Glad it's helpful! Yeah, that's a really efficient way to really cut from sequence to sequence without needing to drag a clip and stay on the keyboard. I only wish you could see the whole source timeline like in Avid, but this still works very good and the jump to edit points helps a lot. Thanks so much for watching!

That bit about using full clip extents is so helpful. The first time I made subclips, I thought they would behave just like dropping them into the timeline. I made a bunch of subclips, then I put them into the timeline, and I realized my mistake when I tried adding dissolves between them. There was no extra material to dissolve into or out of. I didn't know they could be restored, so instead I went back and re-did all my selects but with a little more "padding" around the ins and outs. It worked, but your solution is better.

Another great video! I'm a big fan of "pancake" timelines and until the Speed Editor came along, used the pancake timeline technique to create my "best" selects. In the future, I plan to use the Speed Editor and Cut Page to do this first step. then, once I get my "best" selects, I will likely employ a pancake timeline in the Edit Page for further refinement.

Very cool! Yeah the best take away from this video is there are lots of ways to go about narrowing in on the best shots. A combination of editing a selects reel in the cut page and then using that as a pancake is a great way to go. I wish you could make subclips easier in the cut page. Thanks again so much for supporting the channel Keith! I hope you have a great day.

Thank you , I have been searching for a couple of years to find something like this. I never could really move to Davinci bc I was too use to FCPX bc I could blaze through my clips, hit I/O and hit F to make favorites then just build my timeline from the favorites drop down menu which is so easy and fast. I have been asking for years in the Davinci forums why there was not something like this in Davinci... I am going to try this out bc it seems it could work almost as well as FCPX for me. I will also just set up a profile with Touch portal on my iPad to mimic the hot keys like you had mapped... Thank you too much for this awesome tutorial. Can I do what you did in the beginning and then drag all those clips into a bin and use just that bin to make my timeline on the edit page and not on the cut page ? Thank you!!!

I have both DaVinci and FCPX I am surprised DaVinci can’t do this better. In FCPX just scrub footage, Mark in,mark out and hit the F key. (Favorite) Then Sort clips and look at favorites only. Sooooo much easier and faster. I know this video isn’t about that but that is where DaVinci has the most room to gain improvement is project organization. Bins, jumping pages, keyboard, speed editor ... it should be a basic function with the speed editor from any page.

I love your videos Chandwick. So clear and informative. I am thinking of getting Studio with the Speed Editor. I notice when I use my mouse it is hard to get a smooth scroll and then the play head sometimes jumps a little bit. I find that using J,K, L to search is much better. But would you say using the scroll wheel is so smooth that it makes it faster and easier to find what you are looking for when scrolling through a clip? Or do you think using the J, K, L keys works just as well? Do you think you can program keyboard short cuts to do everything the Speed Editor does just as easily?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Galyle! Great question. J,K,L is really great - there's a lot of control there that most folks don't even know about so I'm glad you've found the same to be true. I don't recall anything that is on the speed editor that can't be done with a keyboard setup properly with the exception of the specific search dial type functions. Watch this video that runs down all of them, some are gimiky but others are really useful like changing clip volume. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2WZhIGXaNaHpsU I personally can't say yes I'm faster using the search dial then JKL, but I can tell you it is fun to use. I'd say its a draw. I have been using JKL for about 20 years so learning the dial has really just been a lot of fun is how I'd describe it. The button layout on the speed editor is probably 80% of how I would like it so that is nice. I'd say if you're on the fence about it to get it because you might not be able to get resolve with it for too much longer (I have no insider info though). I bought my first resolve license with it was $1,000 just by itself for the noise reduction. So this for $300 and the tool is really great.

Hey Chadwick, Thank you so much for all of your tutorials! I was wondering if you might have some input on an issue I've come across since I started using this method on a new project. All of my subclip thumnails are changed when I scrub over them and if I make multiple subclips from the same clip they often have the same thumbnail which makes it impossible to find the selects I wanted in the first place. I don't have a speed editor. Is there a way to turn off the thumbnail scrubbing? I selected "use full clip extents" when creating all of these subclips. Would turning that off help> Is there any way to batch turn that off? Going through and selecting a poster clip for hundreds of sublips is way to time consuming and rarely even works. Thanks for your help! -Robert

I'm new to DR and video editing. I just got my Speed Editor and ran into the same problem. I'm not sure why, but the wheel doesn't work in the edit page for me until I add something to the timeline. I added one of my whole clips to the timeline and after that, the wheel worked for searching through clips. I set my in and out points using the speed editor and then used option-b to create the subclips. Added clips show up in the smart bin, so it appears to be working. I'm too new to know if this is a beta issue or a feature. :)

@@LJandLJ Hi Larry! Thanks for commenting and congrats on getting your speed editor in! The wheel won't move on the timeline until there is footage on it. @LJandLJ
@LJandLJ 3 жыл бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips It makes sense that you can't use the wheel to search through the timeline until you have something in the timeline. But should the wheel work to search through the viewer version of a clip that has been selected from the bin? Searching with the wheel there would not work for me until there was something in the timeline (edit page). After that, any clip that I double-clicked on in the bin would appear in the viewer and I could scrub through it. It behaves differently on the cut page, where the timeline can be empty and the wheel works to search through a selected clip. I may just be missing something. Thanks.

Love your videos! Do sub clips retain a connection to the original? If I change audio or color correction in the original, does it carry through to the sub clip? Edit: Sub clips ested and at least not in a way I expect. Years ago, I did a video shoot with a multicam type synced music video with another director. We synced up all the shots with a temp mix in a compound clip or timeline and they went to work editing. The song was one piece, but interview stuff got moved around. I was able to remix the multitrack audio off line and replace the original audio with a final mix that was the exact same length in the compound clip. All of the audio improvements reflected through to every timeline. I think we used a timeline where it acted like a source. Perhaps this is nesting, not sure. Any ideas if Resolve does this. I greatly prefer the daVinci flow. Many thanks!

Hey KZ - For this I would wait until a project is done, but you can go select your favorite timelines - file - media management - timelines (choose to copy or transcode) used media (and maybe add 1 second of handles). I'll put this on the list to make a video on it - but hopefully this will get you started. It will make new files with the media you used (you still would have to delete your originals).

Has there been any update to this date yet for an improvement? I'm migrating from FCPX. I really miss "Favourites" and the ability to work with them easily in the timeline. By simply selecting a range in a clip and hitting "F"...voila, we now have edit-able "subclips" that appear in an organized fashion for easy timeline dropping in organized Event Folders, or etc. However, In DaVinci...there seems to be so many extra steps, even including a completely non-intuitive "Extend" submenu that we have to enable to edit SubClips in the timeline; say if we need to make transitions between clips or etc. I really want to migrate over but the sheer nature of how clips are organized and handled like this seems daunting. It's too much like Premiere in that sense. Maybe there's been an update, or is this still the easiest (& most similar to FCPX in that regard) way to handle "Favourites" or should I say, "SubClips" ??? Thanks for your help.

I want to use the lower timeline as sort of a source folder for individual clips that I will add to the upper timeline, but having the preview switch back and forth constantly is annoying and makes me stop to double check my timing.
