Slate coasters are one of the best beginner projects because they are a relatively low cost to purchase and if you mess up like I have (multiple times), with a bit of elbow grease or a powered sander you can quickly remove your mistake and re-prep your coaster again and have another go, (OR FOUR).

Why do you have to spray paint it black beforehand? Is that just to get an even color across the entire coaster so the laser doesn't give wonky gradations?

great video - i have an A20Pro and I have tried slate coasters with some success - I have two questions for you why do you paint your coaster black before engraving. Secondly when you are finished engraving do you clean the slate off with a cleaning agent

Thank you. I only use paint to give the images more contrast. I also like to sand my slate flat, as I prefer the flat look to the slate rather than the natural wayveyness to slate. Because I sand the slate flat, it becomes a lighter colour, which is another reason why I do it. After engraving, I use compressed air to remove any debris.

Really ought to be wearing a mask/respirator when machine sanding these. Silicosis is not something to screw with.

Thank you. Prior to laser engraving, I use a matte black automotive spray paint. If I can't source matte paint, I'll settle for using a satin finish but never use a gloss. It is hard to see your finished result if you finish with a gloss in certain lights.

Why don’t you just etch the coaster without sanding and painting? You get a really good contrast between the original darker split surface and the etched parts. I do this all the time with anything from text or logos up to detailed photos.

You are welcome. I have left mine as they are. There are videos on youtube already about different finishes for slate. I know you can lose detail in your engravings by applying a gloss finish to them so I would refrain from using any gloss product to protect them. I have seen people use different oils and matte finishes. I hope this helps.

Great tutorial. Just a question: I follow the instructions with the exception of me having a round coaster, but when I pull up the preview window, it’s all white. If I change the mode to Stucki, I get a good preview. So then I decided to run the job, and it’s all white on the coaster. Any idea to why that is? Thank you.

Yes absolutely. Every material that I can use on my laser cutters I test thoroughly before attempting a project.

When sanding slate, use a mask! Slate contains silica, and you don’t want silicosis.
