Hi Mike - as always, great info! Just an FYI - when you adjust doubled vocals, there is a tool to make pitch/timing variations for you. It's under Edit\Add Random Deviations. Then you can choose Pitch or Timing and add Subtle/Moderate/Drastic deviations. Works well if you first select all notes (Ctrl+A) then apply the random deviations to all at the same time.

Been using Melodyne Studio for some time and it is invaluable to make my vocals sound better, more on pitch, and great to help create harmonies. Your section on separating the notes was a feature I had tried to use, but with limited success. Your section pointed out what steps I was omitting! Thanks for your work here, I always look forward to your videos, please keep them coming!!

Great tutorial! I’m that guy who “didn’t read the whole manual”, but just jumped right in and learned by trial and error 😅. I occasionally use the doubling trick with my trumpet for some nice results. Typically, I’ll double it and simply make one copy just slightly off tune, but I like your “by note” method. Thanks for the tips!

manually adjusting things is way better I agree... quantizing, especially on faster/more "quantity-dense" vocals, really just doesn't ever work out how you want it to... btw if you don't want to turn off "Active" for the time grid, you can always press and hold ALT then drag the beginning of the note. Another great vid! I'm pretty average at using Melodyne so these tips are super helpful

Great refresher video for me. Been using many of these techniques myself but did not know how to use the pitch drift tool! One other thing that could have been done (to see if it helps avoid the left + right panning of the same track imaging in the center) is to lessen the vibrato a bit in the copies only. A real singer would have some kind of vibrato in notes sung that are natural to that person on certain notes, but that vibrato would never be exactly the same on all notes, so randomizing (lessening to different degrees on the copies) those squiggles in the middle pitch correction tool would be useful. To super newbies: do NOT center every note that is off pitch - that is human. I don't know if I should mention a competitor in the Y space here, but FIL does a great comparison between Kelly Clarkson and Judy Garland singing "Over The Rainbow: ... Judy's vibrato was naturally "flat ascending" and it's gorgeous. Sometimes it's best to just manually correct a few notes here and there. Great video Mike! I'm subscribed.

Great Melodyne demo! The vocal doubling tips are mostly automated in Melodyne 5’s most complete version (Studio). Just select the notes you want to affect, and in the Edit menu, look for “add random deviations” for either pitch or timing or both. You can select one of 3 severity levels for each. I use the most aggressive ones and it works really well to create a convincing vocal double. It’s a shame that there is no option to do this with formant as well, you have to do that as you demonstrated.

So I won't win anymore, it's too late... But I also have some tips for you: You can use Melodyne for any instrument, not just singing ;-) Vertical rulers - they are there but not visible. You just need to set more contrast in the settings. When editing a bass guitar, I found that in monophonic mode, Melodyne can't detect octave jumps and stays on the same pitch. But it recognizes them in polyphonic mode. I have the "Essential" version (got it with "Studio One") so I can't edit polyphonic tracks. You can see the polyphonic track in gray. But you can copy it to a MIDI instrument track and edit it there - just like MIDI.

Mike thank you for another excellent master class. I've had Melodyne since the basic version was offered with Sonar. I upgraded to pro and continue to upgrade, but really only use it to convert monophonic and melodic lines to midi. I've always hated the way my processed vocals turned rendered out. I tend to see weird phase and pitch glitches, so kind of abandoned using it. I'm sure it was a 100% user error. I would like to see more content on how you use melodyne. I'm curious why you ended up shifting the formant down on both the lead and the double in your last harmony example. All I know is that it clearly worked. Thanks again as always for the excellent content. Love your channel.

Getting rid of breaths! A heinous affront lol. Compressor dialled in just to accentuate breaths. Great demo for melodyne though.

As an audio engineer of many years, I've been using Melodyne since it's first release (2001) up to current v5 version. It is indeed incredibly powerful and has been at the heart of virtually every studio for almost as long (while Antares Auto-Tune is very capable, it's Celemony's Melodyne that's #1 in pro studios). Melodyne is also the #1 reason virtually 100% of today's 'pop' music has been tuned...to the Max. Melodyne's abuse is certainly complete with everyone under 30 today having been completely indoctrinated into accepting computer-perfect, dehumanized 'fake' music. It's also the reason virtually every 'artist' mimes at (cough) live concerts. It's also the reason so many 'new' re-releases of classic artists/albums have appeared over recent years, and that's assuming of course, the buyer is ok with/doesn't notice the extreme tuning applied...which most certainly does completely ruin/dehumanise those original fantastic singers.

I never knew what the formant tool was for. The doubling seems like a lot of work, easier to record another vocal track, or get Waves Abbby road ADT plugin. However, your Melodyne example is very useful in certain circumstances. Thanks Mike...

@michaelschnell5633Ай бұрын
Very Helpful ! Astonishing that Melodyne does not feature a "humanization" (i.e. randomize) to automate doubling. IMHO modifying the Vibrato instead of the pitch could be a good way to doubling without the danger of introducing too much phasing,

I've been looking for a simple tip, which so far has eluded me - how on earth do you adjust the overall playback volume? There doesn't seem to be a main playback volume control anywhere! Some tracks I have, playback too loudly, but I don't want to reduce their note volumes, I just want to turn the volume down for the whole thing .

I have never had much luck doubling in melodyne convincingly unless the arrangement is pretty dense, even with the built in random tools. I usually end up adding additional distortion plugins on the L/R channels. Formant changes definitely help, but phasing is always hard to avoid. One other tool in the arsenal is to add control points within longer notes to actually change the timing of the inner-note delivery. Too complicated for this tutorial, but if you desperately need to get a double…
