Since he is a time traveler (which is totally awesome) you could always add some subtle steampunk or scifi elements. Not super bold, but just enough to hint that there is more to his ship than just your typical seafaring vessel.

So far looks really good. So some ship building and FYI info. Wooden ships were built with the wide boards and ropes soaked in tar or pitch were forced between boards to help waterproof the hull. Antique wooden furniture would have water damage and rot/loss to the feet from moping floors with soapy water and would stay wet from the environment and lack of direct sunlight Cleanliness would depend on if the ship were a military ship, a touring vessel or a merchant ship. When you started talking about the captain being a time traveler I immediately thought of the Doctor Who Christmas Special - Voyage of the Damned from 2007. Here's a link to the Episode description: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyage_of_the_Damned_(Doctor_Who) Check out some of the visuals of the episode if you can.

🤣😂I still have all of my drafting tools from collage too they have been used in my quilting and many of my other hobbies 😹😹 I enjoyed this and loved the idea of a time traveler 😊there is o book in my ebook of a time traveller who uses on old fob watch to travel 😹😹😹 Lol my Grandpa started life as a cabinboy on old sailing ships and one of the jobs the men would have to do is scrubbing the decks to keep them from going slick as their lives depended on this, Grandpa’s job was to scrub the captains quarters 😊😊😊 along with serving the captains along with keeping the Captains quarters clean and tidy along with his clothes and boots and such like.when I lived in the UK we would sometimes go to visit some of the old sailing ships that are kept for the public to go and see and even today they still scrub the timber floors as this also helps to keep them from rotting away

Drafting tools come in handy for so many things don't they?? I have quite a ruler collection subsequently lol! Bentley House Minis lol yes like you have all sorts of different types of rules drafting, quilting and dressmaking as well as I spent 4 years at collage learning all about pattern drafting lol ummm I did not realise until now how many trades I have under my belt😳😜😹😹in my youth I spent a lot of it studying and working going to part time day collage and night school I’m glad you liked my family history Grandpa did not talk about his time during the war as he was a merchant sea Captain who ran the blockades to get food into the UK during that time but he loved talking about his time on the old sailing ships I learnt a many odd things from him including the very old saying “so cold it freezes the balls of a brass monkey” 😹😹😹 a brass monkey was in fact a triangle of brass in which the cannon balls would sit on which would keep them in a neat pile of balls but when they went through freezing temperatures the canonballs would be squeezed of the triangle and roll all over the deck 😹😹😹😹😹 he would have all us grandchildren rolling around laughing about it😹😹 I was just thinking as I read what you have written lol rather than use a old fob watch it should be an old (N,E,S,W) thingbob sorry dyslexic got in the way and I could not remember the order of the letters for the name of it😏😏 I love spell checker as it helps me a lot but this time it just would not play nice with me😿 as he is a sea captain it would be in better keeping using one of them rather than a watch a bit like Captain Jack Sparrow’s one when he showed him the direction of what he desired most at the time but in your case it will take your Sea Captain back and Firth between times🤣😂

I'm always amazed when I see the finished process as to how you arrived at the technique you use. The texture on the walls looks very convincing...so much easier I imagine than using real wood and scratching the heck out of it. I saw on another you tube channel someone using foam core for structures, reinforcing the joins with sewing pins inserted while the glue was wet, maybe even dipping them in glue first. I would caution to use stainless pins to avoid rusting. Tooth picks would probably work as well but may be harder to put in. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing more of the Captain's Quarters as it develops.

Hi Ara, if you make this into a wall hanging then you can create a sort of diorama and include a scenery background and leave the entire back unfinished. Just a thought. I like the idea of a time traveler then you can include decor and objects from other centuries and not be tied to a specific time period. Wouldn’t it be cool to include a time machine in the lower floor where you are putting your mini ships? This project has such great creative possibilities!🤪👍🏻
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea but I am thinking the whole thing may end up being too big to hang :( Maybe if I had done it in half scale but this guy is gonna be huge! Bigger than the Fairfield I am thinking😲 But that would def help hide the 'ugliness' of the unfinished back... hmmmm...

Cant wait to see this all come together! I took a nautical anthropology class in college and I think I still have one of two of the books. Hi! You are so creative and inventive! I've really enjoyed your videos. I was wondering if you could answer a question, opinion really... I have a dollhouse I'm building from a kit and I need to modify the 2nd floor... the kit comes with a loft and I want a full floor. I was going to use foam core, tear off the paper from one side and carve a stone floor into it/paint and layer special effects into. Do you think this will work/not warp for a 2nd floor? Or would matboard be better?
@BentleyHouseMinis5 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim! Thank you! I would add the foam board and matboard glued together to help reinforce each other. Foam board can be strong but can bend and break by one accidental blow... matboard can take more of a beating. If you check out the link to my Uncle Fester addition (link is in the description) that video is me adding an extra floor on top of a pre-exisiting house. It might be helpful to you ;)

Most places that frame artwork will have large sheets that you can purchase (but I have heard of some stores that refuse to sell the large sheets which is a bummer). You can definitely experiment with some poster paper... it may warp a little bit more than the matboard would have but it's worth a try 👍
