And your guest went ont explain, very nicely, I might add, exactly that. I was stunned actually. #askPaulogia Aren't these people PhDs?? Also, we are broadcasting signals so that ours may be discovered by whomever out there. And who knows, by the time it is discovered, we may be long gone. Ken is soooo narrow minded. PS. I might come back to edit this comment, but I do hope you read it. 😁

One of the problems with Titan that is not mentioned often is temperature. It's very very cold there. And chemistry is slower when it's cold. So if there is any life there, it's probably happening in extreme slow motion. Replicating not every hour but every year, who knows? The problem is even greater if the degradation reactions that return more complex molecules to their starting products or to useless side products are less hindered by cold than then synthesis reactions. Also a nitpick on the lithotrophes: they don't eat inorganic material per se. When we eat for example sugar, we get both biomass from this food and energy by burning it. Sugar or protein or fat is both the material and the fuel. With chemolithotrophes, the redox reactions don't use ATP generated by the Krebs cycle, but they use these redox reactions with minerals to directly excite electrons. This resembles photosynthesis, but instead of solar photons, it's a mineral redox reactions that brings an electron to a high energy state, which then goes across the electron transport chain, causing a proton gradient that ATPases then use to make ATP from ADP and Pi, which powers the cell. It's more like photosynthesis than our eating. We don't say plants eat sunlight, they eat air (and a bit of soil) and use sunlight to do interesting stuff with it, like growing. Lithotrophes will still need to eat biomolecules, but instead of sunlight they use the power of rusting minerals. You need to energy to survive, but energy alone cannot make you grow. They still need a source of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen etc.

"Hi, I'm Ken Ham" "And I'm Georgia 'Child Abuser' Purdom" *"And we have no freaking concept of the unfathomable size of the universe or the limitations of space travel and speeds attainable by objects!"* "That's right, Georgia! Which is why we think a signal sent by aliens should arrive immediately and are confused by why aliens would be dead! Because we're fucking _dumb!"_
@umachan92866 жыл бұрын
The biggest problem we face in terms of getting a signal from another civilization is whether or not we're listening in on the right frequency. Currently, because it's such a big sky and there's a whole bunch of frequencies we could be listening to, we focus on one frequency only. And that's the frequency based off the hydrogen atom because hydrogen makes up some ridiculously high percentage of the universe. So we imagine that aliens would do the same thing. But suppose instead of that, they take a different view and instead send out or listen to messages based on the frequency of carbon because they and all other races they know are carbon based. Think about it like this. When you're in your car and you're driving along you turn on the radio and you shuffle through the stations you like. There is radio chatter going on all around you but if you're only listening to 97.7 Rock then you won't ever catch any of the other stations out there. We could literally be receiving signals from them right now but because we're listening on the wrong wavelength we'll never hear it.

@jester_19736 жыл бұрын
Um... Why wouldn't the signal be coming from our own galaxy? There was a point when we could not broadcast radio. Then we could. There could be a civilization out in the very next Earth-like planet over which might be sending it's first signal today. We'd get that when it reaches us in however long that takes from today. The planet could easily be within the Milky Way.

I think the funniest thing is that some early Christian theologians (I don't remember his name exactly but I remember reading it, forgive me) said that it was unbiblical to believe that there were men on the other side of the world, as Jesus would then have to go and die for them as well. Any time I hear Ken Ham bring up his aliens argument, I always think of that, and how insanely wrong they were.

The modern Roman Catholic Church recognizes the possibility of intelligent life on other worlds. Some theologians, recognizing that the aliens would never have heard of Christ, proposed that God would make provision to redeem them as well. I think the discussion of the "98% Chimp DNA" thing missed the point. AiG is absolutely right that this number depends on how you count. It's like saying that bible manuscript A has 98% of the text of manuscript B. Do two spelling differences on one page count as one page difference or two spelling differences? If two pages are different because they start on different characters, but are otherwise the same, is that a difference? What matters is not the number 98% but that by using consistent methods across comparisons that we will come to a realistic RELATIVE set of differences -- so that we can see that we are more closely related to chimps than to gorillas, to gorillas than to giraffes, and to giraffes than to gila monsters.

I don't agree with Christians who think that life can't exist elsewhere. The Bible is concerned with human life and salvation it doesn't concern itself with other worlds nor is there much reason to assume it would. a tad like saying if we cant live underwater, nothing can live underwater, to be honest. humans arent really the final arbiter of where something can or cant live. the question is more whether or not it did develop, are there the same sufficent chemicals, systems, and temperature ranges to bring about life like there was on earth. things can live in deep space, theoretically, its just utterly strange to think that something would just happen to develop there. wherever there is a thermodynamic energy differential, free energy that needs to be dissipated, life can theoretically exist in some odd form or another, even if only after being put there by some other life in some odd experiment. its entirely a question of whether or not its likely to have developed

The drake equation.... Right, here's the secularist's assumption, and it's a BIG assumption - if you've got a math problem that describes the chance of life outside of earth, and if the math says that it's possible, then it MUST be possible... WRONG! And here's why. Robert J. Smith, a mathematics professor at the University of Ottawa, in publishing a book entitled “Mathematical Modeling of Zombies” (University of Ottawa Press, 2014) developed mathematical formulae to describe the rate of zombie transmission within a population… OK, so he’s got a math formula that works, does that automatically make it correct, or even real? Obviously, no. The U.S. Center for Disease Control has a "Zombie Apocalypse" plan because "If you are generally well equipped to deal with a zombie apocalypse you will be prepared for a hurricane, pandemic, earthquake, or terrorist attack." Although epidemiology is an important field of study, using a fictional "zombie virus" to illustrate how quickly an illness can become a global pandemic as an exercise in the mathematical principle of epidemiology is not without problems. Because zombies are fictional, everyone makes assumptions about them. Is it a virus? Are they just monsters? Are they cursed into being zombies? Is it magic? It all depends on who you ask, so if a scientist assumes that zombification is accomplished through a virus, then he can develop mathematics along those lines. The same is true of our origins and things like exo-life. What assumptions are being made that directed the mathematics of those who would make claims to that which can never be observed? The math must stack up to reality, otherwise you are using a calculator with the same skill as a writer who uses a pen to draft a work of fiction. It is wrong to calculate something, get a result and say, "This is how the world works." because you are ignoring the fact that everything is made up of real matter. You can't separate that fact or you will end up in trouble. The calculations must stack up to observable reality.

Let's see if I can give a super-layman explanation of earth life vs alien life. Earth is the Brazillian Rainforest for this example, and humanity is the Jaguar. Also, for this example, we're ruling out human inteference until otherwise noted. A Jaguar could wonder if, somewhere outside its rain forest, other big cats exist. And, in fact, they do. Over in India, there are Tigers in a similar environment. In Africa, there are lions, living in a different environment, but still big cats. In America, we have Pumas. These cats exist out there, but they will never meet. Asia and Africa are just too far away for the big cats to reach Brazil, and the Jaguar likewise can't go there. A Puma could conceivably walk the distance or vice versa, but the environments in between would be too hostile to adapt to, and they would run out of supplies and be unable to replenish themselves. Likewise, it might take longer than their lifespan to reach each other. Now, if there are some vast technological advances (humans with planes), these big cats could all conceivably meet in one place, but as they are now, it's impossible. This also imagines that other life out there is neccessarily another tropical big cat. What if the Jaguar instead wonders if something like a Polar bear exists? The Jaguar likely can't comprehend a creature being able to survive in conditions that would kill it in minutes, but polar bears thrive in the arctic. What about the idea of an anglerfish? The gist of this example is, just because life is out there, it doesn't mean we're capable of reaching each other, or even comprehending each other.

What's sad is that Dr Purdom actually made a better job explaining the Scott Kelly genetic expression story than most media outlets, including some that really should know better. At least, up to her comments on human / chimp DNA similarities. Most stories would make you think that 7% of Scott's DNA was changed, which would leave him in pretty bad shape.

Thanks once again! My girlfriend, a cradle atheist does not yet comprehend why I get Hulk-like when I encounter the bullshit of Hamonism!Recently during an AA meeting I had all of my buttons pushed and went after the whole “god” concept. The end result was that a small group wanted to write AA central and have me banned from meetings.Of course it didn’t work, but I am happy I found Freethinker/Agnostic/Atheist meetings. Anyway, happy to have found you along with all of your stunning guests. I am inspired to keep my own investigation of this magnificent universe ongoing while attempting to hold back the uprising tide of the Christian Sharia from our amazing continent.

Georgia, in response to possible life on Titan: an unenthusiastic "woohoo"... I'd be stoked. But guess it'll be complicating their lives somewhat.. WOOHOO!

great video as always(my only "complaint" is that Scientist Mel's avatar made her look like a 70 year old woman with wild, dyed-red hair. it almost reminded me of the old lady in "Requiem For A Dream" after she started going crazy. lol.I was quite surprised to see what she actually looks like.

Ken Ham and his followers are the kind of Christians who will take anything science says that they deem even _remotely_ related to (their concept of) "evolution", and then proceed to mock it and try to discredit it (mainly through mockery), no matter how innocuous or interesting that scientific finding might be. They are essentially conspiracy theorists who think that science is always trying to push the "evolution" agenda in everything, and thus it's Ken's duty to "expose" it, ridicule it and try to discredit it. Of course he often shows his deep dishonesty in doing this, as he will often distort what the scientific finding is saying, in order to be able to ridicule it. In other words, it's textbook straw-manning.

Excellent. I hope PhD giggles is embarrassed by the real science as presented by a real scientist like Mel.

Ken doesn't believe that Titan has life on it because he doesn't believe in evolution. If we do find life on Titan, he might 1)Rethink his holy book or 2)Be a Titan-life denier, since he is a young Earther XD

Considering it is believed the Earth was much like Titan in its infancy, AND that stromatolites, methane eating, oxygen producing bacteria are thought to have terraformed our own planet and given us our oxygen atmosphere, maybe Titan could be Earth like in a couple billion years... of course, d ok me method for heating the atmosphere would be required.

What we know is lifeforms developed and evolved on an earth-like planet that, for whatever reason, evolved the ability to potentially survive in entirely hostile environments. What we haven't determined, to the best of my knowledge, is whether a lifeform can develop from the components found in the aforementioned hostile environments. A critical misdirection in the argument, as far as I'm concerned, as we have no way of postulating how such a lifeform might both evolve and transport itself to a distant body. Tardigrades evolved on Earth, correct? Hence, we are postulating illogical scenarios. We need to demonstrate that life can form from radically different molecules and carbon or, perhaps, silicon configurations that depart radically from our own. Otherwise, we are participating in exercises of futility. Let's stay focused, people.

Ken Ham is not being entirely truthful, not that comes as any surprise. "You see the Bible makes it clear that Adam's sin affected the whole Universe, that means any aliens would also be affected by Adam's sin but as they are not Adam's descendants, they can't have salvation". Ken Ham.

Ol’ Ken must be getting a little desperate. I actually saw a commercial for the Ark Encounter the other day. What made it even better was I was watching the Science Channel😂😂😂

The arrogance of Ham and his little minions, that they cannot entertain the idea that their God may have created other Earth-like planets with their own Adam & Eve beginnings. I guess that wouldn't make them 'special' enough..

we know subatomic particles can be used for information, what are the odds an advanced civilization would use electromagnetic principals for any of it? Has or should the equation been reconsidered?

is it possible to remove Georgia Purdom,s credentials. She obviously doesn't do anything in her field and spreads false information about everything she talks about.

The film 'the Titan' was terrible, if you can modify humans to live on Titan, you could far more easily modify them to live on a post disaster earth, we already live here, we are much closer to Earth's standards than Titans.

Unless the current civilization of alien planets are using an unknown method of communication. Maybe when Elon gets his satellites up it maybe able to get a phantom signal. Or we are the first civilization and all the others have not formed life yet.
