I got exactly the same jar the other day. I left the tap in and made a desert type terrarium out of it with sand, some small branches, a root, iceland moss, botanicals and tall light wood sticks with some tillandsia on them. I left the jar open because the wood sticks out of it. It doesn´t need more humidity than a little bit of water sprayed on the tillandsia, so that´s no problem. I´m very new to the terrarium building game, so I kept it easy.

Is that canister filter actually needed? I dont think so. A small aquarium pump under the sponge would do the same trick. What lighting do you use for those vases?

Hold up a min...Did you say u added some spring tails?!? Do you mean those little tiny bugs that jump & are smaller than fleas/almost microscopic ?). If so,then idk if I'm very keen on making this if they are to be a ness.part of it,becuz I literally just finally after like 3mo.got rid of a small infestation that was getting in from 1 of the house's side doors b4 we replaced the nearby downspout siding & waterproofing.. Also,4 some reason ive seen a handful of them come & go every spring+summer for the past 3 yrs.where a handful or so have managed 2 get into our bathrooms from outside via the window sill...I just don't think I likethe idea of any more being introduced into my indoor ecosystem,lol..

I need to understand something....when is an ecosystem SUPPOSED to be sealed? I feel like I'm not even phrasing the question correctly, but I think that some of you that do this will know what I mean. I'm understanding terrariums, vivariums, paludariums more each day, but I don't understand the difference between when these things are supposed to be opened and serviced, and when something is supposed to be totally contained.

You can leave it opened or you could also keep it sealed but sometimes if there’s to much water in it you would need to open it so it could air out a little and then you can close it back up. But if you want a sealed terrarium it would need to have not to much water I think so it doesn’t get mold

Could you do this with a bit of a pool at the bottom of the jar and have a few tiny wee fish? Or will that not work. I'm just getting into terrarium and tanks and am doing as much research before I start.
