A new commission piece is always exciting, but when Tavolino restaurant at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, asked for a 50-ft mural in their cafe & bar, I was beyond thrilled! Using iPad mockups for the client and Uni Posca markers to create the art, the project was a whirlwind, especially during the coronavirus outbreak. Watch to see how the piece, "3 Garbanzos," a 50' x 5' illustration showcasing the fun, food, and characters you might find at this fabulous restaurant, was created and some of the important steps along the way. Enjoy and thank you for watching! ~ Mark
GEAR USED:
• Faber Castell 2H pencil
• White Prismacolor Premiere colored pencil
• Black and white Uni Posca acrylic paint markers (2mm, 8mm, and 15mm)
• Blick acrylic paints (assorted colors)
• General gum eraser
• #6 and #12 Princeton Summit 6100B "Bright" acrylic brushes
• #10 and #12 Simply Simmons round acrylic brushes
• Tavolino's Margherita pizza with jalapénos
• other miscellaneous supplies

Special thanks to Lindsay "The Frugal Crafter" Weirich for prompting me to record the process of creating this mural. I may not have done so if it weren't for her encouragement. As always, thank you to everyone for all the kind words and generous support here and on social media throughout the process of this. It made the whole thing worthwhile! Cheers! ~ Mark

So amazing Mark! What an incredible project and execution. Your style feels so right for this setting too. I'm very uncomfortable tackling very large scale work and murals so I'm doubly in awe. Lindsay was right, this needed to be recorded. It was the most entertaining thing I've seen on KZbin in a while. Great job my friend!

Thank you so much, Steve! I'm thrilled you liked both the project and the video. Yeah, I'm glad Lindsay mentioned it, too. Because of the immersion into it, I wasn't sure I'd be able to capture video and properly edit it to show the process. As it was, I collected about 80GB of video for this one project, the bulk of which was cut and discarded. The video, alone, was a beast! lol!! Overall, this was an exciting project that I couldn't resist. The bonus was how great the people were that I met at the restaurant. Anyhow, I really appreciate your time with this one and hope all is going well with you and your family during these ccrraazzyy times! ~ Mark

@@MDCampbell I still have great difficulty with employing the left side of my brain, especially at 64. My wife has done everything analytical since we got together when I was 16. I pay no bills, taxes, money accounting or anything! She does it ALL! I once won $10,000 using my creativity and zaniness in a competition to garner attention for a radio station. I gave it ALL to her. In the 90's she would say "why do you have to be so weird" after the 10 grand she said "honey, you be as weird as you like"

I never miss any of your videos as you know, and I am so glad I didn’t miss this one especially. WOW, the creative process in live mode. I would love to go to this restaurant but I would have loved to just sit and watch you work through the whole mural. To be honest with you, I have had an artist do a mural on one of my walls. Here’s where I made the mistake. If I had it to do all over again, I would have canvased that wall so I could take it down if I ever moved and take it with me. I bet the owner will wish they did that as well. I love your work and stories Mark. I love to hear you express yourself. As always thanks for your time. Victoria
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 4 жыл бұрын
One of the most wild, wonderful experiences in this, Victoria, was the realization that people were watching while I worked. At first, it was very challenging and I was quite shy and tentative. But, once I got going and forgot they were there, it was kind of weird to draw for an hour or two, then turn around and see people just watching. They were extremely kind and complimentary, which was so great. As for the mural you had done, I totally understand that idea of canvasing the wall. Makes perfect sense. If any work comes from this project, that will most definitely be something I'll have to consider and/or offer. One man contacted me about doing something in his kid's room, but I'm not sure if he was serious or if it was just a whim. lol! Thank you so much for your kind words, as always. Stay well and I'm really happy you were able to catch this one, too! xo ~ Mark

@@AurorasArtWorld the newer Trek shows are definitely lacking the personality, charisma, and charm-quality of the older shows. If I had to live with any of them forever, it would be the original series and Next Generation, as they are just pure and really keep the positive aura of the sphere alive, even now; from DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise on, they're all darker and more serious, even in their humorous moments. The newest one's are _very_ dark and _very_ loud, which doesn't make me want to revisit them like I do with the others. What a great mural! I love how busy it is, and all the little bits and pieces waiting to be discovered. Regulars at the restaurant will be finding cool little details for years. :) Could you discuss the decision to include the USS Enterprise, which is a trademarked image? Were you and/or the restaurant owner concerned about that? Or is there some aspect of fair use that I'm missing that'd make it safe to include?

Thank you so much, Angie Penrose! I'm really happy you liked it! As for the ship, it's a fair use parody of the ship on the show. I drew it very differently from the copyrighted ship, so there's no worry. Now, if the entire mural had been Trek themed, with caricatures of the cast, logos, and such, that would be another story. :)

Hi Mark, how I missed your videos! Thanks for sharing this amazing project. The previews on Instagram did not justice to the whole piece, that you've shown in your video. This is lovely to see you having a chat with customers while creating. Thanks also for the insights on planning ahead and sketching digitally as well as the importance of a contract. This was an amazing video and I hope you'll get more opportunities like that! I have one question though: did you use acrylics for the accent colours? They are so nice and bright! Stay safe and healthy!

Hello my friend! Thank you so much for watching this one and for your generous and kind words. I appreciate your support more than you know! As for the paints, there was actually a little trickery involved. Because the space has very low level lighting, dark wood, and that dark green paint, I had to boost the colors of the paint by adding Titanium White to them. In natural light, they colors are bright and almost pastel, but in low level evening light, the colors pop brightly instead of looking heavy and drab in the dark ambience. Because the space is used in daytime and evening, it was a choice to enhance the colors by simply adding a bright white to the base colors. I hope that made sense. lol! I hope you and yours are all doing well and healthy, too! Cheers! ~ Mark

@@MDCampbell Thanks for your answer! Adding Titanium White was probably a great idea. First when I saw the orange it looked almost neon in your cup, but on the wall it was just gorgeous and fit so well with the mint green, light blue and pink. The dark green stripes seemed challenging indeed, but you've included them so well into your painting! I'm still impressed! You are an amazing and inspiring person! We're well so far and there are not many cases of corona in our little village, but everywhere around us. So far we try to help out little shops by sewing masks for them, because they could not get any. And just see, what we can do. The world is definitely changing now and present a challenge. So we try to adapt as everyone probably. ;) I hope your family is well too!

Love your characters ! Did you have to seal your mural?😊
@MDCampbell

Thank you so much! I did not seal the mural, as it was acrylic based and unless someone really scrubbed away at a part of it, the paint held up fine for the past few years. I saw no degradation, whatsoever.

Where did you get your brush/water bucket? I love it and it looks so useful.

Okay, Kim Horringa, don't be jello... I got it at Michael's craft store, on sale, for $5 bucks!!! Can you believe it? I saw it and grabbed it and even though I didn't need it, I knew it would come in handy at some point. I've only used it once since I bought it, but it was more to try it out. This project really put it to the test. On the bottom of two of the sections, it has grooves to help remove paint from the brushes. It was a really lucky find! (if you're interested, I showed it in this video about art supplies: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXO0naF3aJigaNk ). Thank you for checking this one out and I hope you're doing okay through all of this virus stuff. Cheers! ~ Mark

Was there any discussion about priming and painting white over the green stripe to give you an easier canvas to work with?
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 4 жыл бұрын
That was one of the first things we discussed, Rio Illustrates. They were willing to repaint, but it would have taken at least two coats of primer, maybe three, to cover that green stripe. I suggested we leave it and I could work _with_ the green stripe, which is when I showed them a mockup on the iPad. That was the real game changer - being able to lay out a mockup, on the fly and on the spot, and not having to go home and try to explain it later via email. Thank you for asking such a great question! I hope you are doing well during this whole situation! Cheers ~ Mark

Looks amazing! How do you deal with mistakes with the Posca markers?
@MDCampbell
@MDCampbell 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much, Nicholas Johnson! I really appreciate your thoughts. As for mistakes, well, I just try to plan ahead. When too much paint comes out, I keep a damp sponge or paper towels nearby to catch it while it's wet. If I make a mistake, I try to either work it into the piece or paint over it, if I can. Sometimes, mistakes happen and they just have to exist, despite all. But, again, that's why I try to plan things out in advance. I love Posca markers, but they can cause a lot of stress due to unpredictable conditions. Rare, but it happens. Cheers! ~ Mark

Great work! Is the posca marker water resistant on the wall?
@MDCampbell

The Posca markers are not water resistant. Fortunately, it hasn't been an issue for this mural. However, if someone decided to wash the walls, it might be a problem! lol! Thank you for watching this one. I am grateful for your time! ~ Mark

Thank you for checking this one out! I believe I was using Procreate, but I also use Sketchbook Ink, which is no longer available, as well as Art Rage, and Adobe Photoshop for iPad.
