Importing the alembic file to C4d and rendering it using Arnold: 34:47
In this tutorial we learn how to create the same Mograph setup in both Cinema 4d and Houdini, if you are a Cinema 4d user looking ahead to learn Houdini, this tutorial can show you the very different approach Houdini and Cinema 4d take to content creation.
First we create the setup in cinema 4d and render it using Arnold Renderer, then we move to Houdini and create a very similar setup there as well, the last thing we do is to export the Houdini scene back to Cinema 4d using alembic, adjust the shaders using the point data we got from Houdini and render it using Arnold again.

Is there an older analog of the Distance from geometry node in Houdini16? Unfortunately, I can not find the information.
@Mographplus
@Mographplus 4 жыл бұрын
"Attribute Transfer" node... Create an attribute under the "Grid", name it "mask" for example... set it's value to 0. Create the same "mask" attribute under the "sphere", set it's value to 1. Use an "Attribute Transfer" node and transfer the "mask" attribute from the sphere to the grid, set "distance threshold" to 0 and "blend width" to around 5 to 5.5. Add a "Point Wrangler" after the attribute transfer node and type in: @mask = chramp("Mask_Ramp", @mask); and this will create the curve to adjust the mask values.... you can use a color node to visualize the mask.

@@Mographplus Thank you very much for your reply! Yes, I know Attribute Transfer. The "Distance from geometry" node looks more functional (for a similar task), I suggested that there is an alternative in older versions. =)

The only thing is that once you set it up once in Houdini you can use it again without much setup at all. Plus you can customize the tools anyway you want. That being said it really boils down to the kind of work you do and if that extra control is worth it for you!

I think the best way to compare Houdini to any other 3d software package is to now task everyone to try to make 1.000.000 different (randomized) mographs in each of these software .... that's the part where most other 3d software get stroke
@Handcraftedcc
@Handcraftedcc 4 жыл бұрын
@@jancabal84 True. I think one way to think about it is comparing it to the process of building a car. Most 3D software will give you prebuilt elements you can use and modify to the degree they allow you. For example they might give you a wheels and a fuel engine and a some seats and let you change the thickness off the wheels and what color the paint is and what kind of seat material you want. And while Houdini gives you some (actually a whole lot) of those prebuilt tools also it also gives you relative easy access to the most basic parts of those Elements, like the rubber you can use to make tires and the metal used to make the motor, the paint and the tools to forge it all together. So if you wanted to build the same thing as the prebuilt packages, sure those are a lot easier. But if you want to do any task that's out side of their options, for example building an electric car, or even a helicopter for the analogies sake, it gets pretty awkward. In Houdini you can generally build anything you can set your mind to and not only that you can build your own prebuilt templates and tools and modify them if you need (or download them online from other people that built them). Once you get how it works it's pretty hard to go back. Oh and also, let's say you're modeling something and half way through you realize you messed up and for ex. didn't extrude something far enough but you already beveled it all so it would be a mess to fix it manually, in houdini you can just go back to that node that managed that extrusion and change the value and bam the change updates all the way through. Also i'm very sorry for this long piece of text. Hope this was valuable to someone!

@@Handcraftedcc I can appreciate the simplicity of C4d, however lending my perspective coming from Softimage ICE and trying to learn Houdini (which are similar), is that yes it is harder initially however the control you have is far, far greater. It isn't for everyone, that is for sure.

I just want those UI abilities on Cinema 4D.... as probably all you experienced GPU renderers' IU problems. They are terrible. for example node controls. connecting two nodes after 1 hour makes your eyes blind and your hands shake. Arnolds' UI is desperate. Forget to connect node ports each other, sometimes only trying to view them as you wished is so hard. C4D's lates node control UI is much more better than before. But changing some node's parameters on node itself is a huge simplicity.

Houdini is just amazing and I wish I could force myself to learn more about it, especially the rigid and soft-body dynamics. But DAMN is it tough to feel like you "know" the program. @mannywiebe
@mannywiebe 3 жыл бұрын
Houdini is td focused and its power comes from its proceduralism. The company that made it (SideFX) has not sold their company to a larger one yet like autodesk. This tells us they have no interest in paying out yet. Where as Maya is enterprise focused, but its a mess now cuz autodesk bought it from Alias and autodesk doesn't care they just want money

This video doesn't convince me in the slightest that I should use Houdini over C4D. Especially with the Fields options and ability to draw mask curves in C4D as well as get instant and fast animation feedback, there is absolutely no reason to create this kind of setup in Houdini - especially if you are going back to render it in C4D anyways. And the logic of Houdini still makes very little sense to me. I've spent hours with the software and I can see its strengths and power, but it is still a massively confusing mess. Comparing C4D and Houdini is like compare visual web design to Javascript/C++. Even though Houdini is easier than doing everything in code, you have to have a "programmer" brain to understand the logic, something which I don't and never will have.
@supaflykai
@supaflykai 3 жыл бұрын
This frustrates me so much about Houdini. In a lot of ways it's great, but in many more ways it leaves me asking WHY!? It can do basically anything, but in order to get it to do that thing you need to go through a convoluted illogical process. It kind of reminds me of Zbrush's interface. There's no reason for it, that's just the way it is, and they ain't changin it!!
@James-pb8xu
@James-pb8xu 3 жыл бұрын
You won't have a "programmer mind" because you choose not to. It's uncomfortable and unnecessary in your eyes. C4D is about ease of use. Houdini is about control. A simple program is easier to understand than a more powerful one.
@kuunami
