The mix design you use for making fake rocks from concrete could be as basic as 2 parts sand to 1 part cement and mixed with water, all the way up to and including engineered mix designs which contain water reducers and super plasticizers, reinforcement fibers, acrylic latex, densified silica fume, fly ash and potentially many more components. In this video we will be working with a basic, affordable but high performance mortar mix for artificial rock sculpting.

a less expensive method for imprinting/ texuring is to use aluminum foil, newspaper, or even crumpled up plastic bags.

Your videos are great. The way you articulate the process, picking apart any hiccups or obstacles- and then demonstrate from start to finish- Describing texture and sensation - and speaking of how the eye picks up on repetition as being unnatural as a tiny example… incredibly thoughtful and thorough. New fav channel. I’ll be singing your praises.

What I get from this lesson are the tools and techniques to make much more than a rock. I’m thinking that’s your point!

in place of your pva (glue) id like to give you another freebie idea.... i made huge boulders to go around my koi pond outdoors ... we of course used a cement mixer because we made our boulders with 2 80 pound bags and had a couple stones going at one time.... you can use latex paint .... yup old unused even colorful paint... because it doestnt paint the stone it is mixed in the cement even bright vivid purple wont be purple when mixed in and you get the added benefit of some natural color pigments in the rock to give it a tone.... the boulders are super strong they have been in place for 15 years exposed to the kansas elements year round.... you wont have to use any concrete sealer the latex paint does it all anf fortifies it and water proofs it as well.... i also used chicken wire its way cheaper and very forgiving for forming around indentations and you can twist the wires around each other to secure instead of all the roofing nails ..... no other fortifiers were used ... i also used some miscelaneous colored grout i had on hand that needed to be used up to just throw on as a dusting and the grout pigment soaks into the fresh concrete and provides more pigment .... everything looks like earth tones when mixed with cement or concrete....

I'm a tile guy that does masonry...I'd waste a set of gloves, use my hands, and pack mass mortar on in seconds...then grab the margin trowel, and sculpt

Great video and instructions. I attempted to do this on a small sample but mine ended up with a really gritty surface even though I used AAA fine sand. Should my sand be even finer?

Thanks. I'm excited to try to make some things with sculpting mortar after learning these techniques. This is awesome! I studied pottery but i don't have a kiln. I was wishing there was some kind of 'miracle' clay that would set all by itself without needing a kiln. Ha ha ha. You must imagine my bewilderment when the simple idea of concrete hit me.

I just need to avoid getting stuck with a 600lb object I can't move, which I've heard have happened to some people with concrete.

Yes, concrete is a great sculpting medium. Maybe not perfect, and has limitations, but ultimately works well, is reliably strong and cheap to buy and use. Indeed, many early projects will be very heavy since it takes practice to get the mix design and thickness of your piece right without being overkill.

I'm still trying to figure out my best sculpting mediums. I've covered very fragile plaster casts with a thin layer of Liquitex modeling pastes, totally changing the fragile plaster. (Although I've discovered acrylic paint projects are very fragile, like glass, in cold temps). I've even foregone any modelling medium, & just directly applied the liquitex modeling paste to styrofoam & amazingly it created a solid form (a cloud based large frame for a 2D-3D picture). I'm trying to figure out which medium to use when/ where. One obvious difference is the possibility to create outdoor sculpture if I use concrete. But i might also want to use it even for indoor sculpture. So - if projects would just be indoor sculptures, and fragility is more acceptable... do you have any particular videos you've made that you can recommend that would help me gain knowledge in this regard? I wonder about possibilities like modelling something in a light weight cement, and then coating it in liquitex modelling medium (which is acrylic paint with marble dust added)... some kind of light weight option, that allows modeling, but then that I can strengthen with outer coats? Do you have any ideas what might be the best route to start concrete work with such goals in mind, or any of your videos to recommend?

@@cchemmes-seeseeart3948 I am really not sure what I have that will help you get there. Almost everything I make is done with one, uniform concrete pour for maximum strength. It is possible to go in layers, even differing materials, but so far this is not a subject I have much content on

Would adding PVA glue to regular concrete make it stronger? Like, would it be of benefit to just add it to every concrete project?
@Swimmingpoolsteve
@Swimmingpoolsteve Жыл бұрын
pretty much except there are concerns for conflicting chemicals in the mix design if there are other admixtures as well. Also, I use acrylic / latex as an admixture a lot more than PVA as it seems to be more useful and complimentary to more mix designs.
