It is impossible to miss the curving and sinuous structure located in Paris's 16th arrondissement, which has the bearing of a ship built of glass. This building is the Fondation Louis Vuitton; the museum and cultural centre designed by modern architecture's greatest transformer of shapes, Frank Gehry-the Pritzker prize-winning designer whose buildings have earned him the status of a household name. In this heartfelt portrait of both the architect and the building he has created, filmmaker Emile Rafael lets the man and one of his most unique structures speak for themselves. Mounted by arching glass sails, the building-whose initial concept was that of a fish-is depicted from its smallest details to its shimmering external envelope. Seeming to sail on the lawns of the Bois de Boulogne, the Fondation is revealed as a building in motion, continually slipping and flowing like the creature on which it is based. It draws parallels with Gehry's other great monuments to culture; the Bilbao Museum, the Guggenheim, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall, where exciting shapes elevate the works of art they host and contain.
Speaking about his meditative portrait of the great shape-shifter of modern architecture, Rafael explains: "Gehry's presence and energy was enough to fill the entire building. We spoke at great length about his love for art in all its guises, including how architecture is often overlooked as an art form in itself. With the film, my job was to try and capture what we had spoken about visually-to film the building with the same poetry and sense of movement and expression that Gehry had described and so aspired to in designing it."

“... it gets blurred, because architecture, as well as being art is an act of social conscience, because you’re making buildings for all kind of people that give them shelter, make them feel loved and accepted.” I’ll never look at the buildings the same way after hearing this.

I've always thought of Gehry as more an artist than a designer of buildings. His work has more to do with evoking thought than with practicality. I'm just glad there are those who can affordable him, because his designs make day to day life all the more interesting.

Great wisdom in designs. In Chinese philosophy, in order to achieve equanimity of the mind, we need to balance the Ying and Yang, the solid and void, hot and cold, static and movement. Gehry designs that are so dynamics are to balance the statics of most of the buildings.

We look back to Greek and Roman architecture because that is when it was perfected. Every single century since it was erected the world has come to see it there, to visit it there. There was no architecture 300,000 years ago to go back to and 2,000 years from now they will still be going to Rome to see it.I'm not sure sure they will be going to Bilbao 2000 years from now to see it. Frank, you can't talk like your work has stood the test of time when your still alive to talk about it. Let's wait 200 years or 2,000 years and see if your buildings are still drawing people like Rome and Greece are.

Current task: creating wonder in the banal, in a way that is relevant, not pastiche, and doesn’t seek praise that it is not deserving of. It’s a challenge, I hope I can find answers that are close enough to right that I’ll be happy. It’s a difficult task because starchitects don’t often deal with banalities outside of residential (which they treat as pavilions).

Well, even though this is a very special building - where does the form come from and why? just because of a fish? Great architecture combines forms and functions. A great concept is the combination of both. Sounds more like "we have cash, so let's build something abstract." I guess there were a lot more thought processes going on in the background, but this documentary didn't touch on them. Every single detail and element on a building should have a purpose...its not supposed to be a gimmick.

Its always "what I feel..." with these kind non technical artsy kind of people with implicit declaration from them their feeling is better than yours and I am special look at me mindset. Never "what I know..." and I know from experience they are quick to being political and petty. And architects office is certainly that plus very stifling.

There are architects like this guy Gehry, Eric Owen Moss... who are on extreme end of discipline that tries to make buildings into art objects for their shameless vanity and just to be different. Their work will not be influential. It is noteworthy only to those uneducated and have "look at me!" personalities. Serious serial exhibitionists.
