Join Vincent and Tangella as they watch “The Lawnmower Man” from 1992 with Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey.
"The Lawnmower Man" is a riveting 1992 science fiction horror film that delves into the unforeseen consequences of human experimentation. The story unfolds around Jobe Smith, a simple-minded gardener, who becomes the subject of Dr. Lawrence Angelo's groundbreaking research. Dr. Angelo, working for Virtual Space Industries, aims to enhance human intelligence using virtual reality and psychoactive drugs. However, the experiment takes a sinister turn when Jobe acquires not only superior intelligence but also psychokinetic and telepathic powers. This newfound power triggers a transformation in Jobe, leading him down a path of aggression and a quest to evolve into a digital entity. As Jobe's abilities grow, so does the danger he poses, culminating in a suspenseful climax where Dr. Angelo must confront the consequences of his creation. This film explores the ethical boundaries of scientific exploration and the volatile intersection of human consciousness and technology.
Cast:
Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Lawrence Angelo
Jeff Fahey as Jobe Smith
Jenny Wright as Marnie Burke
Geoffrey Lewis as Terry McKeen
Jeremy Slate as Father Francis McKeen
Dean Norris as The Director
Austin O'Brien as Peter Parkette

Back when this movie came out, virtual reality was the new heralded, technology that was set to take over. I heard some lofty claims that it would end human suffering as it held unlimited potentials. I think I had the best sleep all week, so it was worth the tradeoff. Remember that Creature Features is in San Francisco, CA, USA so that is PST, either 9pm or 10pm. I must admit, this was a good movie when I saw it back in the '90's. Yes, it's a B-grade movie, but it does touch on the fact of how far do we want to go with technology before the technology overtakes the humans. AI, VR, all reality now, just a concept then.

did you also know that for this film The eight minutes of computer generated effects took seven people eight months to complete on a budget of $500,000. It was discovered through FBI tapes that this was former Waco cult leader David Koresh's favourite movie. Several of the symbols Jobe (Jeff Fahey) sees flying at him during his first VR treatment are demon evocation seals taken from the infamous Key of Solomon. Also When Dr. Angelo stimulates Jobe's brain using virtual reality, the symbols that fly at Jobe, at close inspection, are Kabbalistic mystical symbols with ancient Hebrew writing around them.Dr. Angelo's line "I've decided to take my work back underground" was used as a sample in the intro track for the Music For The Jilted Generation album by The Prodigy.

I love how every character in this movie is a classic cardboard trope. The scientist obsessed with the next evolution in technology but is blind to its military applications, and, his polar opposite, the army man who doesn't give one tin crap about anything that can't immediately be used as a new weapon; the sex-crazed nympho; and if course, the lovable idiot who becomes a genius and now only wants to take over the world. I'd say it'd make a great drinking game except you'd have alcohol poisoning 20 minutes in.
