Hate to break it to you, but that feeling never really goes away because you always notice faults within your work that others don't see... so sometimes their compliments seem fake or condescending because you know you can do better... One thing I find that really helps is to hide a piece after it is done for a while, let my mind forget what my intentions and goals were before bringing it out again. Then I can appreciate it in a new light before my mind starts noticing the faults but by that time, it's viewed as silly mistakes to learn from instead of something to beat yourself up over.

Eagerly awaiting part 2, the wonderful clouds.- Btw, I purchased some of the brushes you recommended in earlier videos - they are really awesome and surely there is at least a very unassuming work of myself in those bristles too 🙃Have a great time painting, Layne, and a pleasant week❤

A gorgeous and serene painting. One thing I noticed is that, if not for the indication of a dirt road in the bottom right hand corner, the scene could have taken place a million years ago. But the road says 'man has been here and fairly recently'. Just a thought.

I can see how the underpainting helps you realize the final painting yet still leaves the ability for some adjustment. You must have to let the layers dry before covering them. This method gives you a slowly realized painting that emerges in layers that relate to each other and make the process a gradual one. It is delightful to watch the final painting emerge.
@LayneJohnsonStudio2 ай бұрын
Yes, I do let each layer dry (but that typically happens overnight). Thanks for watching!

This is a wonderful view of your work and the evolution of a gorgeous painting. I understand the idea of laying down a layer of glaze first, but I was wondering why you painted the entire foreground with the darker neutral colors rather than using the dark colors of the actual trees/bushes. Essentially, you paint right over it anyway. Just trying to understand your process. Thanks so very much for sharing these types of videos with us!
@LayneJohnsonStudio3 ай бұрын
Thanks Allison - The point of the underpainting is to map out the major values (highlights, midtones, and darks). I believe the underpainting colors are most effective for sky luminosity. I often go to darker earth tones for the landscape portion. Umbers, Van Dyke browns, etc. In fact on a recent painting, I used dark greens for the tree portions of the underpainting. If you're interested in learning more, sign up for my free workshop where I go into more detail on my process. laynejohnson.com/workshop

It is called an imprimatura/bistre underpainting. In painting, Imprimatura is an initial stain of color painted on a ground (gessoed canvas or panel). The term itself stems from Italian and literally means "first paint layer". It provides a painter with a transparent, toned ground, which will allow light falling onto the painting to reflect through the paint layers. The oil paint wash (I use Transparent Earth Red from Gamblin mixed with turpentine substitute) is used to begin my underpainting. You can download a copy of my free ebook which goes into more detail at laynejohnson.com/ebook.
