My M1 Air died in Dec 2022. It was 21 months old. It was not responding to any keys or trackpad. My local Apple store tried a new trackpad and connecting cable. They also tried replacing the complete topdeck keyboard etc. No success. They finally fixed it by replacing the complete logic board and touch ID button. They charged me £429 U.K. ( a discounted rate) They said that it only had a 12 month warranty. I purchased it online from an Apple Authorised Seller (Currys/PC World) in the UK. My Apple Store that they would have honoured the repair cost up to 24 months if it had been purchased direct from Apple, even though they also only sell with a 12 month warranty officially. It's working fine again but it was a disappointing introduction to Apple build quality. It is my first Apple product. My previous cheap Chinese PC laptop was still working perfectly with not even a loose key when I bought this M1 Air.

I’m sorry this happened to you, really sucks. But let me tell you something: all purchases in the EU carry a 3 YEAR WARRANTY from the seller (not the brand! The seller). Obvious exceptions apply: food, clothes and consumable parts like batteries and car tires. I haven’t been in the UK since Brexit but I remember them having 5 YEAR warranty from the seller! So, if you had contacted the seller of your computer directly instead of Apple, and if had mentioned a “Warranty claim under Consumer Law”, you probably would’ve gotten a free computer or repair. The more you know!

I'm cheap, so I got the base M1 Air (8GB/256GB) on sale. I've had it for well over a year, and no problems at all. The 8GB has not been a problem. I use it for email, spreadsheets, web browsing, note taking, and web development. I don't use it for video editing or anything like that. The main limitation I've noticed is that it might start to slow down if you have a large number of browser tabs open, say thirty. That's not a problem for me, because I don't like having lots of tabs open because it becomes cumbersome keeping track of them. The 256GB has not been a limitation at all. I have all the software I want loaded on there (and then some), including Xcode, Android Studio, Visual Studio, Visual Studio Code, Node, and IDLE, and still have lots of room. The story would probably be different if I had lots of video files and photos.

Base model M1 MBA user here, after being paranoid about this memory swap issue I did some investigating: My SSD usage so far: 168.9 TB written (91% health on DriveDx, no noticeable issues YET) I asked a few friends to check their usage, all M1 MBA users too. Very surprising results across the board. Their usage so far: 1. 145.3 TB written, 91% health 2. 95.4 TB written, 94% health 3. 121.5 TB written, 95% health Software updates have indeed fixed this issue, or at least made it a whole lot easier on the SSD. Between myself and the others, we all used Google Chrome/FireFox. I have since switched to Safari a few months ago and my usage has only gone up +-100gb. Chrome was definitely the reason for almost 170TB in my case! Hoping to still get a good few years out of this machine, I have seen a Twitter user with more than 600 TB written without any issues, but the paranoia remains...

This is actually due to browser caching. All of the multimedia content you watched on Chrome (so every KZbin video) was being written to your SSD. Firefox too. Combined with all the other miscellaneous writes it can add up. Safari doesn’t cache to the SSD which is why it stopped. This caching decreased significantly however with software updates. Regardless, these 256GB SSDs have no problem doing over 500 TBW with ease in many situations. I wouldn’t be worried at all.

I just looked into my old mini's DIY Fusion drive's ssd, which failed. I ran High Sierra, ssd was X400 128GB, which has TBW of 72. SMART tells that real NAND writes were 111TB! (Actual data writes were 63TB, so there's quite much internal writing to keep bits "fresh".) The ssd was powered on little less than 10k hours. Mini has 16GB of RAM and I used it about 2-3 years with nothing extreme, probably the most RAM hungry was Chrome, which I usually end up having over 100 tabs, before I save all tabs to Session Buddy and start again with just few tabs. 9.9k hours with 111TB makes average of 11.4GB PER HOUR as AVERAGE! (But just 3.2Mbit/s for comparison.) MacOS has swapped like crazy for a long time and I do hate to use soldered storage. To conclusion, escpecially now that you can DIY all external Fusion drives (as a system drive) in APFS with desktop macs, it is wise to have a big ssd side. Not for speed, but for longevity.

Sorry, but you mention RAM several times, when to my understanding M1 Macs use "unified memory". More than just an Apple marketing term, it seems the unified memory in Apple silicon's Mac ARM architecture is built differently than traditional RAM, which is why 8GB of it on a MBP may - at least on certain tasks - outperform even 32 of RAM on an intel Macs. (PS- To be clear, I'm certainly no expert, and make this comment as a mere consumer, from what I've read, and from my experience with my M1 MacBook Pro...)

Had my m1 MBA for little over a year now and never had even half a problem, got it with everything base except 16gb of ram instead of 8. Used it for Web coding, photo editing, illustration, 3d modelling in rhino and now I'd be curious to test it on small or medium/high quality renders to see what it can do. Since I have a built pc at home I didn't need a higher end laptop but a portable and pretty powerful one and this is the best choice I could take. So yea I'd like to switch to a 14 pro bit just for the design, not regretting anything (except the excessively sharp edges smh)

Hello, do you think the 8GB would run smoothly for web coding, illustrator, photoshop?
@antoniovanci1024
@antoniovanci1024 Жыл бұрын
@@lukasalan8682 I'm my opinion yes. If with web coding you mean like html/css (idk javascript since I never used it yet) not a problem, these systems use very cleverly the memory they got. For illustrator and photoshop I can say it never gave me problems, especially photoshop which I've always known to be heavier than illustrator. For the price I really don't know if there is anything better even with the quality of materials and portability. Highly recommend. Edit: I'd obviously recommend to have at least a more pumped up version, like 16gb ram and 512gb of storage, first one for performance and the second one because it's better have more memory if you don't want to always bring an external ssd with you (I have an extrernal 500gb ssd since I always carry the laptop with me in the backpack with everything).

With the killer USB C hubs. I owned a 2018 HP Envy x360 and used a Dell USB-C monitor which supported 65w charging at the same time. Super convenient. Used for months with no issue then one day the usb c port died, i unplugged and kept trying and then bang, a loud click noise and the computer was dead, didn’t respond to power, charger nothing. I think the monitor fried the motherboard but I never expected this as i thought there would be some failsafe. I still use a 2021 HP spectre x360 with no issue with the monitor but my replacement 2018 HP Envy x360 USB C port recently died with the monitor again, I am not plugging the monitor in again because I am scared it will fry the laptop, but something tells me it’s either a faulty failsafe on those model of computers or something is wrong with the wattage of the dell monitor. Note: I only recommend official USB C accessories, meaning if you have a HP laptop, buy the HP hubs and accessories, sure others will work but many are not to the same standard as the official OEM products. Same with Apple computers

I question this review and comments. There’s something not right. I had an Apple Mac for 8 years without issue. I had the M1 3 months before the screen damaged from non-existent pressure. I had the M1 Air, but I actually did a bold move by jumping ship to Windows. I bought a Lenovo Yoga 7 Slim Pro X for 1200 USD; - 14.5" IPS display - 16GB RAM - 512GB SSD Storage - 2x USB, 2x USB-C, Headphone jack I've owned this laptop for over two months now, and even though the hardware is fantastic, it's not as seamless as using MacBook Air, since it used to synchronize notes, but now I have to use Google Docs in two separate lists.

The Macbook Airs with the M chips are nothing but tablets with attached keyboards now. Soldered RAM and SSD, two USB-C ports and that's it. As soon as you're out of warranty you're screwed, as the thing is irreparable and the only solution for anything is to swap the whole logic board. I have a Dell laptop and if I ever have the need for Mac Os I'd just buy a Mac mini.

Some people think it’s terrible to have any swap memory, but contrary to popular belief, swap memory is not just for when you run out of ram, it’s also used by programs for data that they want to persist through crashes, unexpected shutdowns, etc.. Because of this, some programs will refuse to run if swap memory is not configured. You’re unlikely to ever encounter that scenario unless you A: Manually disabled swap on Mac or Windows, or B: Are running a Linux disto that happens to not have swap enabled by default. Swap has existed well before the SSDs we know today. It’s certainly utilized more frequently as “extra ram” now that it’s stored on SSDs and not Hard Drives, but originally this “Swap-as-RAM”-esque feature was only used prevent systems from completely crashing, as it was so painfully slow. Better to be slow than lose all your work. 🙃

There is no need for me to upgrade to M2 yet or any time soon. I'll never get a Mac with just 8gb ram or 256/512gb of storage. I stopped drinking, smoking pot, using other drugs, hiring prostitutes & going to Starbucks so I was able to save up the money & buy the mac with the needed memory & storage. My school really f'ed me over by giving me an M1 MacBook with 115 gigs of storage and 8 gigs of ram. It's difficult to find a time when I'm not using at least half a gig of swap memory. It also doesn't help that I have less than 10 gigs of storage left thanks to the school's bloatware and MacOS' garbage storage management ("thank you so much for informing me that 50 gigs of spent storage is 'system data!' That definitely helped me in clearing out my storage!!!"). That's why I built my own PC with 16 gigs of ram, a 1 terabyte ssd, and a wicked fast cpu and gpu that my little M1 furnace couldn't dream of beating.
