Derek, do you think the light amount of the background and the figure match?

Nope! But it's just a quick mockup in MS Word. You can adjust colors and shading a little but you should really have blended layers or color washes on top to hold it altogether - much easier to do in photoshop.

Can you save as a jpg, than import to a blank document and save as a pdf? Would that eliminate any worries about layering?

I am not really the creator of this video but I believe I can help. You can download all sorts of fonts in different websites. dafont.com is the most popular website to download fonts. However, unless you are open to purchasing a font to use you want to make sure you look for a font that is either public domain or 100% free which can be used for personal or commercial use. In dafont.com after you select what type of font you want, you just make sure your search options are filtering only those fonts so you should press in "more options" and check the boxes of public domain and 100% free. Those fonts you can use for whatever you want.

Your image must be connected to your book title. If your book title have no relation in images-characters, plot of the story, etc must be connected. Hope this may help.

I attempted to utilize the size cover you suggested (6 x 9). Unfortunately the pixel ratio saved was 900 x 1350. Smashwords requires a cover with a minimum width at 1400 pixels and a height/width ratio a minimum of 1.33. How do I obtain the larger pixel ratio?? Thank you. MD

You can you use any stock photos you buy, providing you have the right license - most stock photos sites include up to 500K books sold under the basic license but you need to check carefully.
