Grant is *REALLY* upping the game with Resolve! Though I do think that Avid's track patching scheme is a little bit more intuitive, but otherwise, you can *really* tell that they have *real editors* on staff and actually understand the editing process! Kudos!!

Yeah its sure getting all the little holes filled in that was missing. I agree - I like the simpler - big V1 - A1 in Avid more too, but the track selector actually does quite a bit of stuff, it's not just like sync locks. Thanks for watching!

Finally they seem to have a closer look at the details that make AVID a very fast and effective experience when it comes to basic cutting. These things aren't obvious if you are casually editing but very important in more complex projects that also have time constraints. Still some ground to cover for Resolve in this area but definately a step in the right direction.

@@CreativeVideoTips To name a few things: In AVID I used to do a lot of advanced trimming. Although, in theory, you could probably do basically the same thing in Resolve, advanced trimming feels clunky and slow to "set up". I don't know... I have just adapted to a different style of cutting in Resolve but sometimes I do miss the "magic" of advanced trimming. Not really fond of the track patching system in general in Resolve. Can't really put my finger on why, I just think AVID has a more simple and direct approach. Maybe in part a UI thing? Probably a too "fundamental" area in a NLE to be revamped from the ground up though, but just this new ability of "swipeing" track selectors in Resolve is going to be a blessing. I think the "out of sync" indicator and the dupe detection in the timeline in Resolve behaves kind of mysteriously. Feel it's more stable and consistent in AVID. That being said, I really like Resolve. In many areas it totally crushes AVID as a stand alone app.

The ability to use the source monitor to insert sequences, timelines, or multicam clips, just like in AVID, is a fantastic feature for editing fiction. This could mark the beginning of DaVinci as a go-to tool for series editing. Additionally, a single-click audio routing function, similar to AVID’s, is one of AVID’s biggest advantages. If DaVinci continues to adopt more of AVID’s capabilities, it could secure a strong place in the fiction editing industry.

Thanks for this great overview of the updates! I moved away from Media Composer about 18 years ago, but I still miss its core timeline methodology. I moved from MC to FCP to Premiere to FCPX back to PP and finally to Resolve, but my fingers still can't fly across the keyboard as fast as they did on Avid. These last couple of updates from BMD are starting to change that. There are so many talented people teaching Resolve on KZbin, but your videos always appeal the most to my "inner editor." Cheers!

Hey Chadwick, thanks for your videos which are always informative. Something you didn’t touch on here, but I think is a game changer for those of us coming from Avid or Premiere for unscripted or scripted content: being able to set up a multicam and "use source audio files" to retain source audio format (ie poly wav files from a mixer), and then decompose that audio when cutting it into an edit timeline while retaining multicam video. This essentially allows us to work with multi cams much in the same way we do in Premiere or Avid, from the composer window to the edit timeline.

Interesting to see other people's editing workflow and them wishing for things that i never ever used in almost 20 years of editing. In&out points in timeline for example.. only used them to loop or export and always wondered why it behaved so strange when copying something for example and i forgot the get rid of in&out. Speaking of looping a segment.. what's the reason for having to click on the loop icon AND having to press a dedicated shortcut to play the loop? Seems like one or the other should be sufficient, no?

Great video. You are my first stop for new features as you are a power user and point out the important features! The ability to deselect “Automatically create audio tracks” is soooooooo long overdue. Question though, in your last example you were able to repatch 1 source track. What I can’t figure out is what if I want to select and patch 2 source audio tracks. There is only 1 track available in the destination sequence. In my experience, the destination sequence does not adjust what tracks are available based on the source audio.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 10 күн бұрын
Thanks Ken - Yeah I maybe should have expanded that explanation - but it does work. Lets say you want 3 of the 4 tracks to the timeline. Just make sure you pre-make 3 audio tracks on the timeline. When you load the source up, you can right click on the numbers in the track header to make assingments for the destination. If the track is already patched (A2 to A2, you don't see the option to change it because its already patched).

Got it. Thanks… one more question. If I have a synced clip (dual system sound) on my timeline and let’s say it has 6 lavs and I match frame that clip, when it goes into the source window it does not bring in all of the synced sound so I have to then find in media pool, put it into the source and then I have access to the full sync sound. Do you have a solution for that? I’ve been stumped on that for years!! Thanks again.

Hey Chad! Congratulations on your content; you’ve helped me a lot recently. I have an audio question related to switching audio channels. I usually record with a boom mic on a recorder and capture two characters’ audio with the DJI mics (recording each character’s audio separately within the mics). It’s for a scene, basically... I use Syncalia to sync everything, and then I make a compound clip to edit more easily without dealing with multiple tracks. Is there an easier way to do this using channels? I’ve been searching everywhere for years and haven’t found a tutorial on this. Thanks so much!
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 9 күн бұрын
Hey thanks, also syncaila is a gem - great software. The compound clips works, you could also right click and link the separate audio clips together, but only on a timeline. Before a final mix pass you will want to decompose the compound clips.
@magnefilms

@@CreativeVideoTips Yes, that’s usually my process: sync first, then create compound clips, followed by color and audio work. Editing multiple takes and cuts with so many audio tracks can be overwhelming. I’m still trying to figure out how to embed audio directly into the clip in DaVinci Resolve, with each microphone as its own channel rather than a separate track. Thanks for the response-I’m following all your content closely.

Thanks for the great video! Why is using swap timeline better than using stacked timelines? Is it just you have more screen real estate for all the layers or am I missing something else that makes the workflow better? It would seem that having both timelines on screen at the same time would be more convenient. That is how I usually take shots from my selects timelines to my main timeline.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 10 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching - I prefer it for screen space, like you mentioned, but also find it more responsive then tabbing between timelines - if I tab fast it can lock up sometimes on bigger timelines. If you are doing the top/bottom stacked pancake style that works too, but I never have enough space to see on any display - maybe my eyes are getting bad.

When I first started using Davinci Resolve years ago, my laptop at the time could not handle the software. The video playback would stick and stutter so badly and I tried all the render cache options. When I finally upgraded to a new, more powerful laptop (being able to use DR was high on my priority list) the video playback ran like breeze. It did not take long to love this software. After a few updates to v18 unfortunately the sticking and stuttering started again. Thankfully I keep updating when new versions come out and I do not know what they have done in v19, but the playback is smoooooth again. The footage even seems to load faster and best part is render cache is on "None".

@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 10 күн бұрын
Ah yes, I'll be curious if that has changed. My AAF workflow to send Audio out to Protools is just to embed the audio into the file with handles. Is this what you are referring to?
@avdpost
@avdpost 10 күн бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips It's just the metadata passthrough that somethings get fuzzy. Like rendering to mxf strips it all away but mov/lcm doesn't. Right now I still can't get polywavs to expand and transfer to protools without revealing them all in the timeline first. While the manual says that polywav channels should travel along to protools even if only connected via metadata. I'd love to figure out a way to be able to link directly to the source location audio so a protools editor can access all the discrete channels without needing a third party tool like ediload (still exploring this workflow too). So it's nice to see I can manually dictate the video / audio metadata exchange to avoid over writing during a manual sync. Which I occasionally have to do when fixes tiny timecode sync errors or slipping on dailies.
@lamlo
@lamlo 10 күн бұрын
@@avdpost When I tested this before on a previous version of Resolve, the Export to Pro Tools preset renders out new audio files and rewrites the file names and strips out all the metadata except for the timecode (no matter if you select embedded or linked). This made it a little more complicated to link back to the original location audio files. I then tried exporting an AAF from the timeline instead, but found out that some metadata gets ruffled up when syncing picture to the location audio files, causing the AAF to not link back up to the original location audio files (Ediload has been great btw. I wanted to test out Kraken too, but I'm on a PC). My workaround was instead of syncing, I would make a sync map and make compound clips for each shot, edit the timeline, and then decompose all the shots before sending an AAF. It seemed to work the best, but isn't very practical. I plan on doing more tests on v19, and I've heard someone saying that exporting an AAF from the Media composer preset works better.
@avdpost
@avdpost 9 күн бұрын
@@lamlo in v18.5 I was able to pass some metadata through, but admittedly I’m so new to protools it was hard to know what came across besides what I could read in the timeline. But I was able to send track titles like Boom, Lav, talent mic names. The only way this worked was if I used the QuickTime Renderer and exported .wav files (lcm). Handles worked fine as well but the only hang up for me was a polywav workflow like ediload might allow. I was able to use the standard linking system in Resolve and send to ProTools using the protools preset as standard AAF didn’t translate subframe editing changes or retiming nor automation correctly. But it still doesn’t allow for linking to the original media, so still need to explore ediload further.
@lamlo
@lamlo 9 күн бұрын
@@avdpost Interesting, thanks for the info! I’m going to have to do some more testing when I get the chance. Also, look into using Pro Tool’s workspace window to view more metadata. For this, I usually just use Sound Devices’ old but still reliable Wave Agent software to identify and manipulate the important metadata (it’s free too). I think Soundly will allow you to see it all too (also free if you don’t go for their subscription). As for Ediload, I do highly recommend exploring it further. Even if you have perfect metadata in the AAFs, assembling the location wav files with Ediload is so much easier than using Pro Tool’s built in Field recorder guide track function.

It is annyoing that I cant just select the track I want to paste something to with one click, but have to deselect all others I dont want. This is super counter intuitive 😢 is there a way to change it in settings?

They destroyed the copy and paste behavior. Now you can't copy the end of clips to an out point anymore. Instead it always goes to the playhead, which is a huge step backwards! Regarding the fixed track targeting: I made so many posts on the forum and DM'ed so many developers over the years. Can't believe they finally fixed that.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 10 күн бұрын
Yeah - I'm sure all the feedback about track targeting helped encourage this change. It's super welcomed by every resolve editor I know. Copy/Paste, is tricky - it does change the established hierarchy - but I also see many confused young editors when they don't realize they had an in mark on the timeline.

I just tried it out a bit, do you know if there's a "restore track destination" type command? I think it unfortunately doesn't exist. There's moving them up / down, toggling them but... if you've really scrambling them up in track patching it REALLY blows to not have a restore to default desinations type command. In avid I use restore track patch default 100s of times a day. I'm sure they'll add it but, that's a miss. I'd love to be wrong though! I got to do a trim pass on a pilot in resolve coming up and I already upgraded to 19.1 to to advantage of these new features.

I've had issues with the latest update. When I was editing the video it kept crashing when a skipped to a point in the video. Eventually I figured how to navigate around that issue. Also, when I went to create the video, I went through the same steps that I did previously in other versions but it wouldn't render the video. Are there someway to fix these issues?
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 4 күн бұрын
This is a tough one - I have heard there are some issues with 19.1. A lot of times renders break because of a plugin missing, or a corrupt frame, or maybe a variable frame rate footage. If you're able to, roll back to 19.0.3 and repot this to blackmagic on thier website with the crash log.

Hi there, am using latest Davinci Resolve on Macbook M3 Pro 16”. I am facing a performance issue on my playback when using some effects like Whip in/out, Zoom in/o out. Also adding Motion blur becomes a reason for a huge performance drop. I was expecting that a Macbook this expensive wouldn’t face this issues. I use proxys, set my resolution to 1/4 but it doesn’t help! The whole projects starts to lag, the playback is at 2fps and i can not work properly. The whole timeline becomes red every time i adjust one of the clips. I tried all of your tips but nothing really helped me. I would be very happy if you could help me with this problem!
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 10 күн бұрын
Hi - no matter how much money or power you put at a computer, it will always ask for more. The biggest things are to set the timeline resolution to 1080p with 1080p or smaller ProRes/DnX proxy files. But yes - motion blur is very hard to calculate and takes time. Jake Wipp has a plugin set that optimizes this for zoom that works very good. Mr. Alexs zoom are also great, but I don't use those with motion blur. But yeah - even on "max" computers I edit 1080, then change res to 4k before output.

Whatever minor options they implement, for me the biggest expectation would be the Delivery. With all features and effects (esp. Super Scale aka Upscale with all that noise reduction and sharpening). I know, lots depend on the hardware, but software has it's say too. And, of course, PLAYBACK. Maybe Playback even goes first for me.

All the updates are not useful to me. How about fixing the timeline footage order issue? Every time I drag footage from the desktop, the order of the clips reverses, forcing me to delete all the clips in the timeline and re-import them from the media pool to get everything in the correct order. Regarding sensitivity control for lift*, *gamma*, *gain*, and *master adjustments when using a mouse: achieving precise adjustments without a dedicated panel can be difficult. A firmware update that allows users to set the sensitivity of these controls when using a mouse would greatly benefit many users. But it seems they're leaning toward encouraging panel purchases instead. The people at Blackmagic are incredibly frustrating to deal with and seem to be quite stubborn.

PLEASE! I need help! I just watched an older video of yours about doing a clean install of DaVinci as a possible bug fix. I followed your instructions perfectly and was able to successfully do a clean install but it didn't fix my issue. I tried calling BlackMagic tech support and they directed me to an online forum. But I was still unable to fix my issue. I'm having media offline issues but the files haven't been moved. I've relinked all the clips and even did the clean install. The codec I'm using is h.264 4:2:2. When I go the deliver tab certain thumbnails show media offline but when I playback the timeline in the edit tab all the clips are there. I unchecked the stop renders tab when a frame or clip cannot be processed just to see what the render would look like. And it's not a whole clip that shows up missing its parts of the clip. So I see flashes of the red screen of death throughout the export. I'm working on an M1 iMac connected to a Samsung T7 through the Thunderbolt 4 port. I've tried all the KZbin fixes. When I check the stop renders tab I get partially complete and I get render failed error decoding full resolution media and proxy. I give up! If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it!

Oof, that sounds terrible Shawn. I'm sorry. Do you by chance have phone footage on the timeline? If so, it likely variable frame rate and the problem. I had this on a job last week. I ran it through an app called shutter encoder to force a fixed frame rate and then it was fine. If that's not the case, I would try to divide and conquer the timeline to narrow it down to a specific clip? I/O half the timeline, half of that etc...

@@CreativeVideoTips First of all thank you for the quick response. And yes it has been a nightmare. This has happened on two projects so far and I can't waste anymore time troubleshooting this. But no all the footage was shot on my Sony A7iv in S-log 3 at 60 fps. I've been using DaVinci for over a year with the same setup and never had an issue. I want to say I noticed it first when I updated to version 19 maybe? This issue is on multiple clips. I created a new timeline and decomposed in place and it fixed a lot of the clips. So I don't think it's an issue with the actual clip since I was able to fix quite a few with this method. But I'm desperate I've got multiple projects that need to done before the new year. So any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

@@CreativeVideoTips Here in Italy I find that a lot of people still work with omf, especially when dealing with television delivery. I think this is why people are resilient to make the full switch to resolve from traditional systems outside the color page: sometimes you simply have to dialog with other professionals (like a sound mixer) and resolve happens to fall short with this little things. I personally would throw away any other editing program and stick with an all in one system like resolve but when I have to collaborate with others I find myself opening Premiere just to create an OMF and I really wish that process was easier.
@CreativeVideoTips
@CreativeVideoTips 9 күн бұрын
@@rafpar57 gotcha - I should make a tutorial on this - but basically I do the same to send to ProTools mixers, but use AAF instead of OMF. It's functions the same, stores the audio inside the single file, but is not limited to 4GB like the old OMF format. All ProTools systems have in the last 10 years will take AAF.
@rafpar57
@rafpar57 9 күн бұрын
@@CreativeVideoTips Yeah I prefer working with AAF too but I find myself at times working with dudes that worked on TV already in the 80s and they run the same systems they used to work with like in the early 2000s (sometimes even in the same computers!! 🤦‍♂) and there is no time for me to explain how to import AAF and bla bla. If they want a OMF they will eventually get an OMF. But if we see resolve as a program for the future, I can see why they want to overtake the old OMF and stick with the AAF, way more efficient.

I think we just have to patient, but I also don’t understand why they neglect keyframing so much. Almost every keyframe interface (curve editor in the edit page, keyframe editor in fusion, keyframes in the color page, no keyframing for audio fx in the edit page) feels clunky and outdated or just inefficient, except fusions spline. Keyframing is one of the most essential principles of editing and should be easy to use and provide the necessary control imo. Maybe they are just scared of touching the old code in case it breaks other stuff idk.

They've limited the API on the free version, which basically makes scripts like Reactor, Snap captions unavailable in the Free version. Now i do get the reason to put more features in the paid version and less in the free to make the paid version worth the money but taking away something that was already there is such a scummy move, i never thought i'd see this from BMD.
