A tutorial video explaining how to make a basic book cover using Microsoft Word 2013 that I made for my finals. Sorry for any imperfections in this video. This is the first tutorial video I have ever done.

This is the best tutorial I've seen. I made my book cover while watching and learned so much. I didn't know Word had so many options. Now I just need to learn how to make the physical copy cover, for Create Space. Thank you so much for taking the time to help us.

Wow! Mandee, clear, concise instructions. Great job! I've been watching these videos for months now trying to learn how to use Photoshop to make a book cover to no avail. The instructors either go too fast, or don't tell you what the heck they're clicking on--a total waste of my time. As the commenter below states, "You deserve and A+. Thank you! I will be subscribing and searching for more videos by you!

Thank you for the tutorial. It was easy to follow and I created a really nice book cover, however at the end you said deselect everything, but you didn't show how to do that, plus how can this be saved as a jpeg, or how should it be saved in order to use on other platforms.

Hi Mandee your your tutorial on making your own Book Cover using MS Word is very helpful and well explained. I need to know something. If I can't change the paper size to 6 width and 9 height because it does allow me to can I still make a Book Cover?
@catsNplanets10 жыл бұрын
What wont let you change your paper size? Microsoft Word? I don't see why you wouldn't be able to still make the book cover. Just add all the text boxes and picture smaller according to the paper size. It's not difficult

please note that deviantart.com is a not a free stock site , it's a site that allows designers to publish ans share their work . any use of the content without the designer's permission can lead to a serious consequences
@catsNplanets10 жыл бұрын
Very true, but I stated that SOME artists, not all, offer their work for use without permission. Some simply require you ask or notify them in advance.

Love your tutorial, helped a lot. Now I wanted to ask that when u go on deviantart.com Do u need a be a member or log-in to ask the designers for permission to use their artwork/ designs??? Also first time I ever heard about the site so I'm clueless about it. Again great tutorial saved me a lot of time and headaches!! :P
@catsNplanets8 жыл бұрын
+Kiana Lioe-A-Tjam You do not need to be a member to download from DeviantArt however, for photos to use on book covers, you will need to search for stock images on there. Almost all stock providers have a set of rules to follow. Some let you use their image for commercial use without paying, others require you to give a certain amount if using for commercial use, such as on book covers. The good thing is the images are usually fairly non-expensive. You can also find a wide range of excellent pre-made book covers on DeviantArt for sale. Almost all free sock providers require that you give them credit somewhere in the book for the image used. I use DeviantArt all the time to make Photomanipulations and all I use it stock so I am very familiar with the terms of use. If you have any other questions or require more explanation, let me know and I will answer back. A lot sooner than I did this time too, lol. I apologize for the long wait.

Hi Mandee. Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I'm getting ready to publish a book. I'm assuming that Amazon and other distributors will require a design for the spine and a back cover if you want to offer a print option. I thought I saw a design that contained the front cover, spine and back cover in one image. In any case, what are your thoughts and/or suggestions? Thanks very much.

Thank you so much, Mandee, from Nigeria. Your teaching is cool. I had to go over it again and again and to practise it as well. My only challenge was the last part that has to do with removing the rough edges using shadows. I tried to do that many times with Word 2007, but the rough edges didn't blend well. I guess my Word lacks the feature for that. All the same, your teaching is superb. I can now head for the next stage of publishing my e-book

If you were to print the book cover how would it fit the book that you are covering? Microsoft typically prints A4 paper.
@catsNplanets10 жыл бұрын
Your question is a little confusing to me because of two things. Number 1: The printer that you use determines the paper sizes you can print on including Microsoft printers, and number 2: Not all books are the same size. To see what size paper your printer is compatible with, I would suggest looking at the printers manual. Even if your printer is only compatible with A4 paper sizes, that does not mean that another Microsoft printer can't print on different paper size. Also after reading your comment I did a little research and also got the same answer: use a paper size of 6x9 for offset printers. The book cover I created would need offset printing. Here is a link that also verifies the size I used: en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Basic_Book_Design/Page_Size I hope all that made sense. If I am still not getting what you are asking please verify what you mean. P.S. Might I remind every one that I made this video for my Microsoft Word1 as my final project. I am not an expert as I am still taking classes.

For a first video, you did great. I thought your information presentation was very good and polished; However, and I am not being mean here; I'm just presenting my opinion and I'm not making a personal attack but your voice is very high pitched and contains a lot of treble. It is very piercing at times -- to the point of hurting my ears. Some of It may just be me. Perhaps It may be the microphone or the settings of your recording device. In the future, you my want to soften your tone a lot. With that said, I've been using MS Word for years and I never knew to hold the CTRL button down when expanding a picture. With that single bit of info alone, you have helped me tremendously. Thank you young Lady. You have a bright and promising future ahead of you. Keep up the fine work!

Great video. Everything I know already, was seeing if there was anything I didn't know in newer versions I but it's pretty much the same without the need to run to powerpoint constantly. Also I am so sorry for all these others posting silly comments on how to convert things, if they don't know how to convert simple doc thin file formats they should learn a lot more before eventually messing with fat file formats like epub, mp3 ect
@catsNplanets10 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching. You are right, Word 2013 is a lot like previous versions especially Word 2010. As far as others posting about converting the book covers for ebooks, the only way to learn is to ask questions. I just unfortunately don't know much about ebooks and their file formats. Maybe its time for me to learn more about them as well.
