I feel like they're doing something similar to what Zappa did with his discography. He was also very prolific and utilized an idea that he called "conceptual continuity", in which he would re-interpret melodies into new songs, reference lyrics from other songs in new songs, etc..

It's not just about themes though it's also so that the songs can bleed together. At Desert Daze '18 they played an 80-minute set that only had like 3 pauses for applause. That set had a perfect use of this concept because it opened with Mind Fuzz > Balrog and the last sequence of the set was River > Nonagon > Lord of Lightning > Cellophane > Altered Beast, all seamless transitions. They basically sliced Mind Fuzz and Lord of Lightning open and surgically implanted their entire discography inside. Idk this sort of things makes a lot of sense when you're high.

nah the gizzverse isn't a set universe its a bit more like a mythos with allusions to other things as well as it's self like Lovecraft

Some context is just that: some context of the chronology of the gizzverse, using the riff at the END of people vultures to tell you, that this portion of nonagon infinity will also connect to The Lord of Lightning vs the Balrog. Nonagon is an infinite loop but I’m convinced it can loop into other albums and people vultures into the lord of lightning is the most obvious.
@jackprezo3 жыл бұрын
17:07 they also share a lot of the same musical nuances (also the flute riff from 'trapdoor' from pmdb appears on the end of 'the balrog') and the three album covers are based on each other too. Also your comments on poly fitting in here too, crumbling castle was actually originally a part of motu i believe but they cut it. There's a behind the scenes vid somewhere showing that tune on the list with the others. Great vid by the way, appreciate your efforts. Keep at it mate!

Also, people like to consider the robot in Fishing for Fishies to be Han-tyumi. They also used the voice of Han-tyumi in Sketches and refer to it as a God. Also with Crumbling Castle, the thick, green water could easily be Han-tyumi's vomit. There's lots of references and overt connections but I agree that it's all loose on purpose. The Gizzverse itself is basically their albums but instead of planning the whole thing, they try to link things together as they go and make it feel connected while letting everything be abstract and malleable. I wouldn't consider the gizzverse a true narrative, it's basically just a name for their like 7 or 8 albums in their discography.

Good video, though I want to clarify one thing. You stated that the band started to experiment with odd time signatures with "Quarters!" (14:15). Although it's one of the most audible examples, their first attempts at odd signatures trace back as early as in 2013. The title track from "Float Along..." is, in fact, in 5/8. So I think it's safe to assume that they started to experiment with rhythm shortly after garage psych phase.

Salut, This helped a lot, as I only bumped into The Gizz just last week. I met with the epic, "Rattlesnake".... my very first track.I wandered in lost and hungry, but almost immediately, I had become skeptical of the power this shiny beast held; a thus unheard monstrous band, composed of untold layers of complexity. What I spied and subsequently encountered was well beyond me, so I sought for a roadmap before furthering the immersion; and here we are.... This is the point where I shall offer my special Thanks! Cheers!

@KaneMidge3 жыл бұрын
Teenage Gizzard was on Spotify for about a month and then the band took it down. They haven’t said why but I think it was because the songs were pretty bad quality, like it was ripped straight off KZbin or something. Also, King Gizz’s releases on Spotify are a bit different from country to country, licensing issues probably.
