Another thing I did for my "prepper pantry" is to make a spice bucket (and yes, by the time I was done, it filled a 5 gallon bucket!). I just *assume* I have the spices & herbs I love when I start a recipe which might not be so if you cannot replenish. I went thru my spice cabinet and made note of EVERYTHING I use then, when my local Rural King had a sale on spices, got an extra of them all. Some items I use a lot of I buy at Sam's. Find your own best deals on what YOU like! Salt (and an extra 5 lbs of that!), pepper, garlic & onion powders, cayenne pepper, cumin, oregano, basil, thyme, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, beef & chicken bouillon cubes .... etc, etc. I overwrapped then vacuum sealed the original containers to help preserve shelf life. Now, I KNOW I have everything I need to make a tasty meal from my food storage (even rice & beans ) and I never run out of any I might need. When I need more in my kitchen I just go "shopping" from my storage bucket then add it to my grocery list to restock and keep things rotated also.

That's a great idea. There are some spices I go through pretty fast. I've found that buying in bulk through a Fair Trade business like Frontier Co-OP keeps my supplies up.

I paid more attention over the last 2 years on how much ground beef, chicken, pork and veal that I use in a year. I am replacing my meats as I use them. I use alot of thick sliced bacon in soups, beans, sauerkraut, etc. All of my recipes call for 8 slices of bacon. We purchase the big package and divide the bacon into 8 pieces each. I freeze them in individual freezer wrap. Now we are learning to dehydrate. Thank you Darcy for providing such indepth information.

I bought 700.00 worth of stuff a year and a half ago. My husband thought I was crazy. I told him we are fixing to be locked down. Well we were. He was out of work for 6 weeks and we had everything we needed here. I even bought powdered milk, freezer well stocked, and made bread from scratch. We didnt have to go get groceries for a month. Then we got fresh fruit, eggs, and milk. It was very enlightening to see how we could find/recycle different meal ideas and leftovers to eat with zero waste. I even cooked the meat bones down in the crock pot and pureed them to supplement the dog food. We had coffee, water, and tea to drink. I never thought of doing it months out though. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and I am researching ways to organize my pantry better. We have a small walk in pantry, use our utility closet space and some room in a spare bedroom currently. No basement as we live in Florida....

Thank you Darcy. I like how you explained this practical and concise way to stock the pantry. You can find an expanded explanation of this by Wendy Dewitt from LDS. She has a great video on how to prepare for a year's supply of food storage. In short, make a list of 7 breakfasts and 7 dinners that you like to eat for a week (per person). Write out on a recipe card all the ingredients with instructions needed for 1 meal... and so on for each breakfast/dinner. Once you have a week's worth of stock, do another week with different recipes, and so on. I thought the video was worth the watch.

I really like beans, but found that all legumes and nuts trigger excruciating migraine attacks. I'm always delighted to find a meal planner who doesn't immediately plug beans and rice! I do stock canned beans for my husband. He makes his own version of hummus, which he enjoys for lunch. Sometimes we have tacos and then he has beans as a filling. I used to make lentil rissoles, white bean curry, bean loaf, samosas, and many other tasty things. Exclusion diets proved that beans and nuts are off the menu for me.

I have had to short term rely on my pantry, not my long term storage, after my divorce before I found adequate employment to support us, after a hurricane when we were left without power ( thank God I didn't have my freezers then) and when covid first hit. It was such a sense of relief and I learned what I was missing when you actually have to live off it. So I would recommend that people " try out" their pantry to see what they're missing.

Brilliant video. I started prepping a about 3 5 years ago. When covid hit the UK we lived off my preps for the first 7 months as I am classed as extremely clinical vulnerable and although could get food deliveries wanted to minimise the risks . I decided not to restock as we were due to move now that I have I have a full larder cupboard filled with empty jars so starting from scratch but those 7 months has given me a better idea of what we eat rather than what I thought we ate so going to be much more focused this time.

Thanks for another great video Darcy! Definitely store what you eat, eat what you store. Great point about prepping for the situation in which the regular cook in the family can’t cook for some reason. I make SO many soups, including beans and lentils. I love being able to shop according to what is on sale, then cook from what I have in my pantry. I also learned dehydrating from you. I especially love dehydrating cooked frozen mixed vegetables and greens, easy to throw in soups and other dishes.

Very, very helpful! I have wasted so much food and $$$. Started canning recently and just bought the Cosori six tray dehydrator as well. I try process what is already in my pantry or freezer. Cook, eat, and then freeze or can etc... Mostly canning soups ATM but large batches give me an immediate meal and several more. I will generally buy the fresh meat to add to existing preps.

Great tips! Great to manage your pantry too! Thank you Darcy! I usually do it for when you go RVing, but I think it would be simpler if I use your method, e, as you say, we end up making the same meals our family like over and over. Also because when we go RVing, we eat the same food as at home, more or less. So it would be simpler for making the menu for our trips. Even better, I am getting recipes ready that are so quick to make with dehydrated food… that is so great! Thank you Darcy, your sites are my favorite that I go to everyday. ❤️

My husband wont eat butter beans or lima beans. But if I'm making Brunswick stew I use a speckled butter bean and he'll eat it. I only buy 1 5 lb bag a year. But this year I'm going to try to grow some. When I first started prepping I had all kinds of people telling me I was doing it 'wrong' and that I 'had to have this and that'. Well why waste money (something we don't have a lot of) on foods my family wont touch? I got a lot of ugly responses to that. We make chili mac differently. I usually use leftover chili and add elbow mac to it then top it with cheddar. I did ours by 'type', like Mexican, Italian, Asian, etc, because I knew it would work best for us. Italian can be spaghetti or a baked pasta, same sauce same ingredients. I also build in 'extra meals' into our menu in case we're not in the mood for what's on the menu. Doesn't happen often but its nice knowing we have a backup plan. And if we don't eat those meals, it rotates to the following week's menu.

Your way is probably more accurate, but my crew doesn't eat chili, either :(

Thanks for this! I have always struggled to "prep" my pantry. my kids/hubby, mil/parents, friends, thought I was going off the deep end going "prepper waiting for the zombie outbreak" with laughs but still it wasn't getting support. I would try and "stock up" on stuff and hubby would say, do you really need 12 boxes of pasta - it was on sale and we used it all the time, duh!... yeah. so prior to 2020, hubby got sick and was in and out of the hospital. we starting to "use" my "prepping", then 2020 (which we got sick... like in February - thank goodness hubby and 1 kid, just got ick symptoms, while other dd got flu-like, but I was out for weeks and had noticeable breathing issues when I went back to work all BEFORE lockdown) hit. other than TPaper, which we used up a majority during so many hospital stays and never replacing, we were pretty ok. so great. but the struggle is still alive and going. trying to figure out what and how much to stock up on. we have pretty much become an ingredient cooking now and like you, I need a recipe. Have been trying to figure out a better way, and love this idea. I can no longer work due to SEVERE asthma and can't even wear a mask (I ALWAYS keep social distance even when others don't! - hint for those who wear a mask but STILL don't distance - think personal space people - lol) so we have gotten to only grocery shopping like once a month other than perishables. thanks again for this idea! I will defiantly be trying it out. BTW - hubby now sees the "prepping" as being a good thing and friends and family don't think I was crazy after all... go figure.

Friday is generally sausage and beans night. Can be commercial sausage with my canned beans, onions and/or sauerkraut optional. Or it's my home canned Italian sausage with white beans (I often make the sausage with turkey meat) in a tomato sauce. Or my own bratwurst with beans, definitely with sauerkraut (home made). Every 2 weeks or so I make pizza on Saturday. Look up John Kirkwood no knead pizza dough. It's enough for 2 pizza, so for us it's 2 meals. So, I have canned tomato sauce, I have canned Italian sausage, I usually have mushrooms on hand (it only takes 2), maybe sliced olives or sliced onions, and some grated mozzarella cheese. Delicious, cheap, pantry stable, and if you don't need 2 pizzas in one night it's Monday night as well.

A really good explanation! I went by...what would I miss if I couldn’t get it anymore? What goes into that meal? Then, how often do I eat spaghetti, a pizza, beef stew, etc. Was doing very well...then, it was when I was putting dry spice mixes together like onion soup mix, chilli seasoning, taco seasoning, ranch dressing, etc...I learned quickly to bulk up on the spices. I started buying them in bulk...could be bay leaves one month, allspice the next,etc. The stores are charging crazy prices on spices. Keep the containers and you can refill them from your own stock. I can see a small jar of peppercorns going to ten dollars. Why not? Seeing other ground up spices and whatever they have sweep off the floor and jarred going for $8.00. Well, that’s my input.

I am prediabetic. I would like to eat the grain/bean/rice type of meal. I am going to try fermenting grains to see if it lowers the carbs enough so I can eat those items. I will be testing with my glucose meter. My ready prepared meal is canned soup or chili. Even if it was warm weather, anybody in my house can open the jar and warm it.

I wish you well. Soaking grains was something done in the past and should have been continued...lost on people now.

Parboiled rice is the best fot pre & diabetics. Beans are best soaked and cooked in pressure cooker. I lower carbs by increasing non starch vegetable to bulk up the meal. Miracle noodles and brown rice noodles are best, every now and then. Fermentation adds nutrition but nothing decreases the carbs. Look up resistant starches.

Thank you Darcy for this great video. What is the best way to freeze your prepped hamburger for your recipes? I don’t want it to get freezer burn.
@ThePurposefulPantry3 жыл бұрын
I freeze it in a vacuum seal bag.

I live on my own... so I only need 1 cycle as I can eat 1 serve and freeze 3 other serves... gives me 4 months of food if I eat 1 meal per month or 2 months of food if I eat 2 meals per month.

I would like to make 1 pot with al the dried vegetables and herbs that I use for pasta. Can I put them together? And can I take dried vegetables and herbs from other pots and take them out and in the other pot? I want to use it this fall/winter.
@ThePurposefulPantry3 жыл бұрын
Yes - as long as they are all properly dried.

My problem is not restocking dry goods like disposable non food items. For example I started out with 12 boxes of trash bags and now am down to 2 or 3 boxes.
@ThePurposefulPantry3 жыл бұрын
That's when you put it back on the shopping list - or stock up when a sale that happens THEN make a conscious effort to restock!

@@ThePurposefulPantry Yes indeed. I actually got so many to start by doing just that! 😁 Buying only when on sale but getting extras too,each time.

Meat is so expensive in the grocery store even at Walmart that I can get meat for probably 8 months at the butcher in the meat deal that I can choose and swap items for just over $100. I might get five meals six meals at the grocery store for that price.
