Your lifestyle can have a huge impact on triggering a depression and maintaining depression symptoms. Fortunately, you can develop an anti-depressant lifestyle to protect you against developing depression or to help pull you out of a depression. The anti-depressant lifestyle revolves around the notion of having a sustainable lifestyle. We hear a lot these days about sustainability in terms of sustainable energy and sustainable forests, for example. But have you ever thought about your lifestyle in terms of sustainability? Do you have a sustainable lifestyle?
To answer this question, you need to think about all of the things in your life that take energy out of your fuel tank (e.g., work/overwork, household chores, parenting, managing challenging relationships) and think about all of the things that put energy back into your fuel tank (e.g., exercise, diet, social interactions, having fun, proper sleep). If the energy out is much greater than the energy in, you are likely to experience burnout and depression. Therefore, it’s important to take steps to ensure that you are engaging in energy promoting activities as a way of warding off depression and ensuring that your lifestyle is sustainable.

Also a very good video that resonates with me. I realized that my depressive episode was built up when I started paying less attention to hobbies, my kids and friendships and payed more attention to a woman and being constantly online and in touch with her. It exploded in my face and now I am rebuilding my life along the lines of what you are talking about. I have signed up for hobby activities and I plan to be more present for my children and my friends. I will find the time and energy for this by not constantly searching for romance and stop being online. Your channel is underestimated. You deserve much more attention, and many more people struggling with depression deserve to see your clips.

I get some satisfaction, some little bit of joy from finishing a task. I can go to sleep at night knowing I did something that day. Other wise, I'm depressed because I wasted a whole day. At 75 yrs of age, lossing a day is depressing.

I'm struggling for the 1st time in my life. This is the 1st time in my life that I can't bounce back. I've been diagnosed with depression and anxiety and I've had physical manifestations like shingles. My job has caused it but for some reason I can't seem to adjust. These videos and my therapist are helping me but I just feel like I'm going to lose my job before I get better.

Very good video, thank you! I keep hearing about 'self care' being so essential for well being/mental health..yet nothing much to describe what 'self care' really is!? So far 'self care' examples are like bubble baths, pedicures, and journaling, oh and practicing 'gratitude'. However, I think the info here explains it so much more succinctly! Thank you! 🙌❣️

Thank you for your comment. Yes, it bothers me when people equate self care with things like bubble baths. It's so much more than that.

I found your channel recently, and the actionable steps you provide have been helping a lot with my depression. I was trying too hard to do things with my current limited capabilities, and it made me feel out of control and hopeless. Setting small achievable goals and building up from there has been making me feel great. Thank you so much! When it comes to keeping my energy in and out in check, I am a bit confused when it comes to social media usage. I use social media to relax by looking at fashion accounts for inspiration. Though at a point the inspiration starts to overwhelm me, and I start feeling drained by it. It’s quite difficult to catch the moment when things turn from relaxing/inspiring to overwhelming. What are your thoughts about social media usage and mental health?

What am i to do if i have anhedonia present along with my depression and anxiety? When i try to do activities that should bring energy in, they feel to me as if they are just draining what little fuel i do have. I have lost or rather don't have things that are meaningful or have value to me.

@DrRamiNader
@DrRamiNader 3 жыл бұрын
Anhedonia is a common symptom and a tricky symptom that gets people to stop engaging in activities that would, in time, help them feel better. The first step is acceptance of anhedonia, followed by realistic goals to increase activity and perseverance with increasing activity, even in the absence of enjoyment. It may mean setting smaller, less draining goals at first and building up slowly over time. I have done a couple of videos on anhedonia if you want more information about this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/opPYnZd-jJWbhq8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/roubiph9jdSHptE For more information on depression management skills, check out some of the videos in this playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLG_XiSJeP3s1xOWOVHDMBPWjZImyu8M8d I hope that helps.

Not sure if this is helpful advice for you, but I had a trauma that made me lose all enjoyment for almost anything at all. The only thing I enjoyed was meditation hypnosis type things to listen to on KZbin. I think it’s the escapism that might be unhealthy but I love it. I don’t know but I feel like it’s healing.

Thanks for the content. I tried putting energy back into my life after a 9-5 job. Then I realized that it was the very activity after work (doing something that I enjoyed myself) that caused my job loss. My boss was a workaholic and expected to the same thing. After that episode, I went into severe episode of depression. In retrospect, I should have stayed late and worked late. My goal is not to repeat the same mistake again. ...

I don't know the situation, but I'd encourage you to rethink your read of what happened. Many jobs take advantage of people with their expectation of extra hours. Unless your after hours activities directly impaired your ability to work it just sounds like your boss had unreasonable expectations.

@@homeschoolingmadeeasy7798 Thanks for your response. What I realized is that there are times( in fact one needs to be cognizant of the situation) we need to be flexible knowing that the situation could be far worse if the crucial activity that sustains one's life ( job) is lost in pursuit of doing something one enjoys (what is mentioned in the video). My situation is far worse than what I was going through when I had the job. Now I don't have a life and the job that would have made my family live a comfortable life.

Hi Dr., in my case, I have been dealing with metronidazole toxicity. I am feeling better but get stuck now in depression and I have been trying to fight this. 5 to 6 months now I haven't had any natural sleep. I did my gut test, the antibiotics had cleaned up a lot of my gut bacteria especially the bacteroides and faecalibacterium. I read decrease in these good gut bacteria can shape your mood. I am depressed. Sleep is no longer a natural thing for me. No medication seem to work for my Sleep. I stopped taking them. I decided to be drinking Camomile tea which helps most of the time now. How can your videos help me overcome this.

Exercise doesn't give me energy. Exercise feels very depleting and meaningless.
@homeschoolingmadeeasy7798
@homeschoolingmadeeasy7798 Жыл бұрын
For many people, we do a kind of exercise we don't enjoy it is draining. And then it becomes a vicious cycle of trying to overcome the guilt of not working out... Exercise should give you the enjoyment of having a working body. Like when you recover from a cold or broken bone, you are so thankful to have a whole body again. There are many things that can make exercise become enjoyable: doing it with someone else, bingeing a favorite show while on the treadmill, putting on some good music. Exercise does not have to be punishing to be beneficial.

I am like this with exercise so now I turn on my music and dance around the house and sing badly as loud as I want. I feel it releases pent up emotions and trapped energy.

@@homeschoolingmadeeasy7798 Don't say "exercise _should_ give you enjoyment", when that _does not_ work for me or other people. Stop _shoulding_ on people. It isn't true, and it doesn't work.
