I worked at the Royal Academy of Art in London for 2o years and as a member of staff would go the the evening class at the RA school that is at the back of the Academy, we often had RA’s to come and watch and comment (rarely) on our work. One evening I was drawing a nude in pastels, the RA stopped at my work and said “good here is an artist who is not afraid to change their work”. I work like you constantly changing until its right no matter what, its risky but its the only way to go. This is such a good bit of teaching (I am a retired art teacher/lecturer) by showing the number of times you change the work until it feels right and also the original(to me) idea of using acrylic skins is brilliant. It’s never too late to learn and never to throw anything away you never know when you will want it…thank you for the tip.

It's definitely a slippery slope changing a painting this much, but I agree-it's the best way to paint in my opinion. In reply to Chris and everybody else, I start of with a vague idea of what I want to do, but most of the time its almost like I am watching another person working not knowing what comes until the brush pastel clay or whatever medium I am using starts to work. There is one tip I can pass on but would think the majority of you now know this. I am old at 83 so have been an art teacher for many years, I realised getting people to start to work with the wrong hand totally relaxed them, gave them the permission to make mistakes and not care. It also works for professionals who had seized up. I sometimes still do this when my work has become too ‘tight’

I love that idea and tried that while making initial marks on a painting this week. Funny, you are the second person to suggest that in the last couple of days. I'm all in and plan on using my non-dominant had for my next warm-up painting. That will definitely keep my painting loose as I typically am not very functional when it comes to my other hand and art.

@@chrisloudart my main reason for doing this on the very first art class wherever I was in the world, was this. Everybody especially new students who would take a look at the paper in front of them and freeze, knowing lots of people are around them and do not want to draw something silly. By making this the first piece of work, it meant every student could relax knowing that everybody was using the wrong hand so it did not matter, consequently it turned out to be the best drawing…the first exercise was drawing their hand lifesize that way they could not cheat and did not feel they had too, it worked every time the first drawing with the wrong hand had sensitive marks and lines and always was a very good drawing, the second with the hand they always used, was awful, slick, hard and no sensitive marks. Another thing I taught right at the beginning was the copyright mark, a circle with a small c inside it. We all own the copywrite to our work even when we have sold the work, if the buyer wants the copyright which they will realise you have by putting the circle with a c inside it, they will have to buy that off you. If you do sell the copywrite it means the buyer can make cards, calendars use the painting for anything, so always remember the c inside a circle. Also plagiarism, If you copy another artists work must always put the artists name in.e. Picasso . You put After Picasso, followed by your own name i.e. Fred Johns. You cannot sell a copy of anybody’s work. After a hundred years I think that changes…but you need to check. Also check on the things I have put here are still correct I taught for many years …but at 83…one does forget things. Loveday

P.s. always, always date everything and put your signature and the c inside the circle , because quite often looking back at your work, you will suddenly realise ‘oh my god that really is quite good”. Loveday

Something that caught my eye while you were carving out the horizon, I noticed the dark spot at bottom which to me looked like a hole had been dug in order to plant a tree! Just an observation....at 7:55 you covered it with turquoise blue/green.

Hi Chris! I was excited to watch this demo because I thought I was one of the only artists using acrylic skins!!!! I actually do full collages with them. I love your finished piece. Can you tell me, do you wash out that blending brush in between each use? It seems like it would get quite stiff if you didn't. I've never used one, it makes blending acrylic look a lot easier!

Thanks, Leslie! I love using acrylic skins for a splash of color, texture and collage. They're so versatile! Plus I hate throwing such colorful material away. I have three blending brushes, so as I'm painting I'll end up using all three, then wash them out. They do become quite stiff. I'm in a dry climate so that happens pretty fast. I will occasionally squirt a little water on what I'm blending and that helps. They are a lot of fun to play with 😊

Hi Chris, what weight of paper do you paint on? I have 140-lb. watercolor paper asn also 65 and 70-lb. sketch/drawing paper. Diggestions? I am ordering from Amazon many of the tools and products you use, and am especially thrilled over the mats with the clear slip covers. I do the local art tour here along with several art shows and realize I'm shooting myself in the foot by not having small grab-n-go pieces of work. ANyway, you are a huge inspiration! Thanks for making your techniques and experience available!
