I think of it just like essay writing where you gather quotes, or sample culture in music, finding that small, exact piece of the original you want to use and taking it to make something else. That iteration point hits for me too for sure - it can be kind of hard because putting stuff out, when you don't think it's perfect, feels a bit exposing sometimes - but yeah that knowledge that another one needs to be started helps the process.
