Bath Bomb Basics for Beginners! SIMPLE RECIPE + Molding Tips!

I am sharing a simple & easy bath bomb recipe + tips & tricks on how to mold them.
1 cup (250 grams) baking soda, 1/2 cup (100 grams) citric acid, 1/4 cup (30 grams) corn starch + 1.5 teaspoons (7.5 milliliters fragrance oil), 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) polysorbate 80, & 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 milliliters) surfactant (use any surfactant, I used coco glucoside). You don’t have to add anything else but baking soda & citric acid, but I always add 1/4 cup starch to keep my wet & dry ratios balanced. For the 1/4 cup you can add anything you want! *** You can add more dry ingredients but the more you add, the less vigorous reactions you'll have. Plus, you'll have to adjust the recipe. Sieve dry ingredients together, then whisk them together. WET: I'll share a secret with you! For me, a wetter mix (like 20-25 milliliters) is easier to work with, easier to mold, & holds together better… But the bombs take forever to dry & don't float. For this recipe 15 milliliters is perfect, but you could add up to 20 milliliters (probably even more if the liquid is thick). ***Thick versus thin liquids is noticeable in very small batches or on very large scales. It probably won't make a huge difference in this recipe, but I wanted you to be aware of this. Choose wet ingredients depending on the type of bomb & which reactions you desire. For example, for a heavily scented bomb: 12 milliliters fragrance oil & 3 milliliters emulsifier. Add liquid color (so it doesn't cause reactions) & mica (so it doesn't become airborne) to the wet ingredients. Mix them together. Add wet to dry slowly while whisking, then mix everything together well with your hands. The mixture should be light fluffy & damp. Always make a small batch because the mix will eventually dry out. ***If bath bombs crumble to pieces you can TRY to make them again: Let bomb pieces dry completely. Sieve into powder. Add wet ingredients (& repeat the steps again). Personally, I'd just make bubble bath or a bath soak. MOLDS: Always use stainless steel molds. Shaped molds are tricky (even for an experienced bath bomb maker). Often times you'll have to adjust the recipe for shaped molds. This is why the wet ingredients are always higher in my recipes when using a shaped mold. MOLDING: Fill the mold, pack down, place loose mix on top. Repeat for other side. Smoosh them together until the 2 sides touch all the way around. Tap both sides with a spoon to release the bomb. Dry for 24 hours.

A tip for making these is to mix everything but the citric acid. Add it lastly after getting the proper consistency. Also use a mixer. Good luck.

Hi Dora, I’ve been making bath bombs on and off for about 2 years. My 4 year old grandson loves bath bombs and he expects new ones from his Gigi so I’m always looking for new cool ways to make them for his bathtime enjoyment. I love your videos. And omg! Yes never spray alcohol or witch hazel on the mix. I swear idk where that terrible idea came from lol But you’re correct it’s a definite No No. I have learned so much from you. I followed a recipe that told me to get a spray bottle of water and put it on mist. I tried it, but my bombs expanded. I was so disappointed. I followed your recipe and the bombs are the bomb! Lol! I've been making bath bombs for three years now and I keep learning about how to produce a great bath bomb every time. I've tried the poly 80 trick from you and it works, but I also kept using the alcohol because I live in zero humidity and my bath bombs kept drying out too fast...my last batch, made with poly and alcohol expanded. It has great bubbles and action, just hard, squashed, cracked too badly to fix or turn into fizzy dust. But I use them and they are fun! I'm going to (try harder) not to add the alcohol in my next batch...and thanks!!! I needed this tutorial.

For example, I live in south Africa and strong pigments are hard to find(I just found a great soapmaking website selling great quality micas, thank God) but even if the mica is $2 on Amazon, the shipping is $180... It just doesn't seem worth it. Even if you buy in bulk, shipping costs are insane lately.

This recipe is great thank you! I added 1tsp of carrier oil for that extra hold and stability I'm sure its not needed though! Question also! So you put in liquid colour.. then you added powdered colour? I have been using these liquid colours but I can't get them bright and bold they are more pastel and they don't seem to colour the water in a dramatic way. I used 10 drops of one colour, maybe not enough? Thank you!! ❤

Hey Dora! I recently found you and have become obsessed with your videos! I've struggled with Bath bombs so much, and have given up on them several times over the years and just decided not to worry with them anymore. But I always end up coming back to them. Your videos have really helped me alot and I finally have confidence that I'll be able to "get it right" this time :) Haven't used one of your recipes yet but getting ready to. One question though, how long does it take your bombs to completely dissolve. I'm wanting mine to last for at least 5 mins, and so far it's only about 3 mins. I'm using the 2.5" sphere molds. I'm currently not using cornstarch or a surfactant so I'm wondering if that could be the reason why they're dissolving too fast. Any suggestions you have are appreciated. It's difficult to find a great recipe for bath bombs . It's not a simple one and done. Keeping humidity low is super important though. I can't make bath bombs the day it rains or the day after, they will not stay formed, they just fall apart, so a dehumidifier is a wonderful purchase. Humidity should be below 50. I actually prefer about 42. Everyone's recipe is different in this regard. I also use kaolin clay and cream of tarter and coconut milk, as they make the water feel nice. Sometimes I'll substitute the milk for colloidal oatmeal. I use lakes and dyes to color my bombs although a few use mica too. I'm going to try adding a liquid surfactant rather tham 99% alcohol, like you suggest and see if this helps. I've got a ton of many different surfactants, so no problem ther, lol! Hey Lisa. There are no silly questions. I don't normally add all 3. I was demonstrating how to add colorants to a bath bomb recipe (for the sake of the video). If I do add all 3 I normally use 90% dye bc it dissolves in water, then I might add lake or neon color powder to brighten the color up a bit (10% at the absolute most bc it is not water soluble). Then you can add mica for sparkle.

Fekisha I hear you & I’m hear to tell you that ALL bath bomb makers go thru this! Mine was 3 months of this until I finally made a bath bomb that I was proud of (that worked). Don’t give up! There’s a learning curve to bath bomb making & the ONLY thing you can do is practice. You can try 109+ greatest recipes that work for every one else but the truth is that it just takes time, practice, and (above all) patience to actually develop a recipe and method that works for you, your climate, your ingredients, etc. hang in there just a little bit longer and I promise you -you will get the hang of it!

About 24 hours to get out the fragile state then it could take up to a week or longer until they fully dry to where they float

I like this simple recipe, it's perfect for trying out and then embellishing later! My only complaint about the video is that the white text is difficult to read on some of the video itself, but other than that *chef's kiss*
