99 and that would cover the cost of the label and all (or most) of any fees. BUT, if you don't want to weigh things, you could guess and charge an amount that will get you close enough to not worry one way or the other. I charge $5.99 for t-shirts and I ship them USPS Ground advantage. I use poly mailers that are fairly cheap. Jeans are heavier. So, I'd probably charge $8.99 and use Ground Advantage. The benefit of just putting Ground Advantage on everything is that it is almost always cheaper. BUT, NO ONE complains if you upgrade them to Priority. So, if there's an item that ships easier with Priority (or even cheaper), you can always upgrade. If you use calculated, you could estimate the weight and the packaging you're going to use and probably get pretty close with some experience. I have enough ROI in my items that a dollar or two doesn't sink my battleship if I miss a little on shipping. Only you can decide if you have that kind of cushion. :-)

The poly mailers.. how do you measure something like clothing which doesn't have a fixed shape??

Generally speaking, I use the outside dimensions of the mailer plus the thickness. For example, for a 10x13 poly mailer, the first 2 measurements are 10X13. Then, I enter the maximum thickness of the package after I've inserted the item into it. So, a pair of jeans might end up being 10X13X4. A t-shirt might be 10x13x2. Does that help?

I am setting up business policies. For shoes, priority mail shoe box, do I use flat same to call buyers or can I use calculated? If flat must be used, do I get the prices from USPS? Thank you

If you want to use the Priority mail shoe box, I would go with calculated until you see what it costs. Just know the shipping weight as it will vary depending on the shoes. Enter the 15x8x6 USPS Priority shoes box size and the shipping weight and choose calculated. If I were to start selling shoes today, that's what I'd do.

If I use ground advantage will the shipping fee be charged/deducted through the item i sold through ebay or do i have to pay upfront for shipping at Usps. 2 years ago i sold something and i chose usps ground, I think it was parcel select ground ( i just remember it saying ground) as it was the cheapest way to send item and when I got the the post office to scan my QR code and get a label i had to pay for the shipping upfront from my pocket. It happened 2 different occasions using ground. It wasnt deducted from the item i sold. I had to pay at the usps store for the label. I haven't done ebay in 2 years and there's been changes. It should come from the proceeds of your sale. If it is a brand new account, that might vary. But, typically, it won't come out of pocket.

Scott, I use calculated shipping, buyer pays for shipping. Is it a good idea to set up a shipping policy with say 3 choices - ground advantage, priority, ups. Then, when a buyer brings up my listing, he can go to the shipping line, click on more details, and pick which service he wants to use. Is this a good practice to use?

You certainly can. I don't typically do that. I set mine up for what would be the cheapest. For the vast majority of people, they want the cheapest option. When I tried it, I ended up with people wondering why it cost more when they selected the most expensive method. They just didn't read. So, I don't offer that. If someone contacts me and asks for a faster method, I can always add it.

If I do not enter weight and dimensions on my listing, is it still possible for my item to sell internationally through the EIS program? I have had a couple shipments go EIS in the past. I usually don't put weight and dims and just charge flat rate instead. But how does the International customer know what Ebay will charge beyond Chicago if I don't list how big the package is.

You're probably ok as long as it is under one cubic foot and under 4 pounds. I think those are the weight and dimensions for First Class International. But...I'm not positive. I've worried about the exact same thing before. So, I have just started including weight and measurements on all of my listings even if I'm charging a flat rate.

You still pay for the label because the post office will still charge for the shipping. Think about the label like you would stamps. Whether you buy your stamps from the post office or somewhere else, you still have to pay for them. Labels work the same way.

Oh wow...what a great question. I hadn't even considered the question. You have 2 day shipping FROM THE TIME THAT THEY"VE PAID. So, your clock doesn't start ticking until the buyer has paid for the item.

I've been watching your videos for few days now and have learned a lot!! I'm new to Ebay selling and have encountered something I can't find a solution to... selling multiples of the same item with calculated shipping. I make soap. The soap comes in about 20 fragrances. Each bar of soap weighs 4.5 oz. When setting up the calculated shipping, it asks how much does one bar of soap weigh and the dimension of the package I'll be shipping it in. If I sell 1 bar of soap it gets shipped in a poly mailer weighing 5 oz. for XX dollars. If I sell 4 bars of soap it weighs 18 oz and gets shipped in a box. The 4 bars weigh more than the one bar. How does Ebay figure out the calculated shipping charge for the multiple soap bar order and charge the correct shipping fee?? Thank you. If you can't respond, I certainly understand. I've searched Ebay's help but to no avail. Ebay shipping seems to be set up for singular sales, not multiples of the same item. I'll keep looking for an answer :)

What I would do is up your charge for each additional piece in a way that covers the extra weight by the time you get to the 4th bar. If it's going to run 75 cents more for the 4th bar, raise each bar's shipping cost by 25 cents. Does that make sense?

I'm sorry it wasn't more clear. You're still buying a Post Office (or UPS or FedEx) label. You're just buying it through eBay. The Post Office eventually gets the money from eBay. By buying it through eBay, you get a big discount and tracking is automatically uploaded. Does that make sense?

If you are eligible, you are automatically opted into eBay's International Shipping program. You can opt out if you choose. To opt out of eBay International Shipping: Go to My eBay and select Account. Select Shipping preferences. Select Opt Out on the right-hand side of eBay International Shipping. Select Done.

I don’t understand where you get the cost you got for the price of shipping. Also I don’t understand of how to use the priority boxes you get from USPS. How do you figure the cost of does eBay figure that? This is so confusing because I don’t know how you can determine the cost of the box and packing when first listing the item. I know. It seems overwhelming. Shipping is a lot like driving. When you first get behind the wheel...it's a lot. But it gets easier and easier. I have a good idea what my items cost to ship just from experience. I've shipped enough stuff that I have a pretty good idea what it'll weigh and cost when it's ready to go. You CAN let eBay figure out the cost for you by using calculated shipping. If you use that, go ahead and have your item packed in it's shipping material before you weigh and measure it. Then, it'll be more accurate. USPS Priority is just a service that the post office offers. If you are using that shipping service, you can use the free Priority materials. There are two types of Priority materials. There are the boxes and envelopes that have to be weighed to figure out how much shipping will cost. And there are some "flat rate" ones that will cost the same no matter how much weight you pack into it. As far as using a different box and that changing the weight, I always round-up the weight when I'm shipping. So, if the box is slightly different, it doesn't have a big impact. I hope that helps a little.

The ONLY issue with you selling on eBay at 17 is that you are still technically a minor. So, you will need someone over the age of 18 to open the account. But eBay clearly states that an underage user can use the platform with the permission of the adult. As far as ability? Heck, at 17 you are probably more technologically literate that most of the people in my generation. If you're willing to do the work, I can think of any reason at all that you couldn't be successful.

It wasn't an incredibly clear notification, was it? Here's the bottom line, when using calculated shipping on eBay, the default after that date is going to be to pass along your shipping discount to the buyer. And, it will automatically choose the least expensive option for the buyer. The idea being that, cheaper shipping results in more sales. What isn't clear to me yet is if it will default to a carrier other than USPS (or whichever carrier I've chosen). For me, anything other that USPS is REALLY inconvenient. Like you, I don't use a lot of calculated shipping. I will probably opt out of defaulting to the cheapest method until I know more. Here's their page explaining it. If you have a flat shipping price in there, it'll show them that. If you try to use calculated shipping and don't have the shipping weight and size in there, it's going to give them the wrong price.

As long as your listing showed a different shipping, don't worry about that. I'm not sure why eBay does that, but I've seen it, too. As long as my listing said "Ground Shipping" or "Economy shipping," I'm not obligated to ship it Priority. And most likely your buyer didn't check anything unless you allowed different shipping methods.

Help!!! I accepted an offer from seller and went to process it. I accidentally marked it as paid because I thought it paid automatically when I accepted the offer but it will not let me print label because they haven't paid. If you are the seller, I don't think it's as easy to mark it unpaid and it was to mark it paid. I wouldn't immediately cancel it if that's the case. I would contact eBay for Business on Facebook and let them know what happened. They might be able to reset it so the buyer can pay you. One thing isn't quite clear. You said that you accepted an offer from a seller. Offers from sellers sometimes come in when you looked at an item while working on your comps. So, did you accidentally buy something? If you did that, ask the seller to cancel it and let them know you bought it by mistake.

.... well here's how it went. I contacted seller told him I made a mistake and clicked on seller paid trying to print label. I canceled the sale as shipping label error. It relisted item, I changed price to give him discount for my error and turned off the offers so he had to pay immediately. Contacted him that new listing was up with discount for his trouble. He paid and the sale went through. He seemed very patient and understanding with my error. I guess I learned a valuable lesson and hopefully I don't get dinged or bad feedback. I've sold 5 items in the past few days. It's been a good week other than that issue.

The number of days you select does ultimately have an impact on your rating. For brand new resellers, I personally think setting things up so that you can always ship on time is more important.

Yes. The only "exception" would be eBay’s Standard Envelope. Ebay provides a "tracking" number, but it isn't actually tracked by the post office.

I'm sorry it wasn't clear. When you check that box to offer International Shipping, you are offering to ship that package without going through eBay’s International Shipping Program. You are going to ship it directly to the buyer. If you have opted into eBay’s International Shipping Program, all of your listings are included by default.
