This was one of my favourite videos of yours. I can only imagine where you'd be today if you hadn’t passed. I hope to visit this beautiful store one day, too, if it's still open. Thank you for inspiring us. RIP.

Balled and burlapped stock ALWAYS has a heavy clay rootball - these are typically plants that are field-grown and the heavy soil is preferred to keep the rootball intact during harvesting and transport, however it is not good for the plant's root health and oxygenation.
@argosaha93186 ай бұрын
The toot bulb seems to be a hard lump of clay in burlap. You are supposed to break the clay lump and expose the roots as dense hardened clay wont allow water and nutrients to reach the root bulb. I would have broken the hardened clay root bulb as much as possible before planting, take out 33 to 50% of the clay and expose the roots. Clay lump was not the growing medium of the plant. It was added to bare roots to keep it moist during the shelf life at the store. (Bad practice)

Is this tree still alive? It would be cool to see it a decade later.

Looks more like the soil is too rich rather than overwatering. Rose of Sharon can tolerate poor soil conditions like clay and there’s no need to even fertilize it’s just does it’s thing naturally. Good luck and thank you for this video I’m considering trying a rose of Sharon bonsai

Azales need acid soil. How do I know? My first job was working at a plant nursery. Acid soil all the way and concentrating on 3 plants only. Azalea, Camellia and rhododendron.🌺

My Ficus Benjamin also had (1) yellowing leaves (2) leaves then turned brown, curled, crispy (3) then leaves fell off I do not have a "green thumb" - logically, I thought "NOT GETTING ENOUGH WATER!" Aha - the 'bubbler' sprinkler at the base of the Ficus tree was not emitting ANY water. The tree is growing (on purpose) through the concrete slab foundation next to a sliding glass door and there's a small garden outside the sliding door with its own sprinkler head (prior owner of the house did all that). The sprinklers come on at 4am. I didn't have any chance to detect the 'no water' for the tree. "The Ficus is dead!" I found the outside sprinkler spraying a FOUNTAIN of water, stealing all water pressure from the Ficus tree's bubbler. I fixed the outside sprinkler. Then the bubbler had its water pressure restored. AFTER 4 MINUTES of the bubbler being on, THERE WAS A *_SMALL POND_* OF WATER at the base of the Ficus. So because the Ficus growing through the foundation hole shares the SAME DIRT GROUND as the garden, that broken outside sprinkler FLOODED THE GROUND. The "brown, very dry, curling up and falling off" leaves symptom of the Ficus was due to TOO MUCH WATER. The person who designed the Ficus tree to exhibit 'extreme dryness' when there's too much water NEEDS TO BE FIRED I stopped all watering for the Ficus bubbler and garden sprinkler. The Ficus tree is REVIVING. .

I don't know your name, and I never knew you, which is a G-D shame, because I think you lived less than 30 minutes from me, but I want you to know that I enjoyed sharing your experiences with your trees, and they made me want to share my experiences with others. Thank you. If your family ever checks these comments, I want them to know that I thought the Bonsai Student was a cool dude.

It is %100 a “Shishigashira” Japanese maple. I have several Shishigashira maple bonsai in my collection. Trust me, it is definitely not a cascade Acer japonicus!! It is a Acer palmatum “Shishigashira” or a “lion’s head” maple

We have a lions head maple. Planted it 20 years ago. Just trimmed it because it got too tall. Can’t find anyone who wants the trimmings for bonsai , or to grow trees. I’m willing to give them away but nobody around here knows how to use them. Beautiful tree.

@@Hank139crazy that u can’t find any takers for the cuttings! Shishigashira maples aren’t the most common maples and are very desirable, especially for bonsai. They have tiny leaves, even smaller internodes and stunning fall colors!! Put the cuttings in a mix of 80% perlite and 20% compost. Then put in an area that ONLY gets indirect sunlight. If possible put in a big tub and put a clear lid over it, greenhouse like atmosphere is the goal….. once rooted, u could easily sell them off as “pre bonsai” material to the right people. If u live in western Washington state, I would love to take em all off ur hands. But I would also be happy to help give advice as how to grow em on…… the bonsai world needs more maple stock that AREN’T grafted.

I live in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and mine do better outside...went from a 30cm potplant to a 1,5meter tree within 3years. I think perhaps the cold kills it and not so much the sun.

I was about to throw out mine, but after seeing this I still have hope that it will come back, I cut everything dead down and left a bit of the stem and started watering it again, it's about as old as me (22yo) and I don't wanna get rid of it. Fingers crossed:)
