Creating mock scrapes on your property is one of the easiest improvements you can install you increase your chances this coming hunting season. The deer herd uses scrapes to communicate with one another throughout the entire year, and by creating a mock scrape you are telling the deer exactly where to communicate. In this video we not only discuss why deer use scrapes but also where and how to place them, how many you should have on your property and finally how to create a mock scrape.

Even if your buck fawn disperses the following year, he should make a return visit to your property/scrape location (if he survives) sometime later in life. Enjoyed your video presentation once more. Thanks for posting.

That’s another great point and good reason to try to get the fawns involved in the scraping! Thanks again for the comment. Enjoy the holiday weekend!

❤ Perfect timing. I’ve been working on my mock scrapes this weekend here in Virginia. Already had a bachelor group of 4 bucks checking out a new grape vine scrape the day after I made it. I really enjoy your videos. Keep ‘em coming!

I swear by mock scrapes. I'm in Michigan also. Lake Ann area. I use jackpine for licking branches. Just because I haven't been able to find a decent grapevine. What do you think about the horizontal scrape method? A little harder to duplicate, being we can't use screws or anything like that. Just curious. Good luck!

I think you might be confusing scraps and rubs. Is there such a thing as a "horizontal scrap"? If so please explain.

@@ArnoldandSonsExteriors lol, that's funny. Okay, from my experience and what I know. There are three scrape methods. Traditional adding a licking Branch method. Then there is the method of using a rope, to throw over a high branch, and tie a vine, or branch, softer wood preferred and/or some just use a piece of rope. Be mindful that it's two to three inches thick. The part that hangs down for the deer. And then there is the third method, horizontal if you wish to call it that. You use a log, 3 to 5 in wide by 3 to 5 ft long. Hang it 3 to 4 ft off the ground by using Posts at each end, like a y post set up. The Middle Post being softer wood, like Aspen, poplar or something. The end post should be hardwood or anything you want. Dear have used this method as a scrape and rub. All have been around for a while and they all work well. Hope this helps you!😉

Are mock scrapes considered baiting? I hunt public land and was curious about this.

baiting” usually means you can’t use anything that the deer can ingest.

When your button buck matures he'll be living 2 to 5 miles away

Yeah you’re right, a lot of times the buck fawns are getting kicked out. Unless mom gets shot then he’s much more likely to stick around. But the thought process is still the same, when a new deer comes into the area whether that’s a fawn or a yearling buck whose dispersed, they are conditioned to communicate at the perennial scrape since that’s the only spot they’ve ever known in that area. Each year the scrapes get stronger.
