This rivals any of the best tutorials I've ever seen. The audio is perfect - not too quiet, not a ton of background noise. The narration is extremely easy to understand (linguistically). Every detail is covered; we're not left to chase down 500 keystrokes that were executed without commenting on what was done or why. I really wouldn't know how to improve this. Awesome job!

I am SO incredibly glad I found this, and of course HUGELY grateful that you made this, because this is SOOOO HELPFUL! (Btw, you probably know by now, but 'fresnel' is pronounced with the 'fre' from 'fresh,' and the nel from 'Nellie,' with the accent on the 'nel,' so it's 'freh NELL,' if that makes sense. It's derived from a name, I think, which explains a bit of its oddity. But don't give a DAMN how you pronounce it, because this video is SOOOO HELPFUL. lol.) Thank you thank you THANK YOU!! Hope things are going great for you. Cheers!

I've been looking for something like THIS for some time now, so THANK YOU! Open up blender, click file at the upper left of the program which will open up a pop-up list. Click user preferences from that, and then the Blender User preferences window will open. Look for "Install Add-on from File..." near the bottom of this window and click that. It'll bring you to a darker menu to look for the .py that you need to have downloaded from the google drive. In this case, you said it was in your documents. When you have it selected, click "Install Add-on from File" which will now be near the upper-right of this new menu. Now it's installed, but you need to make sure it is enabled, so look for it under "User" which is a category in your Blender User preferences window. Import-Export: Import OpenStreetMap (.osm) needs to be checked. When that's done, you're good to go. Optionally, you can also click "Save User Settings" if you ever want to have this load every time Blender opens up.

can we import this into unity with the textures
@autbo
@autbo 8 жыл бұрын
You could buy it would probably be laggy. You need to make LODs for the buildings and other things.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think LODs will help at all. See it like this, the whole dataset is only 33000 vertices, close to what a single human character takes up in modern games for example, while GPU easily has a couple millions of vertices of throughput per frame. So you could conceivably draw everything as one drawable and it'll be absolutely fine. In contrast, once you start splitting out the separate buildings, you increase number of distinct objects, and Unity will have an issue with that, so LOD is likely to exacerbate the issue in this case. However, it will already be slow if the buildings are indeed individually textured, because Unity will split the object into drawables, each with one texture, and draw them individually, thus incurring high CPU overhead, and high API overhead from switching textures. A solution would hypothetically be atlassing, i.e. merging all textures into one, so the whole city can be drawn as a single or a mere handful of drawables. I don't have an idea on how to approach this though from within Blender.
@SianaGearz
@SianaGearz 7 жыл бұрын
Oh whoops, the model comes off OpenSteetMap untextured and he manually assigned a mere handful of textures. Go ahead, dump it into Unity as single object, it'll be fine. The merged vertices will be unmerged along normal seam and there will be a few times more of them by the time it gets to the GPU, but at 120000, it's still fine. Unity limits number of vertices per drawable to 65536, so it'll try to split it up, but if that fails, you can just do this manually beforehand. An unfortunate case can happen that you get overdraw accumulation, basically if you look from one side, it's fast, but from the other, it's slow... but then maybe you can fight back with randomized sort in Blender of vertices and faces.

Bro, I used the map from your description, and got the .osm file after selecting small place (~7mb) using the "Export" option, but no heights, I think the problem is with the free .osm import add-on, please check yourself with a fresh blender and the free .osm import add-on. Great tutorial, Steve! I wasn't aware of OSM before, it's amazing how much detail is available. It's worth buying the full addon as he updates it often and the options are more extensive. One question: when you apply the texture to the buildings the front and side don't match very well. Do you have to apply the textures per face to fix it? Thanks.

@@AndrewSheensp Not sure but probably no because all game engines use their own shader, material and lighting system. So only model.

Fantastic tutorial. Many thanks for doing it. I'm having a problem when I try to intersect the river though. It doesn't create a dip. All it does is either flatten out my river mesh to the plane or, if I add the modifier to the plane, remove everything but the part attached to the river. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Anyway, great tutorials. Really helpful. Thanks.

Augustin-Jean Fresnel (/freɪˈnɛl/ fray-nel )10 May 1788 - 14 July 1827), was a French engineer and physicist who contributed significantly to the establishment of the theory of wave optics. Fresnel studied the behaviour of light both theoretically and experimentally. He is perhaps best known as the inventor of the Fresnel lens, first adopted in lighthouses while he was a French commissioner of lighthouses, and found in many applications today. His Fresnel equations on waves and reflectivity also form the basis for many applications in computer graphics today - for instance, the rendering of water.

nice tutorial the blender osm from your link is th only one thats working for me. Why I do not know. I also tryed the payed version. Just error messages???? ;) I was just wondering why you not also extruded the roofs. I put the particel system on an extra "roof object" looks better in my eys and solved the texture problems. and the first roof seperation got the particels. So you have two roof objects. than you can 1. seperate the extruded version (hit p in edit mode => by loose parts; it takes a while) 2. select all and set origin to geometry 3. scale just a lil bit (in y and x directions with pivot point setted to individual origins) so you have better lokking roofs and taht lil tipp also solve some texture failures the automatical mapping created. thats the only thing I optimized. :D But except to above mentioned very good tutorial. helped me a lot!! thx!!!
