After seeing an F-14 Tomcat up close at a museum I decided it is the sexiest aircraft I had ever seen! So I decided to figure out how to make it work as a variable geometry aerospace fighter! This is my design!
Now for sale on CGTrader at www.cgtrader.c...
Also the f-14 Tomcat model used in this was purchased here! Plus it donates to Ukraine so thats good! www.cgtrader.c...

The variable wing is quite elegant in its simplicity. The aircraft seems HUGE but so are modern day fighters; always to my surprise though. The idea of jamming repulser lifts needs to be explored more!

Star Wars fighters are extremely small. Look at a P-51 Mustang next to an F-15 Eagle and then realize that most Star Wars fighters are the size of the portion of the P-51 from the wing forward.

@@dianapennepacker6854 The purpose of an interceptor is to intercept bombers and carry weapons powerful enough to destroy them in one shot. This meant a large aircraft armed with large, heavy weapons (usually missiles). And they weren't necessarily terribly fast - although the most prominent interceptors were high-speed aircraft like the MiG-25 Foxbat/MiG-31 Foxhound, F-15 Eagle and F-14 Tomcat, one of the earliest was the slow Northrop F-89 Scorpion, carrying a pair of multi-rocket pods.

Very nice. Still not sure about the cross fins, but it does have a very unique frame because of them, so I can’t complain. Personally I would have tilted them inward and across the whole frame to evoke the A-wing, but I’m often told I’m too derivative. I absolutely love the paint job you gave it. It just looks so aggressive. As some ideas for your next project: Helicopters. Star Trek shuttles/fighters/runabouts in Star Wars. Stealth aircraft like the Spirit or Nighthawk would be interesting to see adapted into Star Wars (not the Blackbird, since it already has been), and I really wonder how you’ll implement the subtle touches of such designs.

Personally i would see this more in a Battletech setting instead of Star Wars They have a lot of fighters that look similar to this, and even there they have a couple of "swing wing" designs. There's also several more Franchises where this might have looked good, like "Wing Commander" or "Space: Above and Beyond". As for more recent franchises i can see this totally working in "Everspace 2"

Gotta say, the Sabarcat could fit into SW universe. I appreciate alot of the details from the F-14 you place into the design (the outer missile pods look like the wing root missile pods on the real life F-14, the missile placement is similar to big Grumman cat in real life). Positive feedback, base on the F-14. you could have a near full body missile launcher instead for the 4 RJ-45 missiles. That way the saber cat would be using the Bombcat upgrade (allowing the SF-14 is carry torpedo's, assault rockets, and implus bombs). I will say the paint job is very good edit: no more thing, the large wing area could work, look up the F-39 or F-16XL as those are full fuselage wing versions of the F-16

A fighter armed with a railgun would do nasty work against a capital ship by simply staying out of CIWS range and hammering it.

When I saw your Community posts on this WIP I had tried to comment, but YT (in its insane algorithm) would not let me do so. I felt that if you moved the cockpit back further into the body (with a possible astromech slot behind or alongside) would take it away from a RL fighter jet and move it solidly into the SW realm. While I was not sure about the varible-geometry wings at first, I think that you have nailed it perfectly. Where the balsters are attached on the A-Wing is the openning for the wings on the tomcat and the slot on the side is where the glove vanes retract into. In a way ST always had a Tomcat since ROTJ!

Masters aerospace engineering student (with space technology so best of both worlds) In aerospace there is a saying, if it looks right it probably is right and your design certainly looks right, especially in terms of aerodynamics but lets assume we got some sci fi materials that allow lot higher stresses to be tolerated. Your spacecraft has: -Wing root extensions which greatly improve manoeuvrability and angle of attack performance. -The placement of engines under wing root extensions also improve high AOA performance of the engines and reduce the risk of engine stalling out. -The spacecraft has an ability for forward swept wings which also improves the aircrafts turning performance and stall performance significantly, look at Su 47. Only issue with this design is that its expensive to make due to the wing loading. -It has a huge wing surface like the drakken, ignoring wing loading this would make the plane insanely manoeuvrable Improvements -The spacecraft seems to have space for an internal weapons bay for missiles which would improve stealth characteristics -Nose section seems kind of small so in modern terms would be hard to fit a large and powerful radar in - I would add control surface on both side of the wings so they can be used in both modes as well as having leading edge control surfaces which improve manoeuvrability, look at f18/f16 - External countermeasure pod produces drag so it would be lot better if it was embedded inside of the fuselage I understand that this is a star wars star fighter but I'm making my judgement from my aerospace background and this design on paper seems really good. I would probably make a lot more in depth analysis of this design however im on antibiotics so my brain is soup however im a huge fan of the F14 and you did a great job on your star wars interpretation so I could help myself but comment on your design. If you need any aerospace advice in the future im more than happy to help, could maybe think about doing CFD testing however its something id have to consider when im feeling better.

The VF-1 Valkyrie from Macross also combines F/A-18 and F-14 features but even more resembles the F-14 than your "Sabercat". Your design does look more original than the VF-1 Valkyrie, though in lore the VF-1 was built by that universe's stand-in for Grumman... and then takes the variable geometry to the extreme, not only with variable sweep on the wings but the ability to be a fully transformable mech. It is also present in BattleTech under the name Phoenix Hawk LAM (Land-Air Mech). Star Citizen also has the best aiming axis not being the vertical (in space, doesn't apply in atmosphere). It is the 45 degree; you have to combine pitch and yaw to get best rotation rate.

As an F-14 fan, I can say the Sabercat is a great design that does the original justice, but I will admit it doesn't look awfully Star Wars-y. The best way to change that would be to add some "imperfections" around it, stuff like exposed pipes and radiators on the engine nacelles and duller paint with more wear and tear on it. That second part would have some basis in reality too, F-14s often looked more dirty and worn than other fighters, which I think because they were always exposed to the corrosive ocean air

If you want to focus on the dogfighting aspect, you'll definitely want to keep the armaments as centrally located as possible in the nose, and have a high rate of fire. Nose mounted armaments are significantly easier to land hits with than weapons mounted in the wings or on the wing tips, and are a lot easier to use for snap shots and close quarter engagements. They also conserve ammunition since you're not trying to land hits with one side or the other, and have improved accuracy at range since the pilot does not have to account for weapon convergence. Having weapons centered on the craft also improves roll performance and G-loading characteristics, since there's no additional weight from weapons distanced from the fuselage of the craft. This also saves additional weight that would have been used to reinforce the wings against the weight of wing-mounted weapons. I really like the variable geometry design, since that pulls the under-mounted engines in towards the center of gravity - but as soon as those wings come out in atmosphere, those gigantic engines would probably rip them off as soon as the fighter tried to roll.

And its large engine give the look of an aircraft that use pure thrust of engine rather than aerodynamics to achieve high speed (which it kinda is). & also it's one of my favorite fighter jet along with F-14, F-15, Panavia Tornado, & some others

Neet! I like that you yaw more then pitch. This is good for over coming g-forces in high end maneuvers. I would of had the outboard engine nacelles slot into the fuselage when the wings folded in, becoming part of the main atmospheric thrusters. This takes care of the problem with outboard nacelles not being aerodynamic.

Another craft I'd love to fly in what ever universe it is slotted into. The ability to dominate fighters built purely for space engagements that have come down to the atmosphere of a planet could lead to a extremely high kill ratio in a planetary defence scenario. As even if the attacker can control the space around a planet, if they can't control the air it will be more or less impossible to land transports with out extreme casualties.

Your description of the proposed isolated world of origin for this fighter is not too disimilar to what actually happened in the old EU in one of the last of the X-Wing series of books. The New Republic met an isolated world that had it's own indigenous exo/atmospheric fighter and Wedge Antilles and a few Rogues were sent as ambassadors as pilots were highly revered in the society, and intrigue and hijinks ensued. Starfighters of Adumar was the title. It gives a good verbal description of the Adumari fighters, been a long time since I read it but worth you checking out.

Really enjoyed the video especially the blender sections as i am also a 3d modeler. And i am always trying to improve. So out of curiosity what command or function did you use at 2:13 to move the wing without moving cube that will become the engine while still keeping it attached? Every time i use something like parenting it moves the Object with the parent without keeping its rotation the same.

I used a restrict axis constraint, and the fuselage as the reference. I believe it could also be done with bones but this seemed easier.

I do think that Star Wars could do with some more modern inspiration for its ship design, especially in the sequel era to illustrate the advance of technology and to break up the monotony of yet more TIEs and X-Wings. Macross had the right idea.

I made a F14 Star cat for Star Trek and 1/350th scale you can get 2 of the beast inside the hanger with the wings swept back. The only old school weapon to survive was the Vulcan 20 mm gun added 4 mark IV and or mark VI photon torpedos two forward phaser banks one aft. Two impulse power units two warp main Engines . It could max out around warp 7.5.

Also, while it may not quite have that distinct Star Wars look we are used to, the galaxy is a big place, and im sure the technology base for different civilizations stretches across a broad spectrum. So theres no reason this beautiful fighter couldnt exist in SW canon.

Awesome! I think it would actually perform pretty well in Earth’s atmosphere. Those “space engines” would act like drop tanks in an atmosphere which might compromise maneuvering but aside from that it looks pretty sound. Nice to see some F-18 lineage in there as well. Now let’s see the Star Wars universe get an F-22 (with stealth) and make use of Thrust Vectoring in space battles!

Heh. A very interesting design and it being to "jetty" for Star Wars. Well it is not the first time Star Wars used real life aircraft as a basis for Star Wars ships see the Royal Naboo Starship and its kin which are based on things like the Blackbird. Also, you are not the only one who has used the Tomcat as a basis for sci-fi fighter, for as you mentioned people talking about the VF-1 Valkyrie from Macross/Robotech. That fighter is based on the Tomcat as well. Though this is a more unique take on it.

The texturing needs either more greebles (think the solar panels on the TIE) or less (aka Naboo spacecraft) to make it feel more like something in the Star Wars universe. Maybe adding sharper angles instead of the flowing lines of the design. The two vertical tailfins feel like they've been lifted straight off the Tomcat, and don't fit well in the universe either. Making them pop up from inside the hull or swing up (down?) from behind the hull when the main wings configure for atmospheric flight would feel more authentic to the universe, as well as calling back to the variable geometry of both the X-wing and the F-14. It's a very nice design, and you put in a lot of effort and thought in how it works. I like it!

3:47 I know this is nitpicking but I don't like this statement as it implies that the aim 7 Sparrow is short range missile like the aim 9 but the aim 7 is a Beyond visual range missile I mean sure it's not as long range as the aim 54 Phoenix (which depending on variant is the longest range air to air missile the US has ever had) and the aim 7 did have a flaw of needing guidance from the aircraft launching it meaning that the aircraft launching the aim 7 would have to fly directly towards the Enemy meaning the aircraft would lose a fair amount of distance in between it and the target but still the aim 7 is not a short range missile for its time

Feels a lot like a fighter that would appear in the Stargate series or some other smaller sci-fi franchise. I don't remember if space fighters were a thing in Star Trek, but this design surely isn't something I'd expect in the Star Wars universe. Still, really cool concept and very true to the SW lore when it came to weapon and engine technology.
