These simple project videos are great for people to build up their skills. Love them! At what point would you burnish the edges if you choose to do so?

Hi Shirley, You can burnish at just about any point. My call would be just prior to dying, but, it can be burnished before molding, during molding (maybe about halfway through the dry time so the leather still has moisture but it now has some body too) or when wet with the dye. Any step would work, but, if you’re slicking early then I may slick again as the last step. I hope this helps!

Great video's. I do have one question. On taller molds how do you how do you account for the leather as it bunches up? As the bowl goes up it has a constant circumference, but the leather has an ever increasing circumference. That leather has to go somewhere... Right?

If the hat is something like a basic outback hat it’s not too difficult to make the pattern. The brim is easy enough to figure (3” or 4” width) and the riser is just like a gusset. You can cut each end at a slight angle to bring the crown in some and then the crown comes straight from the hole that’s cut from the brim. I would sew the crown to the riser inside out and then reverse. This would give you a nice look. Getting a perfect hat with a perfect fit can take some time, experimenting and few duds, but, a simple hat can be done nicely. Take a look at some images on Google and you’ll start to see some of the finer details.

there is also some classic forms where you can stretch your 3 to 4 oz veggie tan leather to make a bowler style hat and there you go

Do you have any tips for handling the corners on a square or rectangle tray?

There’s only one way I’ve seen that looks good for a square corner and that’s to fold the four edges up. This will make the leather protrude out at each corner. Pinch the two sides together at the corner, add a rivet, tie, screw post…then flare out the leather outside of each corner with your thumbs/fingers and it will give it a very cool look. This is hard to explain, so, let me know if a pic would be worth a thousand words!

Out of curiosity: I noticed when you buffed the leather balm, that your rag came up with a little bit of what looked like the dye. Is that some of the dye rubbing off or is it something else?

Hi Chris, Yes, when you buff the top coat you will get a little bit of color from the dye but it's important to remove that because that way it won't rub off on skin, clothes, etc. Hope that helps!

My brother in law is from Italy (he's been here in the U.S for 30 years ) he said they made leather bowels and used to Wax harden them and it made them water proof ? . He explained how they did it but he would have to show me how its done . Have you ever done this if so can you do a video on it Please .

Hi Garrison, Yes, wax hardening (Cuir Bouilli) is an ancient way to harden leather and it works nicely! Armour was made this way for 2 millennia (or more?). Get his advice because this is serious old-school!

Seeing thoose colored leafs got me thinking: My main problem atm is related.. color... sure I can dye something and get a decently even coat, antique also, but when should I be using dye and when should I realy be using paints and avoid dye "completly" for tooling? I've seen some impressive things done with airbrushed dye to get different realy even shading, I've also seen some great work with paint and brush. However... I see great, shaded/tooled , colored things that looks to be just dyed eg green leafs; when I try to dye a leaf/vine green, all the tooling detail gets lots//the shading is now just a flat green, adding antique ontop hasnt realy helped me, it still remains a flat... green tone compared to the life from the more common natural/brown/antique combo. I use fiebing pro dye and ecoflo antique gels. Anyone understanding my ramblings and got some idea on what I'am talking about and screwing up?

Hi Ceril, The paint is the only way I go unless it’s a full panel or larger design. You probably are, but, are you adding a top coat over the dye or paint? This will help the colors immensely and will give both the dyed and painted areas the same level of gloss, but, I’m with you on the dyes having less “life” than the paints. I have an airbrush but am not really up to speed on the considerable details when using one, so, I tend to brush. Tape helps, and, I may suggest Saddle-Lac for the top coat. It needs to be a bit warmer than room temp and I apply it very lightly (leaf bowl in the video), but, no rubbing or buffing needed so I don’t worry about the paint reconstituting and smearing. See if this helps? Please feel free to comment/email if I can clarify anything, or, if I’ve missed the question all together!

No, they do not - we apologize if we said they do. The colors used in the video are saddle tan, and then a mix of light brown and mahogany.

@@WeaverLeatherSupply oh! No, yall didn't say they did, I just wish the option existed. I've seen a few videos from weaver about how much easier and better pro dye is than regular alcohol dye, but the color options I like are limited.
