Navigating the topic of screen time as a mom in today’s world can definitely be overwhelming. Joy is a fellow mom of seven, and she has a passion for helping families put down the screens and enjoy the beauty of life outdoors through her nature study resources. In our conversation, we address the feeling of overwhelm moms experience when outdoor time seems like just one more task to add to their already full plate. Rather, Joy encourages us that time spent outdoors can become a natural part of the daily rhythm that brings richness and joy to the whole family. If you have a goal of less screen time and more nature time this summer, don’t miss this episode!
Join us as we discuss:
- Getting your kids outside doesn’t have to be one more thing on your to-do list
- Creating an outdoor family culture even if you have a small yard
- The importance of free play and allowing kids to be bored
- Helping our kids learn to be intentional with how they use their time
- Getting things accomplished without putting kids in front of screens
- Finding ways to get outside in extreme weather + screen-free indoor activities
- Setting an example for our kids with our own screen time habits

What about families that don't have an adventurous yard and 2 or less kids? I struggle with pregnancy sickness and will not be able to have a bunch of kids and I know siblings can really be eachothers playmates. that alone can make it easier to avoid screens and get them out to at least have each other to play with

I feel sorry for the children today that don't enjoy the outdoors. I have such fond memories of practically living outdoors when growing up. Thank you.

When I went to a friends house that constantly locked the door the moment we got inside, I thought it was so strange, since at my house we always would walk outside randomly, to breathe, to eat Icecream, to pick veggies from the garden or play. When my sis was a baby, bringing her outside when she had crying all day would just quiet her, and immediately she was calm and stop crying.

We are outside for nine months out of the year in Florida, however the summer is unbearable… And it can be downright dangerous to be outside during most of the day. We do allow our son 25 minute stents in the morning and afternoon on his Amazon fire. I set our alarm, and he knows once it goes off it’s time to put it down. This morning, I came to check and see what he was watching, and he is addicted to the reading app… And I’m not unhappy about that. He sees me reading on my Kindle, and has a hard time distinguishing the difference between his device. I think devices are OK, in moderation, but the minute they turn in to a maniac with temper tantrums get me will be going away for good.

Below 20 degrees😂😂😂😂 In the Northern Midwest the limit is like no more than 20 minutes when it's -10 degrees😂😂 when I was in college the air temp was -40 and they didn't cancel classes😂

I would love a video on having too much free time! My kids fight and make huge messes if they don’t have more to do. We homeschool ages 1-12 and the number of interruptions at times where I need to work is outrageous

I love this so much. It's been something that I want so bad but I'm also having to figure out logistically. I have two kiddos, 2 and 1. My one year old is special needs. He can't be in the sun for long periods of time and also cannot get hot. It's been so hard. Our home also doesn't make it easy to access outside. There is no back door so it makes it hard to get my son's medical equipment outside while also dealing with my toddler. I long for a fenced yard with a door from the kitchen to the backyard. I feel like then my daughter can have that time to explore outside while my son can be indoor. It's been hard. I feel guilty for my daughter not having the current freedom to go outside as much as I'd like during this season of life... Love this podcast episode! ❤

I live in central California in the Valley and we often get 105 lately it’s been 108 and we do not get humidity. In those temperatures you feel like you can’t breathe so unless you’re sitting completely still under a tree you’ve got to be inside. Or in water.

This idea has been revolutionary to me. I started saying that when the kids ask to HELP, my automated internal thought is- you're making it HARDER not helping. When I began to reframe it as PARTICIPATION in my own head, I can get on board and strive to find things for my sweet little friends to do "for me. " But thinking of what they can do takes thought. They love to crack eggs. If there's eggshell, we just eat it. Also the sharing and evenness of tasks and instant jealousy is rough too, but human nature can't be out-smarted all of the time and that's where lessons of virtue become valuable.

I'm not ready to give up my kids' TV time but I really enjoyed this chat and felt it was applicable anyway. Even if the best I can do is moderation, it's nice to hear ideas and perspectives. We do spend lots of time outside as well.

I can testify to the screen time. Though I've tried to teach my kids to do: cleaning, cooking, activities, hobbies.....the girls are addicted to screens. When I take it away they are lunatics but after a while their natural personalities shine. But....teachers use tech so it's hard to keep the phone. And when I put limits on each app, they use all the time on each and even though there are limits there, they have the knack of being on their device for 9 hours a day. We did discover once that a friend had shown her how to get past the parent controls. Grrrrr It's so hard. I love my kids and do things anyway and hope they see I didn't sit around. 🙏🏻

Chiming I’m on baby wearing in the summer, had a baby in august and it was a hot one! we have a farm so I had to get outside (and wanted to!) Biker shorts, nursing bra/tank and then a soft wrap like the solly or the ergo embrace carrier (I would basically wear the carrier as my shirt for the day lol) Leave the baby in a diaper and a tshirt or onesie. I also got an XS sun hat for the baby to keep their head protected from the sun! Realistically babies need to be fed/changed so frequently that you/them will probably not overheat because they’ll be off and on you all day.

I also did a 72 hour digital detox and it was amazing, I read glow kids too, I learned a lot about how time consuming and distracting screens are for me, and also how much they negatively affect kids too. You just mentioned Calvin amd Hobbes, my 8 year old daughter has 3 of the comic books and she loves it, yes he's a little bad, but not as bad as screens and what's often on them either. Great episode! I've been waiting for this one!!

This was a sweet chat between two like minded ladies with inspiring ideas. We sometimes just need a reminder to get back to the basics. Speaking of getting kids to help clean reminded me of something I heard or read somewhere. I don't remember where, but this wise mom said she was gently but consistently teaching her children from early on, that "we don't make messes for OTHERS to clean up". (It's not fair to others to clean up OUR messes..) It was a different take on "Clean up after yourself!" I thought that was a good principle to adopt and start teaching my little grandchildren. We have 6 currently, ranging from 13- 2 years old, with a new baby girl due any day!. The 2 and 4 year old girls know that Lolli's "rule" is that we don't make messes for others to clean up. So, it helps to start them young!

I love Lisa very much but I have to say as a person who was raised in the South Bronx of New York there was nowhere for us to eat outside unless we were sitting on the concrete sidewalk with hundreds of cars passing by us, I absolutely love all of these thoughts and as an adult I have my own yard now and follow the Charlotte Mason Way. Yet here is my question, so many KZbinrs focus on the people that are already doing this, that are living a lifestyle that is completely all inclusive of this specific way of raising children, yet my question is , is there anyone out there that can help and put a focus on trying to create more situations like this for those who live and are in not so great places, perhaps single parents who cannot do everything home made, people who struggle and do not have the time or money to actually eat or live this way? I say this all in love, but I also say this as a person who sees this everyday and is frustrated, because this is the majority of how the American population is, so as the majority is this not the population that we should be targeting more?

The thing I've considered is that people who live hand to mouth or are single parents (I've been one) and so on, is they need training. Not "how do I use this boxed meal differently" but more how to cook with natural ingredients and so on. It takes steps. So, maybe stock up on pasta first or even flour (base ingredient for making pasta). But also, stop telling ourselves that we "don't have time." How did the impoverished people living in tenements work 12 hours a day and still do laundry by hand or make bread or sew? After learning a thing it becomes more streamlined and easier and quicker. Now, I can target my shopping. I can also tell myself what I can do without. For example I don't need name brand things to feel good; I don't need to "treat" myself because "I deserve it." Rather I'd rather take my kids to the park in their thrift store clothes and breathe.

I can understand what you are saying. We rasied are oldest children in a small BK apartment, we had to get super creative so I would like to add it is definitely possible maybe just needs to be shared more. My thinking was always finding free ways to explore, spending more time outside our small place even if we had to travel to a nicer part of the neighborhood, so many parks and pools and if to hot or cd so many libraries indoor parks and there are many free things to do. I'm adding the word free because when my older children were younger we had a very tight budget so I am coming from a place of experience. Just wanted to add as I am a mama that has experience both side or apartment living in a rough neighborhood to a mama that now has a yard.

It’s also important to recognize that Lisa is not the model for motherhood. She’s sharing what works for her. If while consuming her content you come across something you’d like to do in your own home, the goal shouldn’t be to emulate Lisa. It should be to grab the principle and make it work the best you can with what you have. No KZbin creator should be accountable to every life circumstance.

Loved this chat so much! Two very resourceful and inspirational mamas! ❤ I wanted to speak to baby wearing in the summer. My sweet baby girl was born in July and my son was just over a year old (almost Irish twins 😅). I absolutely adored wearing her every day in my mobi wrap and just put her in a diaper and teeshirt gown. I also had a c-section with her so not always comfortable but I would tuck an ice band on my belly and under her butt and we both stayed cool. My husband and I also set up an outdoor place space for our toddler that was easily accessible for all of us, safe for our toddler, plenty of comfortable and cool seating options for me and baby girl, and we could spend hours outdoors. I actually preferred being outside when healing from birth as I found the air and sun to be so healing ❤️‍🩹 😊 Amazon also now has a baby wrap that is mesh and allows baby’s skin to breath while baby wearing- I am definitely picking this up for our third baby due in November ❤ Happy Baby Wearing and Happy Outdoor Living 😊
