I was excited to catch up with Mari from Mari Polyglot to talk about how she makes time to learn languages! We discuss our thoughts around learning languages, and she shared some tips on how long you should study per session and per week as well as some general ideas on scheduling languages. 07:28 "especially with German" I feel you 😭 German was one of the first languages I started to study and it was so hard that I thought I could never learn a foreign language again. Then I picked up Spanish and for around 3 months I saw the progress that I couldn't see with German for years. So don't get discouraged, people, some languages are just tough!

Having a schedule is definitely helpful but interestingly I didn't always stick to it. Consistency is more important I'd say. Study a bit every day, listen, read in the language you want to learn and it's not a biggie if you don't do it according to your schedule. As long as you don't stop learning a language you are good to go. Thanks for the videos girls!

Personally, I tried making schedules where I write down the actual time period from when until when will I study but it didn't work. Then I tried to just plan a week ahead but make only a to-do list for the next 7 days. It didn't work again, so what I do now Is I know which resources I want to use, which books do I want to finish and write the to-do list the day before or in the morning. For me, that's the best to do, since it gives much more flexibility If I didn't finish something I can do the next day and plan accordingly. But It is really important to know, to be aware of what resources you will use in the next x week/month. And being conscious while learning a language is important for me, it helps to create language learning habits easily.

I used to have this problem. Now I plan just for the next day. I write what I would like to do, then I read a hour after and I see if it's possible or not, just to garantee it's a realistic plan. And I too write things I can do if I have more free time or I'm feeling motiveted.

For me having fun apps is key for my lazy days. I like Drops and Beelingual. Drops is addictive! I put a Beelingual story while eating. Even if it's 15 min, better than nothing. Watch BTS Run when I wanna be lazy. I enjoy it but it exposes me to Korean at the same time.

Great video! I’m always interested to see how people go about tackling the huuuge journey of language learning. I loved the comments as much as the video. In the beginning I took a Spanish course so I did a few modules in the course maybe an hour a day 3 or so times a week and Anki flash cards here and there everyday when I had time. The quarantine has really given me the opportunity to take things into my own hands since finishing the course. I like to plan for my week ahead by assigning myself tasks and homework that I get to check off a list (so Sat/Sun I sit and write out the next weeks tasks on each day in my planner pretty randomly. I just try to make sure I switch it up) . Tasks include 1 ch. of a workbook, 1hr of Anki (20 min blocks), teaching myself 1 new grammar structure (or Spanish mood 😩), acquire/drill 6 new verbs, acquire/drill 6 new adjectives, make and update any new knowledge into an Anki flash card for practice, 1hr. Spanish listening, write a journal in Spanish, etc. In quarantine, I study intently an hour to 3 hours a day. On my worst day, Im at least watching a ton in Spanish and drilling some anki flash cards . I’m also not too hard on myself if the tasks aren’t completed. I simply draw an arrow down and the task gets pushed to the next day which can be crazy but I don’t take it too too serious and I enjoy the challenge. Since learning a language this year, it’s been the most successful I’ve ever been at keeping a planner. A win in itself!

I just discovered this channel maybe a week or two ago, and I have to say that I'm obsessed. I started having an interest in languages as early as middle school. By high school I knew for a fact that I wanted to be fluent in at least four languages by the end of my lifetime. Here I am, nearly 23 years old with a bachelor's degree, and I still don't know enough Spanish to consider myself fluent. But this channel has really inspired me to start taking charge of my language learning so I can turn my dream into a reality. Thanks for the encouraging content, Lindie, and for introducing us viewers to other members of the language learning community! 🥰

5:57-6:26 This was such a great piece of advice! As somebody learning Japanese, I often find words that are new to me because of kanji so I get discouraged when I don't understand a majority of what I'm reading without looking it up. I really like her idea of just taking the most relevant and useful words and focusing on learning those, and just learning the rest for the moment so you can read what you're reading.

I struggle making language schedules, mainly because I'm way too ambitious and keep on imagining that I don't ever just wanna chill. I thought I would have lots of time in quarantine, but unfortunately, my schedule has slipped. I've written down some things that I would like to focus on for Polish, however, it's unlikely that I'll end up starting until maybe 4pm due to procrastination or other unforeseen activities. This video brought up a good point. There is such a thing as too much studying. Learning a language does take time. I can certainly empathize with struggling or steadily studying in a certain language. I've been studying Mandarin for 7 years and I just passed HSK 4. It took just as long for me to feel comfortable speaking Spanish with strangers.

When this was happening for me I just kept drilling what I already knew without sweating the fact that I wasn’t acquiring new knowledge because new knowledge can take more time. Just be an expert at what you know for now!

Mari's pronunciation is excellent, I couldn't believe she is from Venezuela. However, I gotta mention one tiny mistake we Spanish native speakers make when speaking English: we tend to say "this/that people" because in Spanish the word people may be translated to "gente", which is singular. I know you're learning Spanish, Lindie. In case you didn't know, there you go. Keep up the pace. I love your content😉

@@poshy6534 You're welcome. Lemme give you a few examples as well: "La gente espera al presidente." means ""People are waiting for the president/PM". "Mucha gente no quiere saber la verdad" means "A lot of people DO NOT" want to know the truth". Keep it up with Spanish, it's a very rich and useful language.

Is impressive the fact that how they study is totally possible and real, not that thing you see around about getting fluent in three months. It's possible but it demands an effort and time that most people don't usually have. The best as they say is to go on your own pace and be consistent with it. As Lydia Machova says "Language learning is not a sprint, it's a marathon". Excellent tips

A month ago I created a schedule for my language learning during quarantine and it has been really helpful! I study my target language (german) 5 days a week, from 30 minutes up to 1:30 hour depending on my mood. I study my improvement language (French) 3 times a week for about half an hour or an hour but I focus mainly on exposure with tv-shows and movies. And I study my newest language (arabic) at least 2 times a week for at least 2 hours, but I have so much fun learning it that sometimes I study it more times a week. :) Loved this video, great tips!

Quarantine has been such a godsend for my language learning. It’s the most I’ve ever been able to keep at a schedule for something. Granted, Spanish makes me happy so, it’s easy. Arabic is on my list! I’m gonna start the process the second half of 2021 😬

My philosophy: 1) Frequency trumps time, meaning study/practice often, not long. And minimally do SOMETHING everyday. 2) Cross training. Do a little of this and a little of that. 3) Study as long as it’s fun.

Gracias! Great tip from the pros. Estoy aprendiendo español y esto me ayudará mucho. As much as i want to spend so much time studying, but i can't focus due to some daily priorities and it's tiring also. I even startes dreaming of some words probably because im pushing myself too much. I find taking a break helps a lot and memorizing number of important words to in a day is really effective. As it doesn't stress you out and clutter my brain.

I loved this video! So few people bring out the importance of rest! I tend to be overoptimistic and schedule too much and then beat myself up when I don't manage... I'm working on this. The problem is that I get these obsessive phases, when it's easy for me to overachieve, but it's not really sustainable in the long run and I'm trying to figure out how to deal when the obsessive phase ends, to still do something and keep on studying, just not as intensively.

I'm so happy that you said that you need days off of learning a language and 4 days a week should be enough. I'm using Anki and I find it very frustrating that you have to use it everyday or else you get a crazy amount of reviews. What should I do? Ditch Anki? I have a love/hate relationship with it for years

For anyone learning German I can recommend the series "Druck" on KZbin. It's very modern with colloquial German. It can be hard, but it is very well done and can teach a lot about culture etc. Start with the order "Staffel 1" :)

One of the most important things I've learned: Forcing yourself to study EVERYDAY, is not a good system. I found that studying 30 min per day was less affective than studying for 1-2 hours a few times a week instead. Schedules don't take into account our daily moods/energy levels/other responsibilities, so it's better to study when you're in the best mood for it and you can maximize productivity, rather than just arbitrarily forcing yourself to do it every single day.

I think for me, I take the advantage of being a teacher to apply to at least study once a day. We get a lot of free time during the day with teaching kindergarten because students will sleep for 2 hours or so mid-day so we count that as a 'break' time. So if I was at work, I would just use something like DuoLingo for 10 minutes or practice writing sentences or studying vocabulary in my strange way.

Right now, I have an unusual amount of time. I am in school for a course that requires little homework or outside the class study, but I am by my self, and covid has eliminated in-person social events. So, at first I spent most of my free time on desktop Duolingo, and now I break it up with Swedish tutoring videos, polygot videos, and fun videos that have nothing to do with Swedish as a break. After one more month, I won't have consistent access to the internet, so I expect to switch to extensive reading, saved podcasts and videos, and maybe the gold list method.

Just today I made my schedule for studying the languages I want to learn. I put 3 languages I my week taking into account that one, korean, I do course with a teacher, Spanish is close to my mother language that is Portuguese and I know the basic, and German that I really want to learn. I find the longer I have been learning a language the harder it is to study for long periods of time. Last year I could do 3 hours, but now I can only do 30 minutes to an hour. I still always feel that I need to study as long as possible because I have high expectations (also I'm a perfectionist, its annoying) and also language learning is very therapeutic to me.

I think that setting a specific time definitely doesn't work for me. I just tell myself that before I "relax" and have "fun" I have to hit my language minimums. (Anki, Duo, Reading) and after that I can add bonus stuff if I want.

Hi Lindie: Two days ago I wrote in a life streaming with Seabolt in the chat room that " Afrikaners should learn Dutch at school as a compulsory subject because it was the language of their Motherland and they should keep ties with their roots". You answered me and wrote that you are of the opposite opinion, that unfortunately it was not the right time and place to express your point of view on this matter. I wonder if you would be so kind as to explain why Afrikaners should NOT be taught Dutch at school.

I'm not a polyglot, but I am an American living in Beijing and studying Chinese. I find it incredibly hard work to learn a single language and I am living within an immersive environment and studying several hours a day. I guess my question is whether, by championing being a "polyglot" and learning what seems to be enough of several different languages to introduce yourself (?), do you ever feel like you're being disrespectful of the depth of these languages and the level of effort it takes to actually become fluent? Living here I've noticed the many ways that language and culture are entangled. By forfeiting depth in pursuit of what appears a bit like a parlor trick, do you ever feel like you're depriving yourself of understanding these cultures more deeply?

Hi. I’d like to offer a comment. First, I don’t assume what they can or cannot do. I don’t know Mari, but Lindie is from a country with 11 national languages. Living in that kind of environment makes multilingual seem natural. Her starting point is different from those of us coming from monolingual societies. Lindie also shows in other videos that she reads books in the language, watches tv in the language and communicates with native speakers online or in person. Immersion might be the best way to truly know a culture and language - and she is living immersed in the culture of one of her languages currently - but immersion is not available to everyone. Even without immersion, it is entirely possible to reach a conversational level. There is a contest on a language site this week and so I’ve had conversations in 6 languages and they are all about the relationship between economy, education and the pandemic. All the while, I work in an environment where I use English and Japanese every day. Just because I do multiple languages doesn’t mean I can’t get a fair amount of depth. Second, I find it hard to recommend not to study a language based on the fact that you will not get to know every nook and cranny of the language and culture. By the same token, shouldn’t we start a second language after we have learned everything about our own language and country? And I think if we are going to go down that road, we might as well throw in not participating in other cultures unless we are committed to going all the way. Don’t eat sushi unless you are willing to learn the entire culinary history of Japan. I think we also would have trouble in several sectors if everybody spoke a maximum of two languages. For example, I worked with the Olympics in 2016 and my department saw every territory that came to the games. The lowest number of languages anyone in that room spoke was three. The average was five. If we instead only had people speaking two languages our staff would have to triple and there are several multinational organizations that would face similar problems. Third, I would never assume that my experience is everyone’s experience. You find learning Chinese while immersed difficult (ironically Lindie is also immersed in Chinese and finding it difficult) so you assume that everyone has the same amount of trouble with any language they learn. I personally think Chinese is grammatically the easiest language I have ever studied and it’s a walk in the park for me. I am not going to invalidate your experience because I love how easy Chinese is when I constantly have to fight with Portuguese. Fourth, there are a lot of specifics of your situation that you are not considering. The United States Foreign Service Institute runs courses for Americans going abroad on official US business. The courses for French and Spanish are relatively short, about 6 months, I think. Chinese, along with Japanese, Korean and Arabic, are about a year and a half long. The difference represents the difference in time it takes a native English speaker to grasp grammatical concepts, writing systems, etc. So, you are learning a language that takes longer for English speakers. Also, the longer you do something, the better you get at it. I learned French and Spanish simultaneously as a teen and that was hard. However, once I got it I knew what I needed to do get myself to the stage that I could watch tv with no subtitles, read classical literature, interact with people in the countries, conduct business, etc. Since all my languages (bar Korean, my personal kryptonite) have been easier. I can’t compare learning my 8th language to my 2nd and 3rd. How can I compare someone else’s 8th language to my 2nd? Finally, I would not presume to tell everyone they must have the same motivations. What if an amateur historian chose to study languages to access the world’s history as seen by different countries? As someone who has attended history class in 3 countries and 2 languages, I have seen the same incident presented in almost opposite lights. So I could understand why the historian might want to read that. But should we then say to this historian, “Everyone who learns a language must learn writing, reading, listening and speaking in equal measure and also, they should learn everything about a culture. So never mind that you are trying to learn the history of the world, you should also study economic policy and modern dance.” I consider myself a plurilinguist more than a polyglot, but I do speak several languages. I do not consider it disrespectful to any of them. In fact, I think I have great respect for the whole world, by wanting to learning more about as many cultures as possible. And that doesn’t mean that you are being disrespectful because there is a whole world and you are only learning about one country, culture, and language. We both are showing our respect, just in differently ways.

No body, me having to learn 3 languages: Spanish because I’m being pressured by my Hispanic side of my family to learn it, French because of school and I need to learn a language in school and Spanish isn’t available in my school, and sign language because I want to learn it
