Hi Jennifer, I just looked into those varnishes today as a possible replacement for my Gamvar satin varnish. However, I saw that the data sheet titled 'California Warning' on the website describes this varnish as a clear risk to health. It specifically mentions possible cancer causing ingredients. I asked Chat GPT to compare both brands' safety data sheets, and this is what it said. "The Gamvar Satin varnish, like the Natural Pigments Conservar Isolating Finishing Varnish, also comes with health and safety considerations. According to Gamblin’s Safety Data Sheet, Gamvar Satin contains petroleum distillates, which are classified as flammable and potentially harmful if ingested or inhaled in high amounts. However, Gamvar does not carry the same specific "California Proposition 65 Warning" as the Conservar varnish, which flags chemicals like ethylbenzene and benzene known to cause cancer and reproductive harm under California law. While Gamvar does still include petroleum distillates, it lacks many of the additional carcinogenic components found in the Conservar varnish. This makes Gamvar a generally safer option, though it’s still important to use it with good ventilation and take precautions to avoid prolonged skin or eye contact. If safety is a top priority for you, particularly due to the stricter health warnings on the Conservar varnish, Gamvar could be a preferable choice as it aligns more closely with lower-toxicity needs." I'm sharing this info incase it's of interest to you. I would wear a proper heavy duty face mask with filters and gloves while varnishing given the ingredients list.

14:37 - what about distilied water and some small cotton balls and you just wash it... you let it completely dry and then varnish it.

This is great advice. For some reason I never think of cleaning paintings that way until after they are varnished.

So far I’m really liking Rublev varnish. This article really helped me understand the different types and affects of varnishes. www.naturalpigments.com/artist-materials/selecting-varnishes-for-your-painting/

fun! It is cool seeing all your artwork layed out. Do you think you started doing brighter backgrounds after becoming more comfortable with your values on the darker ones?
@JenniferMariePainting3 жыл бұрын
Perhaps. Also I know I switched to brighter colors during the start of the pandemic because I wanted to more light and color in m studio to cheer me up.

Hello - when you have a moment could you please list the exact varnishes you purchased from Natural Pigments. I think one is Isolating Finishing Varnish but I didn't catch the second one. Thanks in advance! Cheers : )
How long do you have to wait to varnish? I would like to use conservar varnish but I wonder about the wait time. I only used gamvar and I don't wait that long to varnish it? Would be ok if I wait 2 months to varnish it since they said if the thickest areas of your painting are dry through you can still varnish it? how long do you usually wait?
@JenniferMariePainting3 жыл бұрын
I wait at least 6 months to varnish. 6 months is the minimum recommended time to wait. Though depending on how thinly or thickly you paint can change the time frame too. Here’s a short article that goes more in-depth. www.naturalpigments.com/artist-materials/wait-six-months-before-varnish/
