I missed what you sprayed on the coasters before you put them in the laser. What was the spray? Thanks!

Excellent demonstration with usable settings and information. I'm thinking about doing a set of coasters for my city's historic locations. This is the perfect starting place. Thanks much!

Thanks for this video. I've learned quite a bit about lightburn from just a few videos you have posted. I did notice you have an Etsy link for your shop. Have you considered a website of your own? It does require a bit more of your time but you don't have as many fees as using Etsy.

I had to space the plywood I'm cutting 2mm above an aluminum honeycomb bed to get the best results. The aluminum bed with 6mm cells may not be allowing for enough airflow and the heat sink effect makes it harder to get a clean cut on 3mm basswood. I'm using a 20 watt diode laser. The MDF bed would have much greater airflow.

I recently purchased a Longer Ray 5 10w unit. I want to learn about laser engraving. This is an outstanding video, every step was explained very well. My only question is, what type of paint did you use?

Thank you for your positive comment. The paint i used was just an off the shelf automotive spray paint. I am currently working on 3 key setup videos on using test files to get lasers dialled in for the best results engraving, cutting and kerf adjustment. So if you are interested keep an eye out for those in the near future. Thanks again.

Thank you so much I was using Fill which cut it down some. But this a bonus in the way the laser moves and same me more time. Thank you for sharing your time and knowledge with the community!

Got my first Laser engraver just 2 days ago and have been trying to get a coaster to show a nice image. As others have stated below people say do this and that but never really explain it or show you exactly what they mean so this video was so helpful. Also was not aware you could sand them back and try again so that makes my mistakes easier to take :)

Well clearly as above I am a noob but I followed along with this and when using greyscale it literally just engravers a grey blob :( Did try Jarvis and it sorta showed some detail but again was not clear at all. I am guessing I am struggling with the laser power and the speed. Oh well all a learning curve. Have the Falcon Pro 2 with 40w laser but changed it to 22w output. Might try the free 1.6W laser that also came with the printer.

I have found that several coats of polyurethane spray paint will really make images pop. The first coat or two might not look too good, but another coat or two makes slate images look very good. And, if the slate is actually going to be used for a coaster, it will protect from staining.

Brilliant video. Ive been struggling for months trying to convert photos to slate. This is by far the best video for this. I couldn't figure out some of the settings but i have a slightly older version of Lightburn. Im off to Etsy now to buy the 3D Christmas bauble file.

First and foremost, great tutorial, lots of great information in here that was exactly what I needed. I really appreciate that you did this with a lower end (ish) diode laser as this is what I have, (Otur LM2, Sculpfun S9, and Wainlux K10) So many of the tutorials out here you go to looking for setting information only to find they are using high end commercial lasers that require totally different settings that what I need. Secondly, and I picked up on this before you began the burn, I would have backed up just a little on the Image, I think cutting off the top of your head on the image triggered my OCD just a little, lol. This thought brings up a question, would there be an advantage to creating the "mask" maybe 1/8" or so larger than the media you are engraving, so that you know it goes all the way to the edge of the media you are using? (just a general question there, I am pretty sure that your engraving did infact go to or beyond just slightly the edges of the slate.)

Any reason that you didn't show the grid being used? After all, that's a lot of cutting just to see if this invention suits our projects. Ideally you could divide the grid into sections and it would be easier to replace just the area that needs it most without wasting material. Thanks for the video & cheers. Happy 2025 to you!

this is a huge importance tip to give, and i apreciate a lot, im just starting i dont have any experience yet and cant apreciate more ur advice, i can give you one in return in my humble opinion of course, there are a visual relation between letters on a name or brand in wich the form of the letters just dont fill the same spaces between each other, in this case u can see the sentence RANGE WARDEN, warden its a good balanced word but if u look at RANGE, the separation between R and A and A and N looks higher than the rest, in some cases u can adjust that visual look spacing a bit more the rest of the letters, like N from G and G from E, of course this is not for all texts, just in rare cases that u see it could work for u, Thanks a lot!

For some reason your video at the beginning was only playing audio in the left ear, then it switches. Not a problem for most people but my partner who sent this video to me to check out is completely deaf in the left ear, he shrugged and said it is what it is, but I thought I would just leave a comment so you were aware that the audio has stereo stuff happening when not needed.

Thank you for letting me know. I'm not sure if I can do anything about the audio now it is posted, but I will look in to it. I will do my best to make sure it doesn't happen in the future.

Hi. First of all thank you for purchasing my file. The layers are as follows. The black layer is a fill engraving. The blue layer is a line engraving. The green layer is a cut layer (internal) The red layer is a cut layer (outside) The light layer is a tool path. This doesn't get send to the laser. It's just text to identify the kerf test. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thanks again.
