How to make a Original Character Step 1: No Tracing or Coping other people's artwork Step 2: Learn The Fundamentals of Drawing (ex. Gesture, Anatomy, Perspective, Proportions and etc.) Step 3: Learn how to study people's artwork instead of tracing and coping. Draw their art work as a studies get into the mind of the art, try to figure out how he or she came up with the drawing you're studying. Utilizing other people's rt work can help you, however it can and will cripple you if all you do is copy (ex. You draw a cartoon cat, then try to draw a realistic man, resulting in a failure.) Step 4: Buy some books on drawing realism and cartoons Step 5: Give you're character a story, where they're from, powers and abilities, origins, flaws and etc. Step 6: Give your self time to grow, I know how much you wanna draw a character based off of Naruto or fan-art, but you need to learn the fundamentals. If you skip the fundamentals you will produce some really bad art. Step 7: You must work be persistent, passionate and dedicated to drawing. If you can't draw eyes get some pictures of eyes and draw them 100 times, but when you reach your 101th drawing, you better know how to draw those eye from you're mind. Step 8: Don't procrastinate, if you get tired of drawing, take 20 minute break then get right back to it. Remember, skipping the fundamentals will get you no where, once you've become proficient in them, then you can start to experiment and design. If you finished reading the steps and are saying no way I'm doing all that. Well, I know you will never be an artist or create a OC that looks accurate and cool, as for people who actually want to try my steps..... Good Luck! I know you will improve on your art skills and create wonderful original character.

soritan zosa Like I said in step 3, don't copy, study their work If you suck at drawing arms don't just copy one arm and then try to draw a realistic human, study many kinds of arms, realistic, cartoons, different style. If you have any more questions please ask :D

berniemacsgreatesthi Now there is suppossed to be a strict line separating what is truly original work and what is plagiarism or even art theft. I'm sure quite a bit of artists have had this kind of situation before (myself included). There are a few reasons to explain the situation such as "I really liked that particular character design and I wanted to make it my own" or "I wanted to replicate this guy's work, but it evolved into my own" I've got quite a bit of experience at drawing and I'm afraid to be called an "art thief". How do I deal with this situation? BTW, really liked these steps of yours, they're quite motivating!

That bit where you say how your own characters can surprise you. I know what you mean, I've been working on a story with a friend for over a year and we both are surprised at what our own characters are willing to do. That even though we created them, that they can still surprise us. And I think that's when you know that your character has had a lot of development. :) This was an awesome video, Mark! Keep it up!
@12ealDealOfficial11 жыл бұрын
For me, writing for characters goes in this order: 1) Where and under what circumstances does this character exist? 2) What is this character's core motivation? 3) What is their psychological disposition? 4) Why? 5) What kind of people does this person associate with? Once I answer these questions, I begin to flesh out the story in this order: 1) What happens at the end? 2) What are the most important details I want to incorporate? 3) Why would the reader want to read it a second time? 4) How close to the end can I start? 5) How much unnecessary clutter can be removed?

When I cam up with my characters, I learned o draw them over and over at first by breaking down the elements in their faces and bodies and basically doing a study of my own drawings so I can reproduce them at that angle and at different angles. I also noticed certain things like the character's smile, the way they would move vs. the way other characters move is equally important to making the characters distinguishable from one another.
@KOBUN408 жыл бұрын
Do you keep a "police line up" chart for height and size comparison? I fully agree it isn't just the look of the character but the dialog, posture, and general reactions that make them distinct. Very helpful.

Obviously I'm not Mark but one bit of advice I can give in this regard is referencing, referencing, referencing. If you have a character you should view them in a three dimensional way. You should have a general idea of what they look like from every angles. Make sure your character is fully fleshed out in your mind and then use references of pictures of either real life people or other (well done) drawings from the angles you wish to have your character facing. There;s nothing wrong with using references. Every accomplished artist uses references.

Oh and mark? I wanna know how much backgrounding you should do while drawing in the panels. I always see some people do half done shaded backgrounds or high detail super backgrounds but I want to know how much backgrounding is needed, when, where and how. I'm really terrible at doing backgrounds and stuff so this would be really helpful.
@KuroAlis10 жыл бұрын
I am far from being an expert, but what I've read is that it is best to do a large background when introducing a new surrounding(classroom, park, street, etc.) and less detailed backgrounds during conversations(just parts of the background to remind the reader of the location of the characters and just halftones/black/white). I hope this helps a bit :)

Do you write you stories/dialogue out like a book or a play first and then illustrate them? Or do you just have the story in your head and plop it down in the bubbles as you're drawing? How's that aspect of it work?

Emma Frost You're welcome! :) So you want to make erotic stories??? Nice! I'm interested in that genre as well! In my mind everything is better if you mix it with SCI-FI! It can be horror, comedy, romance, drama, even erotic!

gotta say i love your advice on doing dialogue with your characters, something that had never crossed my mind, but after hearing it i feel like it could really help a lot with my drawings. Thanks dude! and on a side note.. I love your videos, they've helped me considerably with my technique and style. Keep it up Mark, people like myself truly appreciate what your are doing. Many thanks.

when you create a story what comes first for you character design, character personality or the plot of the story?
@KitKatMMD11 жыл бұрын
Normally, a story is better when the character is created first. If you try to build a plot around a character, it develops better and has more potential. When you create a plot and try to fit in a character, it doesn't' really mesh and it can feel out of place. However this doesn't mean you *have* to develop the character first. As long as the plot and character blends and makes sense, then you'll have a better outcome in a story.
@Gabu_11 жыл бұрын
KitKat1122 I have to agree yet disagree. Characters "thrown" into already developed plot can also work pretty neatly, as long as you can make it fluid. Of course, that takes a lot of skill and experience, but it's beautiful when masterfully applied.

This is an excellent video Mark! I can draw pretty well, I do lots of observational drawing, perspective studies, and anatomy studies. But writing and designing characters is something I really, really struggle with. Thanks for the tips!

Do you have any advice on how to create supernatural characters? So ones that don't resemble humans and are not animals, as such.

Remember: Spiders have eight legs!!! I hate people thinking they have six... Uhm sorry ^^ but +Devoid up there is right. You should look at some monsterlike chreatures you are going to draw and see how they can pose and act.

if you want help then think about what position she is in. depending on what is going on or what she has done in the past then you could throw a twist in there to throw your readers off and give you a chance to think of a new personality for her

this is just some advice for those who are now starting to draw. well,if u try at first like drawing a hand or arm and u don't get it right true again. I have a friend at school and she wants to draw like me,almost everyone wants me to teach them how to draw and I do. but the thing about her is that she tries something it comes out wrong she starts to cry and say she is bad at it. I tell her that not everything has to come out perfect in the first try but then she says "right,well how ur just come out perfect?!" and I'm like,"I practiced!" but she thinks that I was born with the talent of drawing. and its just sometimes it gets me angry,she cries and she says she gives up but she can't draw cuz she just tries once. when u draw u have to practice, idc if it's 200 times but u have to keep going. every artist starts from the beginning and never gives up that easily. believe me I am still learning a lot if things but the thing that I know at the moment is because of how much I practiced and how much effort I gave it. another thing,if u think that u can't draw hands just with ur imagination try copying one,same with the hair and the eyes and stuff just to practice and u will see that one day u might even draw it by yourself. nobody borne with talent everyone has to learn. just saying to give y'all motivation.

That's amazing advice! About what you said at the beggining, your friend might feel down when she compares herself with you, maybe even jealous and doesnt admit it. Try to always be supportive of her drawings and give advice like "it could be easier if you did it this way", "if you do this a lot it will get better" or even suggest her to watch mark crilley videos lol. She might just have a lack of self confidence and believes she can't improve.

+Magda Fachada that's great idea,I will try to do that and I hope she listens..😅

+Real Lucy Heartfilia There was a time I kinda lacked confidence and thought only people born with talents would draw well, so I often thought I couldn't improve even if I practised XD So that girl might just be feeling the same way. If she gets support and advice, she might get a little more confident of her skills :)

I love just coming up with characters for fun. The way I do it is I find a black character sheet and decided what kind of character I want to make, then start to carve out a personality by filling the questions on the sheet. And once I do that, I think of a name and then draw them. Already having a personality really helps me to decided how to draw them, it helps to find hair styles, clothing ect. So if anyone hasn't tried this method I would suggest it :) I have one character in particular that I absolutely love at the moment, I just come up with a few concepts then just let it fly from there.
