Ooh, that looks nice! Glad I could catch a video as it was posted, too. I often struggle to make pixel portraits, my faces tend to look a bit too harsh sometimes, so this is a nice way to make character faces in pixel art with a more traditional artistic base!
@romajimamulo3 жыл бұрын
I bet what they did was start with a high res drawing, shrunk it down, then cleaned it up. Normally you don't get anti aliased lines in pixel art that was made at low res

@@romajimamulo you should’ve taken it, many art books that the series put out does show the full resolution images of these portraits. The process continued even when the team worked on the Mega Man Star Force series. But it’s also interesting that some of them took more liberties in the clean up more than others.
@ultleo8393 жыл бұрын
I think that's what they did too, but you can just manually do the anti aliasing
@AlcorSalvador3 жыл бұрын
@@MidniteWv4 it's hard to find, but there are images of the machines they used for the pixel art. It had a camera to digitizing the image, a touch screen and "mouse" pen combo. Iirc, the machine also quantized the palette, but it was user adjustable. Had onion layer support and other goodies

I just googled, "pixel artist megaman battle network," and this came up. Already ranking in SEO! I'm making a MMBN-inspired game, and I want to be able to have the feeling from 4-6, so thanks for this video!

That tip to extend the canvas beyond the bounds blew my mind. I'm always wrestling with the outer areas, this is a really nice solution! And I always love seeing small pixel characters translated to a higher-res view or portrait like you did with Mel here, I think that's something really unique to pixel art because usually, you might just scale a 3D or 2D drawn character image to fit a portrait, but here you get to see a lower res and higher detail interpretation of the same character and it almost expands the world in a new way because my sub-conscious already had an idea of how they might look from the smaller piece and I get to see that come to life with the more detailed portrait you made here. Pixel magic at work haha!!! Amazing work Brandon!!!!
@BJGpixel3 жыл бұрын
Haha I know right, without extending the canvas it can be a bit constraining - kinda like bumping into a wall 😅 And thanks dude, I feel the same with portraits; it's nice to get a clearer look at the character design - it's like when there's character profiles in the instruction booklet also :D
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
@@BJGpixel I miss instruction booklets!!!! Maybe we need digital ones now
@BJGpixel3 жыл бұрын
@@saultoons I know! We went from booklets down to single sheet inserts with downloadable content on one side and an advertisement on the other - and now sometimes there's not even that 😅Digital ones are nice too; I like when there's a concept art gallery accessible from the game menu :D
@saultoons3 жыл бұрын
@@BJGpixel Yeah unlockable art and stuff seems to be pretty common and is a nice addition to games. Though it's not the same as getting excited looking at the instruction booklet or even reading about a game in a game magazine haha

Maaaan I love your channel! In my subjective opinion, the coolest pixel artists not only keep original ideas intact regarding what makes pixel art what it is, they also bring new things to the table. Your samurai pizza cats video is what got me hooked on your content. I loved how you kept the original NES feel intact while also not having to care for the exact graphical limitations that makes an NES game what it is. In the pixel art community, i often see either one extreme or the other. Your approach is a refreshing balance of the two! I'm looking forward to binging all your other videos lol Also making inbetween colors with a 50% opacity layer is like my bread and butter lmao, very happy to see someone very talented also uses this method!

Dude, this is amazing! It would be super sick to see how you would translate this character, and maybe some of your others from that isometric video into the style of the Pokemon Conquest portraits! When you select a pokemon in battle in that game, it sorta shows a really pixel-y image of that pokemon's trainer, which would be super cool to see in one of these videos!

That's cool! Can you try making one of these but Battle Network 5-6 style? In BN4 and the next sequels they started using a simpler style for the sprites due to BN3 having almost run out of memory during development(resulting in some things being cut from the final release).

I was always on the fence about the downscaled kind of look for pixel art. Making it seem as though a higher resolution picture was "simply" resized to fit a smaller canvas, feels like it defeats the purpose. Obviously a lot of work goes into making it look right, strategic placements of half-opacity pixels to smoothen the outlines, less overall contrast and more blending in between elements, etc. etc. But in the end it comes out less impressive to the naked eye, compared to, hm, a piece of pixel art with pretty much any other style. All in all, very much appreciate the video. It's interesting to see the workflow for these kinds of pieces. Keep it up! /
