7 and 8 (Red:good/evil) "The empire is falling into chaos; Civil war wreaks the lives of our citizens every day. New faction rises overnight to battle the others, each wanting to avenge their families but only catching more in the crossfires. Conflict breads conflict; emotion fuels emotion. Everyone wants the battles to end, but that won't happen until its too late. Some even take your inaction as a sign of weakness, my King, and seek the power of the throne to----gahhgg" Silence rang throughout the courts for what felt like hours after the King murdering his most loyal adviser. All eyes watched as the old man's corpse fell to the ground, slowly bleeding until the king spoke: "Inactive? Nonsense. Nobody will think me weak after today! Guards, take this traitor's remains out of my presence." Nobody moved. "Guards? What did I say? I command you-" "We don't take orders from you anymore," one of the guards spoke, "You're the real traitor here, not him. Lads, now what do we do with traitors to our kingdom?". Many guards nodded and moved towards the king, slowly taking him out of the room to be hanged, leaving the courts in madness to fight over the kingdom. Alliances formed, blood was spilled, the palace staff reported screaming, but upon inspection of the room, there were no survivors.

8 and 2, evil red and white "The hordes of demon minded creatures have breached our walls, our homes, and savagely killed any innocent that would cross their barbaric path. We have tried our laws, our acceptance and our love, but these monstrous sub humans refuse it all. I have gathered you all in this hall today to commence a great cleansing of our city, no orc or goblin will be unskewered and unmaimed. Half the soldiery has abandoned the old flag, as it was a sign of weakness, and every one of your neighbors has already taken the initial phases of actions against these invaders, so what say you folk? I should warn you, we've had some of those aforementioned soldiers ask your precious families about your allegiances, and a couple of black eyes later they ratted all of you out. Your answer to this holy call to action will determine your life, friends." White/Red when taken to the evil end is easily the color of racism imo

I've made a faction for my character in D&D: the black church of Meslam. a white, black, green religion dedicated to Meslam, the god of survival and necessary evil. They believe that life is harsh and unfair, and aim to become just as hardened through exercise and a rigid set of rules. Despite having very sinister imagery and rituals they are concerned with the eradication of cruelty and vice, which they see as unnatural, and act to uphold morality and the law of nature. Their main tenet is "the only true sin is surrender".

@@DiceTry can you tell me what song is playing during the black portion of this video? Also, this video has helped me immensely. I started simply. I have good and evil, white, black and blue factions, one good red and one good green for my campaign I’m running. My favorite so far is called the seven’s ardent. An evil blue faction of lycans whose main goal is the spread of lycanthropy through the use of curses and alchemy. They’re made up of clerics and wizards. They view lycanthropy to be the perfection of humanity and are working towards a world freed from the weakness of humanity.

I am old dungeon master but rather new to the Magic color pie. My favorite color combination is Green and Black however I agree that with DiceTry's opinion that two established Black/Green factions Golgari Swarm and Witherbloom are too similar to each other. So using all combination of good and evil of Black/Green ,I will attempt to create four radically different factions. I am using random generator for the names. 1. Good Green/Good Black, The Myths of the Mountain: A old mountain covered in forests is guarded by an ancient alliance of Rangers and Assassins. Few ever seen any of their members but they are always watching. Any desperate refugees or honorable rebels who enter their forest, will mysterious receive supplies and medicine but any army looking to conquer the land or greedy noble who want exploit the mountain for resources will wind up dead in few days. Their deaths will appear result of natural causes like land slides or an attack by venomous animals but everyone knows it is the work of the Myths of the Mountain. 2. Good Green/ Evil Black, The Druids of the Hellglades: A once healthy swamp has become decrepit and dying because of deforestation and neglect. With the residents of the swamp unable to feed themselves, they turned to the local druid circle for help. The druids said they can return swamp to it's former glory under two conditions. The first condition was that people must return to a simpler and more traditional lifestyle. The second was that all the inhabitants must forge a dark pact with ancient evil nature god. Under the contract the swamp people gain fiendish magic and ability to summon demons but must sacrifice humanoids to the nature god by spilling their blood into the marshy waters. The druids and other residents raid neighboring villages for victims. They believe their vile actions will bring life back to their homeland. Anyone can join the druids and gain their power as long they provide sacrifices and help them restore the swamp. 3. Evil Green/ Good Black, Ravenskull Clan: When Oushzair Empire conquered the Great Valley, All 12 tribes of the land surrender except one ,Ravenskull. The xenophobic tribe of hunters and farmers would bow to no one especially outsiders. They considered other tribe to be cowardly traitors for not fighting the Empire. Using their extensive knowledge of the landscape to their advantage, the Ravenskull Clan's greatest warriors performed brutal guerilla raids on the Empire and the other tribes. Desperate to win the Oushzair Empire spread a deadly magic disease, which infected the Ravenskull warriors. The Clan's champions knew their deaths were inevitable and their tribe would lose to the empire without them, so they performed a noble necromantic ritual. The ritual turned them into undead revenants capable of infecting people with the Empire disease at will. The revenants continue their assaults against the empire and the other tribes to this day. The undead army will not attack wildlife and will defend living Ravenskull members but all others are fair game. The other tribes have pleaded for peace with Ravenskull Clan to stop the attacks but neither undead or living Ravenskulls will listen or forgive them. 4.Evil Green/ Evil Black: Sentinels of Purity: A monastery of merciless monks and deadly ninjas who studied animals and nature for fighting styles. They are taught that seeking power is only natural. All animals and plants must be strong and ruthless to survive. Anything that is weak or unnatural doesn't deserve to live. The masters of monastery enforce strict rules and rigid traditions on the adepts but only those who learn to bend rules can move up the ranks. While the Sentinels train in the isolated wilderness, they have connections to the wealthy and nobility of the greatest cities who hire them for assassinations. They can be hired for any job if enough money and magic weapons is offered but they specialize in killing creatures from other planes. Anything comes another world whether it is a demon, angel or even just a humanoid must be destroyed to preserve the balance of nature. Getting rewarded for necessary killing is just good and natural. Any feedback is appreciated. If got a color or morality of faction wrong please tell me. If any these faction interest you feel free to use them in your game.

This is fun! I've been using color for my D&D Eberron campaign, that's focusing heavy on church of Silver Flame as a very White / Black flavored oppressive theocracy, the Orien guild in a White/Red/Green, and the orc tribes in the Whispering Woods as a Red / Green gruul flavor.. battling a Dal Qor demon cult primarily Blue / Back themed. (I know a lot of folks have no idea what any of these are. :P ) I think outside MTG, eberron in Dungeons and Dragons is the most ripe for implementing color themes because there's so much contrast in ideology within that world.

Currently doing that, actually! I've made for the world I'm homebrewing five 3 color factions, using a mix of wedges and shards, focusing on 2 colors out of the 3, with an outsider sort of helping. Sounds Iike wedges, but no, as the colors in focus may be enemy colors. I also found some symmetry in things, all 5 colors are represented 3 times only, all 5 colors are the outsider once, and the 5 focus pairs represent each color twice. The Torand Militia, a White-Blue-Black country ruling authoritarian military force focused on progress at all costs. The main pair being White-Blue, with Black as the outsider. Future focused innovative arcane inventors working for the future of society, but also driven and ruthless military officials that hunt divine and druidic magic. The Delupi Mob, a White-Black-Red large criminal organization with certain boundaries in what they'll do and do not. Main pair White-Black, with Red as the outsider. Criminals with limits and oath sworn to the very hierarchical organization, people who see real community in it, but also simple criminals who all they want is to be free and feel alive. The Sundial Gathering, a White-Blue-Green conservatory of star gazing wizards, librarians and sages. The main pair being Blue-Green, with White as the outsider. They seek knowledge first and foremost, finding it in nature and the skies, drawing inspiration from it, but also people who want to use said information to simply to help people and benefit all. The Iemyr Coalition, a Black-Red-Green band of pirates who...do what they want. The main pair being Black-Red, with Green as the outsider. They are out of themselves above all else, and revel in plundering and the chaos they cause, but they also have a deep respect for the ocean and find peace in sailing, being up in the food chain, and seizing their destiny. The Blazehart Circle, a Blue-Red-Green group of shamans who serve a council of elementals and dragons. The main pair being Red-Green and Blue as the outsider. They believe that life shouldn't be constrained by structures, that everyone should be free to do what they desire, and in that, there's harmony. But to achieve that, everyone has to work on themselves to perfection.

According to my little chart I've set up for faction creation... White: Protect/lift up the weak vs. Law+Order by any means Blue: Self-improvement vs. Knowledge at any cost Black: Self-motivation vs. Control/Oppression ie taking others down Red: Passion/Emotion vs. Chaos Green: Interdependent vs. Learned Helplessness of the status quo. It would be Law+Order, Chaos, Self-motivation, and Interdependence. My go-to for Law+Order with Chaos is usually the popular depiction of fae who twist your words into agreeing to contracts you didn't know you were even involved in talks for. "May I have your name?" John? Thanks, your name is mine now!" Black's self-motivation fits in here quite easily too. The tricky part is green but I think we can lean on the other part of green that is all about acceptance. If you somehow manage to outsmart them, well that's just the name of the game. GG and maybe we'll have another shot one day.

When I was young, I imagined a fun grouping would be Red White, but not as Boros. Instead, it was focused on standing in solidarity together and enjoying each other's comapny and living life together to the fullest. I even had a leader I called The Mountain King who had gathered outcasts and exiles to his hidden Mountain Hall to party and train together. I haven't thought of that forever, so I may revive the idea and other color combo philosophies I've come up with that I haven't seen in MtG.

The MtG crossover books all avoid talking about two things central the MtG. Planeswalkers and the colors of mana. You can intuit color associations for heroes, villains, and factions by looking at the Ravnica, Theros, or Strixhaven books, but there is no section on how the colors influence means, methodology, and motivation. The closest D&D has come to acknowledging the color pie is the last 6 or 7 pages of the Planeshift Ixalan PDF. They go into depth on the colors and provide ideals and personality traits for each color you could take in place of the ones your alignment and background give. If they ever actually dived into color pie philosophy in a D&D book the older edition players would throw a fit because all the new players would drop alignment in favor of the color pie.

i was thinking about factions the other day ; the specifics are what will prevent my white-blue-black groups from being shallow clones of Esper - so, i was thinking about five qualities for each color ; the qualities of white were religion, oppression, monasticism, evangelism, and community - the qualities of blue were transcendence, planning, invention, focus, and dissociation ~ the qualities of black were misanthropy, isolationism, cruelty, autonomy, and antisociality * each faction would have three of these qualities ; the transcendent, religious, and misanthropic faction was a church that wanted to unite with a sapient-hating universal consciousness by practicing mutual flagellation to wet the entity's appetite - the End-Callers believed their union with the universal consciousness would save them from oblivion because their saints, prophets, and priests had told them it would ~ some factions were all white, all blue, or all black, while others ended up being Orzhov-like, Dimir-ish, or Azorius-esque, and some were kinda-Esper *

I think one of my factions is Evil Green/Good Red: The wood elven tribes of Farnmont have come under the rule of Corvain, a human kingdom which now exploits the forest that the wood elves depend on. Though many wood elves, especially the elders who still remember the war, want to make a deal with the humans, some want to take matter into their own hands. The Scoia'tael, consisting mostly of the angry youth of the tribes, have begun sabotaging the forestry and disrupting any travelers through the woods. Their strikes are fast and devastating, before they retreat into the safety of the forest. The reasoning for Evil Green is that they are a faction that sees the humans use of the forest as exploiting, and would rather have the humans out. Yet their cause is a valid one, since they depend on the forest to live, making it an act of rebellion against an oppressive force, which make up the Good Red part. What do you think? Am I wrong with the colors or do you have something else to add to this faction?

@c.d.dailey8013

I think meritocracy would fit black the best. Meritocracy is a system where the ones performing the best get to rise through the ranks and become leaders. The result is a fierce competition to get on top. What comes to my mind is the intense work and school environments of certain Asian countries, like Japan and Korea. In this situation, black would thrive the best. Black is a more individualistic and competitive color. So it would fit in with the competitions that results from meritocracy. Black is cynical and so most in tune with harsh realities of the world. They would find the most comfort in cases where unchecked meritocrscy gets harsh and intense. Black has strong ambition. That is good motivation to compete hard to stay on top. Finally black has no ties with social rules. This may seem evil at first, but this is a benefit in this situation. There are no social ties to a ruling class, like a monarchy or oligorchy. There are no ties to fellow citizens like a democracy. There isn't even a strong tie to the divine, like a theocracy. Instead everyone works hard to be the best, and the best get to be in charge. Black will get into this way of being easily due to its detached nature. Blue may or may not fit in meritocrscy. It is an ally of black. It depends on how competitive a blue faction is. Both colors can go together in Dimir. Maybe certain Asian schools are real world groups that fit Dimir. Students study with an intense rigorous schedule. They compete over who gets the best grades. Whoever performs the best gets into good colleges leading to good jobs.

One aspect in which black can be good is a sense of personal agency and responsibility. Say a bad green can believe that there is no reason to fight evil because it's just as much a natural part of the world. A good black on the other hand might believe that whenever you had options and made a particular choice, you are responsible for it. If you stood on the side and failed to act, you are complicit even if you weren't formally obligated to act.
