Got this plant from a nursery in Winter 2010, and just had the time and the right moment to work on it. This party 1 introduces the plant and the first prunings of it. There were some major cuttings. (and of course I saved the cuttings to see if they would root and propagate).

My research into the matter indicates that a good bonsai soil consists of some basic elements. 1.) A good potting soil to help with water retention and nutrients. 2.) Some sort of small sharply angled but lightweight rocks to encourage root splitting and help with drainage. It should be light so as not to settle to the bottom of the pot. 3.) Builders sand for substance and drainage. 4.) A organic element such as smallish wood mulch to add an organic component as well as aid with water retention

Another important reason is to encourage root splitting as well as achieving proper drainage, retaining nutrients and other factors that escape me at present. Soil mixes vary from region to region ad well as from species to species. (continued)

Again, I am a beginner and in no way an authority on this matter. I have yet to experiment with different soil mixes as I won't be doing any repotting till early spring. I've seen a couple of videos on KZbin about the subject. Perhaps a search would put you in contact with people far wiser on the subject than I.

Replying to your soil question while watching this video if you don't mind. In reading my answer keep in mind that I am a beginner in the hobby. Bonsai soil is meant to replicate the conditions that the tree would grow in in nature. Since no adult tree grows solely in potting soil in nature, bonsai artists mix soil to reflect that reality.
