You are absolutely correct. This video is meant to provide an explanation and rationale for how depression works. In the coming weeks and months I'm going to be posting videos about how a person can go about making changes in behaviors and thoughts to reverse the depression cycle.

This redefines or should I say clarifies my understanding of a phrase I find myself using with others at times which is that feelings are not arguable. What this has meant to me has been that we have a right to our feelings or that feelings have a life of their own but the missing piece was something you filled in here about the fact that we have no direct access to our emotions so it's more than a "right" to feel the way that we do because it often isn't even a choice. It can be quite difficult to defend one's feelings in the face of criticism or somebody telling you to snap out of it. Great suggestion about changing the other two sides of triangle👍

I've had 22 sessions of CBT. They've never felt like a magic bullet, I still react to emotions rather than a thought process. I suppose it has helped with my procrastination a lot, I found that crippling at its worst. I feel more at ease taking a step by step approach, rather than be overwhelmed by the big picture. It enables me to exercise without being a perfectionist, I care less about the goal and meeting a particular standard I self impose on myself. It's made me more aware of other people, they're not just fellow robots now. It's made me realise I was on autopilot. It's made me aware that bumps in the road are to be expected and I have to become more robust and resilient, like a bendy tree in a storm or an earthquake proof building. However, I still feel fragile and revert to type, so I suppose more practice is required. It's made me aware how there are people that will manipulate your weaknesses for their own end. I should dig out my worksheets and do it again, my perspective may be different now. Thanks for the video. 👍🏿❤️

As you say, what you are talking about is a model - and a model can reflect reality more or less. My personal experience with 20 years of depression and anxiety is, that emotions influence thinking and behaviour much stronger than vice versa. And emotions may be influenced by two factors which CBT doesn't systematically focus on, because they're beyond its reach: it's physiology and neurobiology on the one hand and society on the other. It's hard to change these factors by an individual-focused psychotherapy, but therapists should be aware, that their explanation of mental illnesses is only a model (or even a kind of narrative) than a true description of reality.
@DrRamiNader Жыл бұрын
Therapists are, or should be, aware of that. You're correct that we can't control some factors like society, but the focus on CBT is aspects we can control and making positive changes in those areas, which in turn can improve emotions.

Great model, I have one question though, where does the emotion come from? you always start with the emotion or how we feel. I am very anxious, and I feel that my starting point are ideas and not feelings. I see it like this, thoughts then behavior and then emotions. Does this make sense?
@DrRamiNader4 жыл бұрын
Hi Roula - you are absolutely correct. You can enter this model on any side of the triangle, it doesn't have to start with the emotion side. It can start with behaviors or thoughts.
