Hey guys. I wanted to do a 1 month update on this ecosystem, but I just couldn't. There is too much brown diatoms on the glass and this completely prevents filming the organisms inside. It's just impossible to film the ecosphere right now. I will upload an update on the ecosystem the moment the visibility improves.

This looks like a great idea as a project with my daughter when she is old enough. Kids should be given the chance to understand the world around them in macro and micro scales. She may not be interested or she may love it and show interest, see what happens.

I was saying to my wife yesterday these ecosystems can be created now for the grandkids and used for a science project. A pond and a forest floor ecosystem observed for a year or two will all but guarantee an 'A'! Grandkids being what they are, they'll lose interest after a week🤣🤣so, the jars will stay here and I'll take a picture of them once a week. Yea, I know....

We actually did this in my high school biology class and it was SO interesting. We did one bottle with stuff collected from a pond and one with just some tap water and a some storebought water plants and compared them after a few weeks to see how the microorganisms changed and maintained the systems. The tap water one was overflowing with algae! Very cool and I highly recommend you do it with your daughter :)

Shoot, start it now. Get a jar started ahead of time, and then have her make her own. She can watch the jars at different points in time. Go for the same date, maybe one on her birthday as a gift? It’ll be exciting for sure, especially if you’re coaxing her to gain a love of the environment. Also, several different magnifying glasses. She’s probably going to get easily entertained watching the little creatures going about their lives and maintaining the jars.

Totally agree. I also find it so amazing to think that this is how life on earth started! Small organisms in a contained ecosystem that eventually grew and evolved and moved from water to land to the sky and in some cases, back into the water.

I got a click beetle larva in one of my jars. I saw him in my shovel and deliberately placed him in the ecosystem to see what came out with the full intention of release. Well, then I did some research. Click beetle larva live in the ground for up to 5 years eating my crops at the roots. I don't use insecticides so if he crawls out as a mature beetle in my jar I will remove him and end him. Sucks, but there it is.

Originally just put in one little plant, but a whole bunch grew up over the past few months! Algae grew inside too! Been seeing a lot of copepods and vorticella colonies inside, as well as worms and more that I cant make out the details of. i made a couple of ecospheres in August. i live in the high desert so it was difficult to locally source any aquatic plants because the river is mostly rocky and sandy so i used plants from the store. As of now my ecospheres are thriving. The plants have new growth. there are multiple snails with different shaped shells, an abundance of copepods, ostracods, and a bunch of other micro organisms that i have yet to identify. There are tubifex worms and some planarians. my favorite creatures i think would have to be the hydras. they are so cool. i see them capture micro organisms often. i hope that i happen upon some vorticella for the next project.

@@mikaya4187 i used a couple of jars. i collected a bit of water, duckweed, and some algae from the river and pond in then scooped in some mud and little bit of pebbles. the jars were about half way full at this point. i collected water and duckweed in a few bottles to finish after i put in the plants. as i mentioned i had trouble finding any locally sourced plants so i bought some from the store. i set the plants in the mud in each jar then finished filling them up. i didn't put any sort of debris or decaying matter in either of them. just mud, pebbles, the plants, and water. at first i thought they looked too plain. the copepods and ostracods were the obvious creatures. then the plants started growing. tubifex worms emerged from the mud as well as snails that have been laying eggs and reproducing and a couple planarians which i occasionally see. the hydras appeared about a month or so later. had no idea i'd collected them. i did try to make an ecosphere in a big jar after i'd made these to with all kids of sticks and leaves and algea. i thought "hell yea, this is gonna be the best one." but there was too much going on and it decayed. sometimes less is more. hope this helps.

I had two jars go opaque due to algae. So when I made a third jar I put small magnets inside and out, allowing me to scrape the inside without opening the jar. For six months or so I kept a window clear that let me observe the activities by cleaning the window once a week. But I let it lapse and the algae got a grip on the inside magnet so now it won't move and the window has gotten cloudy. You can get sets of disk magnets for sticking notes to your refrigerator from Amazon for $10.00 or less depending on size. I used 12mm disks, they are flat so smaller ones might work better for smaller jars, and I stacked two on the inside and two on the outside for better holding power. Try them out on your jar with plain water to see how it works for you. Sorry I have not made any videos yet but this is an incredibly fun hobby. I kept the jar on a stand near my bed so I could check it out when I laid down at night.

Great video. Just wanted to let you know that the plant you collected is floating pennywort which is highly invasive and you may be breaking the law just keeping it, depending where you are, even if not intentionally. If you can find marsh pennywort, it's a native equivalent with nicer looking plant with smaller leaves.
@Jartopia3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your concern. I didn't bother looking into the plant species this time around, but you're completely right it is the invasive species Floating Pennywort. I have done my research and read it appears an offense to sell, distribute or release the species into the wild. I do not plan to do any of these things and will be keeping it inside a sealed jar with no chance of escape. People often keep invasive plant species within their aquariums without legal consequences and an ecosphere in my eyes is a much more secure aquarium. I will be extremely conscious not to spread this plant now and will never release it back into the wild. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me!

God i love these videos! You gave me back that joy i had as a kid of just sitting outside and watching a trail of ants for hours. Ive even made my own little ecosphere a few months ago. It sadly died, at least i cant see any movement in it anymore. The algae are doing well at least, the whole water is essentially green, and the plants i put in there are doing amazing as well, so i cant get myself to empty it, if anything its a nice little piece of greenery (though maybe ill introduce some new dirt with hopefully news eggs in it who knows) Oh also, how do you get these great shots? im assuming youre using a good camera, but i was wondering which one. looking at my own ecosystem got a bit dull since im far sighted, and even with glasses its hard to see things THAT small.

LOL when that thing with 18,000 arms fell when being filmed.
