How to get a clean line against a wooden beam or other surface that won't crumble away.

I know this is a men’s world. But right now I am mudding and taping my husbands shop and he said that I’m as close to a pro as he ever hired. I have very much taken all the lessons from this channel and put it to actual real life. I really appreciate this lesson cause there is couple of exposed boards that I want to mud very careful around. Thank you once again!!

I have worked years in different construction fields. While not a lot of women, I have had some and they were great. So do not think because it is "man's world" you are discluded or be overwhelmed. I mean if men naturally rocked at this stuff we wouldn't have awesome channels like this or company training. We all have to learn. And these guys make it look easy. Since, like you, it is not a pro job I go slow and slow layer (usually too thick) and sand off at the end. Did I take a lot of time, yeah. My background is electrical and telcom/datacom. So I took more time but using stuff I learned from channels like this I got pretty got results. To the point I look at stuff I did off what I thought with no knowledge and am now happy I am going to be opening up those walls again for electrical and can finish it way better. I love to see/hear of women doing construction style stuff. Heck I use my kids to pull wire and install electrical outlets, not like different genitalia makes them incapable and I was able to replace every switch/outlet in my house in 2 days because my girls rock.

Haha I wish you had done this video years ago. Your video where you use the tear away L-bead against a wooden skylight window was the only one I could find 3 years ago when I started exposing ALL of the floor joists and old beams in my farm house. I've now done 3 rooms and learned a lot of the tips you gave in this video through trial and error. I'd love to see how you do a corner with L-bead where 2 exposed beams meet. I've tried several different methods (butting up 2 pieces, cutting both on a 45, creasing one piece and putting a bend in it etc.) but still haven't settled on one that I think is perfect.

Nice save !! Great idea to not remove and fill with mud. I work in mostly older homes, and the varying joist heights are a constant. Thank you for the tip about fiberglass tape to cover the edge of the bead. The clients will be very pleased, I'm sure !

I recently built a kitchen pantry including drywall and mudding work. Your knife control is deceivingly good. I tried the 10" knife and was making such a mess of it that I went back to a 6" and sanded the f out of it. Anyways, your video was informative and entertaining as usual.

Yes as VC noted, shims would have saved me tons of misery. I was brand new to drywall. The bedroom wall that became the backsplash kitchen wall is a mess. I'm having to mud after the new poured-epoxy counter tops are in place. My best brainstorming is to shiplap the wall or maybe large format tile, after I do more corrective mudding.. what a mess.. Shimming the drywall flat would have been so much easier. The correction you made here is very informative. Great video!!!

Flat taping is the cleanest option, run blue tape or frog tape along the beam first so mud from the finishing process can easily be cleaned off or lightly scored with a sharp knife and peeled clean

Great videos. You're the goto expert for my amateur drywall attempts. I have a request. I'm fixing cracks and holes in kitchen drywall between cabinets and counter. Most videos on KZbin are in wide open spaces with no obstacles and mostly new drywall. I'm making a mess around plugs/switches and up against cupboards and counter backslash. Short runs. Do you have a video and if not can I request one (although it will likely be too late this job). Fun fact: I hate sanding 😄

Really enjoy your videos and I have gathered an abundance of good info watching them. I am working on an unusual project that could use your advice. I have a stem wall that my wife wants solid wood on the end face and drywall on the 2 sides. My question, can I apply paper and with metal outside corners and mud and tape right across the wood face without any issues? Will general purpose mud stick and stay on the wood surface? We are just going to paint the surface. Thanks and keep the videos coming!

Thank you so much for this video!! QUESTION: I'm in a house with exposed beams, which were poorly trimmed out (I'll spare you the details). I took off the trim in one room, and have found that the drywall as it abuts the beam is very ragged/uneven. In some places it butts up nearly to the beam; in others, there is a gap of 1/2". Can I fill these large gaps with hot mud, and then use this tearaway bead method, mudding OVER the painted ceiling? Thank you (or anyone else in the comments) for your advice! And thanks again for the video.

I want to do this in my attic. The difference is that I must have like 60-70 beads (not even sure if that’s the name) and they are old, with a rough texture. So I’ll have to sand one by one before anything. Then how will I place insulation and something to nail the sheet rocks onto? Pieces of 2x4? I know nothing about these things, but Im trying to get educated and start doing something by myself

Do you ever wait until the painting is done to remove the tear away bead? I use this a lot when I rock around a new tub/shower install. Then I tear it away after the painting is all done. Its a lifesaver

This was a good one, thank you. I agree that adding the tape spanning the bead leg instead of glue is strong enough, especially in such a not-demanding location. I'm working on window returns that also require "leveling mud"/prefill before adding the same tear-away flat bead. Instead of mud-setting, what do you think of my idea of priming the bead area so that I can use the adhesive?
