The battery eventually deteriorates. At the bottom, sediment forms which causes a short circuit. This sediment can be washed away and the battery revived. The effect is short-lived because the structure of battery is already damaged. Good in an emergency. I did this myself on my motorcycle. I just washed the battery with plain water because I had no other option and put original acid back in. The battery worked for two days until I got home and bought a new battery.
