Many demos are not this good. Rick is very careful about recording demos just in case the final producer can't get the sound he wants and just asks for tracks from the demo to use in the final mix.

I’ve had endless discussions about demos - the 2 schools of thought being: 1) Record a simple demo, just vocals and guitar/piano. And 2) Record a full production. I’ve always leaned to No.2. I like to flesh out a complete production because so often, the countermelodies and rhythm are a big part of songs. If a producer/label/music supervisor, etc. want a stripped demo, then I’ll bounce a stem mix. I dunno. I’m glad Rick created this video. It’ll help me make my case in future discussions. Thank you Rick.

That Samson usb Mic that Rick shows @38:08 is absolutely freaking *amazing* for what it is. I currently have one & it's literally not only my main vocal mic, but also *my entire digital/audio interface into my DAW.* I've been using it to record a demo LP that I'm roughly 3 songs into right now, & it's been performing really well imo. $200+ for a vocal mic and audio interface *all in one device* that actually sounds good? Man, what a time to be a musician on a budget! (if anyone wants to hear what it can do for budget recording, I have a few recordings up over on BandLab as @adam_assuaging_pain. disclaimer though: I'm no pro like Rick is)

Another great video, Rick. Every video teaches me something new. :) I know you read these comments, can I make a request to have some more videos done on vocals and singing? You kind of scratched the surface here talking about placement of the mic.I started getting back into singing last year. I was in a choir many years ago, but never worked as a soloist before. One of my biggest troubles is getting grit or distortion to my voice for rock music (the "vocal fry"), doing that without destroying my vocal chords. There are instructors on KZbin, but they all have these expensive courses/classes for singing. I just wanna know the basics to do it without screwing my voice up from an actual professional whose word I would trust (you!). I think you have tons of material you could make videos about for singing... the vocal fry, proximity effect, do pop filters really affect sound quality. Thanks Rick!

What would be *really* helpful would be a video for people who are (non-performing) songwriters looking to present their songs for an artist / band to record. If someone has a great song (only on guitar with vocals), but aren’t into creating a top-sounding ‘band’ demo (like your video), or they are unable to or can’t afford the money, but just want to show off their songwriting skills... what are the A&R people looking for? How clinical does the acoustic guitar track/s need to be? If someone is a great songwriter, but just an okay singer, would that be okay just as long as they get across their songwriting skills? How perfect does a guitar & vocals demo actually need to be? How much attention to production is required if someone is able to lay down their song so that the listener understands what’s going on? Surely, it doesn’t have to be overly produced? A video for the songwriter would be really interesting 👍🏻

Was this recorded in 2007?! I would have loved to hear this on the radio, shame it didn't make the cut. I still wonder why we don't hear (today's version of) songs like this anymore on the radio... at least here in Jakarta, Indonesia, it seems that the only place I get to hear rock is on the oldies radio stations (and I'm starting to worry about the amount of time I'm spending there vs contemporary stations)

Gave a songwriter demo to my manager at request of a major: Majors literally expect a full production song now. What you need them for at that point is anyones guess... Maybe they are just screening for people who feel like signing 50% of all your future and some past work for those who are allergic to money and enjoy working instead of not being on drugs and sleeping? Artists should not have to be professional engineers and producers as they don't have the luxury of 20 years to make magic while trying the jack of all trades thing. Just my 2 bits.

@@RickBeato Oh OK, sorry the end had lots of comments I was trying to clarify that right as you ended...it is hard to visualize people in charge of music who can't imagine what music sounds like. Great video and good song. Personally, I don't like when the vocal part obviously overlaps itself like in this chorus. it sounds too obviously glued together. It seems better to write a song that could be sung naturally. Studio magic should either be hidden or obviously artistically intended.
