Great program...love it :) I just finished the Creative Chemistry 103 where Tim shows the difference between Gelatos and the Distress Crayons also. They are not designed to do the same thing. Distress Crayons are designed to dry, unlike most other water soluble media ie neocolors II, gelatos, Michaels or other watercolor crayons. The DCs smudge well and even blend well with water if you do so quickly after applying them to your substrate. It's necessary to work in small areas and not cover a large area as you have with this piece. Once they have been exposed to the air for several moments they are no longer as workable as they are immediately. They are great for texture when used with stencils as you will get the little ridges of crayon texture where it builds up along the edges of the stencil shapes. The crayons will never be completely water safe or smudge free, and so far the fixatives available on the market don't really work to seal them. That is something that Ranger/Tim are working on to create. But the crayons do stay intact during normal mailing, so any cards that they are used on will remain intact during transit unless the postal service is grossly negligent in handling them. TH loves grungy effects and these crayons were designed to leave a bit of dimension on the surface of your work...smudging them over stenciled modeling pastes, or other dimensional designs on your page will allow the crayon to build up against those raised areas and add to the effect. If you rub a paper towel over the surface after it has dried for awhile, you will see some light color removal, but not anything that you will notice on your work. You need to use a bit of friction to get the color to remove. So they are pretty stable to the touch once they have cured for a bit. Hope that helps to explain the differences that you see between the DC and other aqua crayons and gelatos.

I Googled for the Faber Castell stencils because I bought them online, not realizing they're paper. Ugh, I thought, so I looked for demos and of course stumbled onto yours from Barb's channel. I won't be Gelli stenciling with them soon, but thanks to your tip, I think I may just paint the stencils with acrylic paint so they're water proof. Thank you. Faber Castell recommends painting them with glaze medium, which costs more than the stencils! I think acrylic paint would work as well -- but from now on I'll get off my lazy buns and cut my own stencils with my Cricut. BTW, Amazon has cheap 3rd party blades for the Cricuts that people like. Maybe they also have some for the Brother Scan & Cut...

You aren't using the Distress Crayons correctly. You have to use a lot of pigment and introduce water right away. Unlike Gelatos, Distress Crayons they actually dry. It is best to do small areas at a time and get the water or smudge them out before moving on the the next part. They dry I would say less than a minute or two from my own experience and as you smudge them they dry. But with water they blend beautifully and you can color mix easily. Tim has several videos about using them correctly that he put out right after they were introduced because a lot of people thought they were like Gelatos and were frustrated by them. I think you will like them if you add water quickly and use more pigment. I love the way they watercolor.
