Just about the best black and white cinematography I've ever seen. The images are super sharp, the lighting is immaculate, and the rich black and white tones go all the way from pure white to jet black with all the tonal gradations in between. This is top notch work.

Wonderful movie! I could not understand why Mr Sardonicus' voice was so soothing and familiar until I looked him up and realized that he was Gabriel in the fantastically cheesy 80's gem, "DOLLS"! Love the skull house design at 13:56. William Castle's best film by far (IMO), with a very literate script and almost-uniformly fine acting. I think that the horrifying graveyard/exhumation scene was "farmed out"...that is, the shot of Sardonicus' father's shocking corpse was done by another studio..probably in Mexico, where they did this sort of gruesome stuff VERY convincingly. Even the mold markings on the coffin lid are different from the previous shots as the lid is being opened (by ITSELF, as it appears!). My guess, but the corpse is just too fantastically designed and detailed to have been part of this cheapie production; the later shots of the corpse-head (In the dark room) are MUCH more like what the Columbia effects department would have designed and built, looking really cheezy in comparison to the graveyard scene. I first saw this film at age 20, and it still scared the crap out of me.

Most of Castle's flicks had gimmicks like the Punishment Poll, e.g. "House on Haunted Hill", which had a plastic skeleton on a string running up the aisle, the seat buzzers for "The Tingler", the Ghost Viewer for "13 Ghosts", etc. Cheesy fun all the way 'round.
