The biggest mistake I made was going shopping with a friend every Saturday and buying all the pretty paper crafting supplies I saw and loved without any thought about how I was going to use them. Now I only buy things with a specific project in mind. My goal is to use up what is left over to make smaller projects before I start a new one. Another big mistake I made was beginning a new project before I finished the first one! 😂

Great tips Lisa!! I do this too, always have a plan for the new things I'm buying. I also don't have unfinished projects, they actually hurt my heart, the idea of something left half done really bothers me so I always finish what I start even if it's not working out the way I want it to.

It the first thing I do whenever I feel overwhelmed by the number of supplies I have. If I'm running out of space or containers are feeling too full for me. There are so many pretty new supplies to get though, so the temptation is always there.

And I SO agree about up-cycled boxes! I can’t relate when people act like it can be a tacky, mismatched, poor & ugly system, and you’ll follow through with it perfectly. I heard years ago, something that has stuck w/me ever since: if you don’t love & can’t respect your system, you will not consistently utilize it!

I'm so glad you shared this here, I did think for a bit there I was alone in this. You hear in so many places that recycled containers are the only way, but I just know myself too well and if it's pretty I'm much more likely to be consistent with using it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 🌸

I think it's really important to recognize how you work so your space can be set up to facilitate your flow. I tried plastic pull out drawer units that I stored embellishments by color only to learn that I'd rather have all my like items together ie: enamel dots, flowers. If I have an abundance of an embellishment like ribbon then I have it sub organized by color in large ziploc bags tossed into a fabric bin. So far this has been working for me. I have some fabric and wire bins that fit perfectly in my upper cabinets and they hold my dimensional sticker collection ie Jolee's, etc which I have organized by theme and season. Items I rarely use such as old school rub on's and metal embellishments I have those in bins as well that I prefer to just dig thru to see what I find. I'm almost to the point of letting go of some of these older embellishments as I'm just not excited by them. Never be afraid to change your system even if you've spent money on containers. An organized scrapbook room that supports your creative endeavors vs hindering them is worth a little misspent money if you have to let go of the containers that are not serving you. I've swapped out containers from other parts of my home and I've given some to my daughter in law - so no money was wasted :) Thank you for sharing your tips and insights with us! I truly appreciate your time and expertise you put into your videos :)

"You don't have to sell a kidney either" 🤣 I leave all of my supplies in their original packaging. I Just cut the top off and access that way. I also got two large filing cabinets. One I have hanging files in and all of my paper. The other (wide one) filing cabinet has fridge bins with my stamp sets. Originally I had all of this stuff on a table and the messiness was driving my nuts. As for most used dies, they went onto a magnet board that is on the wall. It's not pretty, but I work in the 'pit of despair' anyway. 🤣 I agree with your tips...I would go 'pretty', but that's not going to happen unless my husband decides to finish the basement.

My craft room is very organized but it’s not micro organized. I have to see what I have to be able to use it. I did look high and low for some organizational solutions. But I have the perfect set up for me. I tried buying containers. That didn’t work. I made the mistake of buying them ahead of time anticipating their use. They were never the right size. Now when I feel I need a container I take the item with me to the store and try it in the containers first before I buy. My biggest problem was blending brushes. I have at least 2 for every Color of oxide ink and yes I have them all. I looked through everything I could think of. For a year this has been driving me mad! Then one night scrolling through an online store looking for a specific clip to hang them on and being very disappointed cause there was none. I came upon cable clips that hold cables in place. Light bulb. Woohooo I bought 200 of em. Stuck em straight to the wall behind my door. All my brushes are in beautiful neat rows all in order. Phew I am now done. But thank you for your ideas and tips and for giving people ideas about organizing their space.

@CreatedByGwen
@CreatedByGwen 5 ай бұрын
Thanks so much Leslie. I wholeheartedly agree, the less space you have to store your supplies the more important it is to only have what you love. The 'container' determines how much you can keep. Some of us have a whole room as our 'container' and others don't. I personally really love these carts amzn.to/4bfBCmI because you can store them somewhere and then pull them out when you want to create - perfect for anyone crafting on a kitchen table for example. I would also recommend you purchase supplies in collections so that you can focus on the co-ordinating supplies only and that you choose collections that fit any occasion, so general themed supplies. Any tool needs to be multifunctional and so too do the actual supplies you're using. Also, watch for duplicates, if you have a very limited amount of space it's hard to keep duplicates of anything. I hope these helped! xo

There are no mistakes. Everyone functions a bit different, so you have organize things as it works for you and in the order it works for you. Some people like to get the difficult things out of the way, others like to wait and do the easy stuff first. You can organize your way out of clutter. That is what organizing does. Having too much of something isn't clutter if it's put away. For some, 5 minutes isn't enough time to do anything except open the door and turn on the light.

You can organise your way out of clutter, it’s true, and I do this all the time. But there comes a time, if you don’t regularly de-stash, that you run out of physical space. Also I think the point Gwen was trying to make is that it’s easier to tidy things away as you go than letting things pile up - so 5 minutes here, 10 minutes there, whatever it takes. I constantly have the issue that I dump things on my desk when I don’t have a place for them and then run out of working space, so then can’t have fun creating because there is no clutter free space. If I kept on top of things I would have so much more fun.
@CreatedByGwen
@CreatedByGwen 5 ай бұрын
Hey lovely, That is exactly what I was saying in regards to both the 5 minutes matters tip and the 'organising your way out of clutter' comment. Eventually things HAVE to go unless you're ok with them taking over the entire house, and then what? I'd personally MUCH RATHER do it in 5 minutes bursts 😬 You could have the "perfect storage/organisation system" (not that it exists, hypothetically) but if you have too many things even that won't work. @@plan4life

@@CreatedByGwen Hi Gwen, I agree with you wholeheartedly!!! I’m a naturally organized person and I’ve always automatically put things back where they belong. I’ve always found organizing super easy, but I also know there’s a point at which you either have to STOP BUYING or CULL OUT your supplies to make space. Just a plain fact of life if you actually want to “live” in your space. 🤣😂🤣

Just found you! Great video with very straightforward, sensible tips! One that i will be sure to rewatch! (I just subscribed too!) I dont have a lot of money or a dedicated room so as far as "up cycling" boxes and things like that, i actually find its pretty useful, especially in the declutter stages, to use them temporarily. 🥰 It lets me see how much room i have for certain things, play around with different ways to store items and see what i like best before i go out and spend money on something that may not work for me or my space. I am definitely all about function over "pretty" lol but i would LOVE to have all matching (or at least all clear!) containers 😋💕 Again, great tips and so excited to find you!! Wonderful video;) I agree with ALL that you discussed. Some of the learning that happened for me was buying multiple standard rectangle dies when I first started. I didn’t plan again and it became a seek and purchase to grow the availability of dies versus looking for a variety of rectangle styles. Sometimes I inadvertently buy duplicates. What can I say? I have a specific taste. Now I catalog all my products and check first. Occasional impulse buys happen, but not as much. Happy crafting everyone;)

I'm fairly new to crafting, but have collected a variety of supplies that are currently stored in boxes out in the shed. My plan this year is to sort out the office cupboard space and bring what I use inside to make it more accessible. I know there is a lot of junk out there that needs to go, but needing something to store my pens, ink and paints other than just chucking them all into a huge plastic tub..

Thank you so very much for your tips Gwen. My craft room is a work in progress. It is only a very small room so I am very limited to what I will be able to do. At the moment I have some Cube Shelving and a cute little cupboard from IKEA. It is the perfect little cupboard for storing my die cutting machine and other tools. I think it was really designed as a child’s cupboard but it is the perfect size for me to slip into the space I have. I actually have a very limited supply of card stock and I had been keeping every little scrap of card but this was making things look very untidy so a few weeks ago I got in an cleaned and sorted all the little scraps and just kept all the best pieces for die cutting. I just placed them all in a clear 12 x 12 clear container and I also got another just for some full sheets. I cannot work in my craft room yet as I have no desk and the light in there only works when it feels like it and the natural lighting is very poor in that room but I just have to make do. Our youngest son has made the other spare room in our house a room for his train models. I appreciate your tips as I do become overwhelmed trying to get a craft room organised. 🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️

I'm like you, I have very limited card stock, I see no point in keeping too much of it seeing it's so easy to come by. I’m new to your channel and my organization of my craft supply are on shelves. I have a shelf unit in the kitchen that I am in the process of reorganizing. Later on I plan on putting a tall shelf unit in my bedroom for more craft supplies that are in boxes and bins right now. I don’t have an extra room so my storage space is limited. I loved your video on 11 mistakes. It was very helpful and useful. Thanks for sharing. Hugs

It took me SO long to let go of the idea of colourful storage; now I go for translucent or opaque white bins, binders, etc and my neurodivergent brain thanks me for that. Now it can tune out the storage to background, and the colourful pretty things are what's inside. :). Great set of tips! idk how much 12x12 inch paper there still is, but there's certainly a lot of storage options like Iris brand clamshell project bins. I tried those kinds of storage for years and finally realised the 12x12 was just too big. Now everything for the most part is letter size or smaller, and it all actually gets used, looked through, and otherwise enjoyed. :)
@CreatedByGwen

I was the same, the colourful storage looks so pretty but it's not always the best option that's for sure. There is still a bunch of 12 x 12 paper available as many people still use that format (including me) - I get what you mean when you say that format is big. So glad you found this video helpful. 💗 💗 💗

Lots of great tips! I’m right now packing up my craft room for a move and some of the tips are helpful now (as I purge stuff that won’t make the trip) and in thinking of how to organize in our new home. Glad I just discovered you! Btw, what is the brand of shelf insert you have that the pink tabbed boxes slide into? I don’t think I’ve seen that before and love it!

@CreatedByGwen
@CreatedByGwen 5 ай бұрын
Hey JoJo 🌸 I wish I could post photos here to show you, but think of the space within the container as 100% if it's totally full. You want to fill it to say max 80% full. Don't try to fit as many things as possibly into the container as if you were playing Tetris but allow each item space. This makes things so so much easier to find and also put away. I hope that helps. As for Timeless collections, I'd go for something like these: shrsl.com/4ervi or shrsl.com/4ervn or this one which is a new one I'm planning on buying: shrsl.com/4ervq These all have general sentiments that could be used for a number of different occassions.

Almost all of my storage is made from upcycled material. I’ve saved a ton of cash and make them pretty by covering them in red duck tape for consistency. I also store things in their original packaging and don’t buy special sleeves. Again, saving a ton of cash.

I have to keep my hobby room a bit organised as I share the space with my husband. Organising and decluttering is essential with my limited space but it seems I spend more time organising than crafting! And just when I get it to a level of manageability I suddenly see second hand supplies online that I don’t already have but I need immediately 😅 and the whole process starts again. I just recently bought a haul of paper scraps and stickers and it’s taken me days to sort out. The last time it was beads and that took me weeks lol 😂 Where does the madness ever end?
@CreatedByGwen

The thing they love about it is that it's not just a book or course you read through, but a daily action guide to show you EXACTLY what you need to do each day to work towards having a decluttered space. You can learn more about it here: createdbygwen.com.au/create-a-clutter-free-craft-room/ It comes with a private facebook group where you can directly ask me questions (every day if you want) and get advice and the gals in there are super supportive of each other because they are all working towards that same goal. 💗

I struggled with this for so long, it used to drive me nuts too!! I actually had the cabinet made by a local cabinet maker. I gave him the box and asked him to make something up for me.
