Creating a well organized BOM (Bill of Materials)

How do you control part revisions? Let's say I don't want to just come in and edit the properties of a SKU but I want to update it's rev and the info (price, LT, etc) associated with it without losing out on the rev history. I want to be able to take a holistic look at a certain SKU and see how its price varied over a year for example and be able to see if a certain price spike or drop was directly associated with a revision change.
