Ive enjoyed all the details and photography / narration you give on this conversion I am not in the position to do this conversion at this moment but. I do hope that I'm able to in the future as i like the concept and the final outcome originally i was thinking Vanagan but the more i learn and see. I'm leaning towards the older Buses especially. As more people do them and share their Trials and errors

Hey! For some reason I can't connect to the site. Looking for more information and a walk-through of how to REALLY make your own wiring harness. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, great video series

Nice Job sir I myself am doing a conversion in my 65 bus, but will be using a Microsquirt engine management which does not require you to pull out the entire wiring harness from the car. You basically disconnect the main harness right at the engine and you can leave the rest in the car you then connect the wire the Microssquirt to all the sensors that are on the engine.. I will also be offering this conversion service for anyone who may not have the complete wiring loom from the car or may not want to go through the hassle of pulling it out of the car.

My email address is a914freak@gmail.com I am in the process of working on getting setup to do them on a case by case basis for EJ20 and 25's what engine are you swapping in? Kyle
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Hi Matthew, I am travelling so I stopped producing parts for a little while.RJES supplies parts but they are a quite a bit different than mine. Good luck in your swap and I can let you know when I have kits available again.
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Hi Kyle, I played around with micro squirt a lot. Fun little ECU for sure. What timing trigger do you generally have the least trouble with? I wouldn't recommend Microsquirt for most people though - definitely takes a lot more tuning and computer skills than using the Subaru computer. It's not too hard to pull a Subaru harness either - probably less work than splicing a MIcrosquirt ecu to the Subaru engine harness...
@a914freak9 жыл бұрын
+Busaru I keep the same triggers that came on the motor....I found that if you start swapping components that's when you run into problems. My tuner buddy has never had any issues with microsquirt so as long as all the sensors are the ones that BELONG to that engine.

Mike hi.is it wise to change the vw beetle black 12 volt ignition on coil cable to something more bigger cable.? I ask because the ignition on cable will feed through a bracker bar also other things .

Great videos!! I'm currently in the planning stage of doing the swap on my 74 myself except with a Phase 2 ej22. Your videos are really helping build up my confidence. Would you be able to help me rewire the harness on my 97 Outback sport ej22 phase 2 engine ?
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Thats great! The 97 should have a slightly easier wiring harness to deal with since, I believe, it doesn't have the large connector that you need to cut out and splice the wires. What I would do is get the I/O chart from the factory service manual (Google should have this somewhere), then I'd just plot out what you need to keep and what you can delete. As far as doing the harness, if you need someone to do it for you, Tom Shiels is the man - I'd search for him as he has a good setup to do harnesses.

Great videos. What multigauge are you using?
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Hey William, I wouldn't recommend it. It's too bright at night and doesn't read accurately for oil pressure. The link to the Ebay store is in the gauge video description if you want to check it out though.

+Busaru I didn't see the link but I will probably end up with the MGL EMS E1 gauge.

Love your videos, im about to start my swap from a 92 legacy to a type 1 bug. I'm assuming wiring will be about the same? Great work. Keep it up!

Wiring should be close to the same. You may want to adjust lengths of wires as you see fit though. Cool project!

I'm having a heck of a time trying to get my reverse lights to work with this swap. Any advice?
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Nothing to do with engine swap. There is a manual switch near front of trans that tells lights to turn on/off. Look for switch, test, then check wiring to lights.

@sofakingsick8610 жыл бұрын
Just a quick question where did you get to wiring diagram. Thanks
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian, The KEP wiring diagram is pretty sweet but only pertains to 90-94 ECU's. It is a giant blueprint showing all of the connectors and how to wire them in life size. I bought mine for $20 about 8 years ago so it may have been updated. This is just a general guideline and it isn't terribly necessary to follow completely, just a good starting point if you've never done one before. If you have a newer model, I'd recommend find the I/O chart (Google) for your particular model year ECU and use the pinout on that to find all the necessary connectors. At some point I may do a more in depth wiring harness video but I'm starting to lean toward Megasquirt conversions instead - there is a lot more adjustably.
@sofakingsick8610 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm getting ready to build the whole wiring harness for the 1969 bug out of the legacys wiring harness with fuse panel and relays.
@vwsubisquare36777 жыл бұрын
Why do you remove the big grey connector? Is it more just to save space or does in need to be removed? Just curious as I am trying to build a wire harness for my 72 Squareback and my donor is a 92 Legacy.
@Busaru7 жыл бұрын
+Subaru Swapped Late Model Squareback EJ22 You can leave it, it's just not a very clean arrangement in my opinion. Plus, eliminating the big grey plug gives you some good soldering practice ;)
@vwsubisquare36777 жыл бұрын
Busaru I agree just wasn't sure. Do you have other walk through video on the obd1? I have a wire going from the engine plug to the fuse block in the car. I want to remove the fuse panel like you do but I have no idea where to connect the solid yellow wire after I remove the fuse block. Also I have the 3 wire alternator plug where do the 2 smaller wires go?
@Busaru7 жыл бұрын
+Subaru Swapped Late Model Squareback EJ22 You may consider checking out the factory service manual regarding the alt wiring - it'll help clarify a lot of things. You can find links to them on my website: Busaru.com Is the solid yellow wire for ignition on or battery?
@vwsubisquare36777 жыл бұрын
Busaru I am not sure. Is the a engine plug pin out? I know it comes from one of the 2 engine plugs and ended at the fuse block but not sure where after that. I am guess most have felt with this as everybody removes the fuse block. I wish I could post a picture.
@Busaru7 жыл бұрын
+Subaru Swapped Late Model Squareback EJ22 it sure sounds like either ignition on or battery. Use the ecu pinout or service manual to double check.

Do you have to have a harness from the same year as the engine? I have 96 2.5 dohc engine and 01 harness and computer. Will it work together?
@Busaru10 жыл бұрын
Generally you want to keep things VERY similar as the sensors changed plug design and wire placements. I think you might run into problems to be honest. I would check on the Subaru forums to see what problems you might run into - that'd be a much better resource than the VW swap community (at this point). Good luck and I hope it works out!

I have a legacy 94 automatic and a 77 vw bus manual transmission and I would like to know if I can use the harnnes and pcm for this project
@Busaru8 жыл бұрын
You most certainly can, you will have to tell the computer that it is now in a manual trans car though. Review the ecu pinout to find the trans ID pin.

awesome video(s) great layout how everything was explained, but this right here is whats holding me back from putting subie power in my railbuggy, plus trying to find an obd1 legacy donor car is kinda hard around here in ohio, well at least one that runs fair for a good price.
@Busaru9 жыл бұрын
Go for a newer donor car. The obd2 engines and harnesses are great - just a few more sensors but it's really not a big deal.
@dustinnist75489 жыл бұрын

hey bro... well my 82 Vanagon L conversion to 91 Subaru 2.2L Legacy L motor has finally developed some wiring issues. Really can't complain as the conversion was done about 10 years ago. I would like to keep the 2.2L engine as the compression is excellent and no smoke and no leaks. My question is (1) what years/models are compatible with 91 Subaru Legacy L as far as donor wiring harness, and (2) if I change the ECU along with the matching wiring harness does year/model really matter, as long as it is from a 2.2L?
@Busaru8 жыл бұрын
+B.J. Boyette Well, If I was going to upgrade harnesses then I'd probably look for a 95+ ecu and full harness, that way I could get OBD2 functionality. The timing equipment switched over around 2001 so I would stay older than that. A 2.5 harness will work but stick with 2.2 if possible. Good luck!

Probably not - JDM and USDM Harness pinouts are much different. The ecu connectors are quite a bit different too.

The workaround is getting a USDM Harness and ecu - that’s the ticket to OBD2 with a JDM engine.

hi Mik.my alternator Hitachi (from legacy 1992 japan import) is what with the round plug but with 4 wires. the yellow one (IG) that it goes through ignition relay and fuel pump relay to B12 in the ecu pin out , the white one called S (signal) the black one (L) alternator light and one more that is green with black stripe (D) and it goes to the ECU at D.21 pin out. i know that the 99.9999% subaru ej 22 from legacy 1990-4 also have the round plug alternator but with 3 wires (white - yellow - and black) .My ECu is JDM labelled G2 22 611 AA950. After hundreds of hours surfing in net in many subaru forums noone could give an answer what is the purpose of this green (D) wire and why is connected to the ecu?( i want to make an upgrade with an newer 2 or 3 plug Alternator and i want to know that if i cut away this green wire will affect the Ecu and the Engine . iknow also that with the upgrade must cut also the yellow one wire ). Thanks.
